W05-01 - Rationale and Design of an RCT Comparing “EMC-Strategy” with TAU in Patients with Major Depression - the EMC Trial
2010
IntroductionFor Major Depression, current guidelines recommend treatment durations of 3-8 weeks until optimisation in case of insufficient outcome. Many retrospective studies indicate that improvement (HAMD-17 decrease ≥20%) occurs usually within 10-14 days and that non-improvement after 14 days of treatment is highly predictive for poor clinical outcome.MethodsIn level 1 of the EMC trial, non-improvers after 14 days of antidepressant treatment will be randomised to “early medication change” (EMC) strategy or treatment according to current guidelines (TAU). EMC schedules treatment optimisations on day 15 and day 29 in case of non-improvement. TAU schedules a medication change after 28 days …
Seidlmayer’s purpura: five cases and review of the litterature
2014
About 100 cases of AHEI have been published in medical literature worldwide. Although initially considered a variant of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), it is now considered a separate entity: in fact it shows infrequently visceral involvement and IgA skin depositions. Furthermore these patients show a better prognosis than HSP patients. Onset age for AHEI usually ranges between 4 and 24 months but it spreads from birth to 60 months. AHEI, also defined Seidlmayer’s purpura (SP), is characterized by the triad: fever, oedema and purpura. The latter is usually rosette-, annular- or targeted-shaped primarily over the face, ears and extremities in a nontoxic infant. The development and the rapidi…
EPA-0666 – Long-term maintenance of efficacy of extended-release guanfacine hydrochloride (GXR) in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hy…
2014
Introduction GXR, a selective α2A-adrenergic agonist, is a non-stimulant ADHD treatment approved in the USA for children and adolescents, and in Canada for children. Objectives To evaluate long-term maintenance of efficacy of GXR in children and adolescents with ADHD who respond to an initial open-label, short-term trial. Aims To determine if there is a higher rate of treatment failure for placebo vs GXR during the double-blind randomised-withdrawal phase (RWP) (NCT01081145). Methods Patients (6–17 years) meeting DSM-IV-TR criteria for ADHD, baseline ADHD Rating Scale-IV (ADHD-RS-IV) ≥32 and Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGI-S) ratings ≥4 were enrolled. Following 7-week dose optimiz…
Suizidale und parasuizidale Intoxikationen mit Paracetamol
2003
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Paracetamol is frequently used in deliberate self-poisoning resulting in a major risk for the patients due to its dose-dependent hepatotoxicity. In the present study the cases of intoxications consulting our Poison Center should be analysed illustrating recent results and trends. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 38 065 patients (25 098 female, 12447 male, 520 sex unknown, average age 36.8 years) registered during the study period from 1.1.1995 until 31.5.2002 4021 with paracetamol intoxication were analysed with respect to the ingested dose, concomitant substances, the degree of observed symptoms and the length of hospital stay. RESULTS: The use of paracetamol in deliber…
Gruppentherapeutische Frühintervention für Patienten im Frühstadium der Alzheimererkrankung und deren Angehörige - Eine Pilotstudie
2008
Subject Pilot study on an early-interventional group therapy for patients with incipient Alzheimer disease and their relatives. The present study investigates whether scientific progress in terms of earlier time of diagnostic certainty can be used for psychoeducation, maintenance of positive activities and prevention of comorbid depressive episodes. Methods 12 patients (66.8 +/- 5.8 years, MMSE 24.0 +/- 4.0) together with 12 relatives have been treated with a bi-weekly group therapy program. Results For the patients treatment resulted in reduced anxiety, anergia and withdrawal, for their relatives reduced sleep disturbances, irascibility, and aggressiveness have been found. Only one of the …

2015
Background This study aimed to determine knowledge, attitude and practice of airborne and droplet isolation precautions among Dental Health Professionals (DHPs) (dental students, interns, practitioners and auxiliaries) during the outbreak of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), corona virus infection in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. Material and Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 406 dental health professionals (DHPs) working in selected dental facilities in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia during the outbreak of MERS (April-June 2013). Minority status and perceived health: a comparative study of Finnish- and Swedish-speaking schoolchildren in Finland
2000
Results of earlier studies suggest that the health of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland is better than that of the sociodemographically similar Finnish-speaking population. The causes of differences are unknown. The main aim of the study referred was to investigate whether differences in perceived health according to linguistic group were present in a nation-wide representative sample (n=5,230) of schoolchildren aged 11, 13 and 15 years. A further aim was to determine whether differences could be attributed to socioeconomic background, social relationships or health behaviour. The study is part of the international Health Behaviour in School-aged children (HBSC) survey. The perceive…
931 Intestinal Parasites in Internationally Adopted Children in Belgium
2012
Background and Aims 314 internationally adopted children were seen between 01/01/2008 and 31/03/2012 at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (Belgium). We describe the prevalence of pathogenic intestinal parasites in this population. Methods Retrospective analysis of patient records. Feces samples were obtained in 307/314 children. In addition, serology for Strongyloides and Schistosoma was performed. Results Pathogenic parasites were found in 55.7% (53% in children 0–5 years, 72.1% > 5years). When counting any parasites, 65.9% of children were found positive (61.4% for 0–5 years, 93% for >5 years). 37.5% of children with positive samples had ≥ 3 parasites. Analysis by age in child…
Parental informed consent in pediatric cancer trials: A population-based survey in Germany
2012
In Germany, nearly every child afflicted by a malignant dis-ease or a central nervous system tumor is enrolled in a clinicaltrial during treatment. Many of these children are under the age of5 years when they are first diagnosed [1]. The decision whether ornot to participate in a clinical trial is normally made by theparents on behalf of their child. Therefore, ensuring adequatelyinformed parental consent is essential to ethical practice in pedi-atric oncology. However, many empirical studies have revealed difficultieswith the informed consent process when parents are faced withthe decision to enroll their child in a clinical trial. Previous studyfindings have indicated that recalling signing th…
