Network measures in animal social network analysis : Their strengths, limits, interpretations and uses

2020

International audience; We provide an overview of the most commonly used social network measures in animal research for static networks or time‐aggregated networks. For each of these measures, we provide clear explanations as to what they measure, we describe their respective variants, we underline the necessity to consider these variants according to the research question addressed, and we indicate considerations that have not been taken so far. We provide a guideline indicating how to use them depending on the data collection protocol, the social system studied and the research question addressed. Finally, we inform about the existent gaps and remaining challenges in the use of several va…

Watch This! The Influence of Recommender Systems and Social Factors on the Content Choices of Streaming Video on Demand Consumers

2021

Streaming Video-on-demand (SVOD) services are getting increasingly popular. Current research, however, lacks knowledge about consumers’ content decision processes and their respective influencing factors. Thus, the work reported on in this paper explores socio-technical interrelations of factors impacting content choices in SVOD, examining the social factors WOM, eWOM and peer mediation, as well as the technological influence of recommender systems. A research model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Technology Acceptance Model was created and tested by an n = 186 study sample. Results show that the quality of a recommender system and not the social mapping functionality is the …

DSMAV: An improved solution for multi-attribute search based on load capacities

2016

DHT (Distributed Hash Table) such as CHORD or PARTRY facilitates information searching in scalable systems. Two popular DHT-based approaches for range or multi-attribute search are to rely on attribute-value tree and a combination of attributes and values. However, tradeoff between a load balancing mechanism and query efficiency is a challenging task for such information searching systems. In this paper, we propose improved algorithms for a system called DSMAV in which information resources are distributed fairly among nodes and found based on multi-attribute queries in a small number of hop counts. Our system creates identifiers from resource names, each of which is a combination of attrib…

Security Enhancement of Peer-to-Peer Session Initiation

2012

Today, Peer-to-Peer SIP based communication systems have attracted much attention from both the academia and industry. The decentralized nature of P2P might provide the distributed peer-to-peer communication system without help of the traditional SIP server. However, the decentralization features come to the cost of the reduced manageability and create new concerns. Until now, the main focus of research was on the availability of the network and systems, while few attempts are put on protecting privacy. In this chapter, we investigate on P2PSIP security issues and introduce two enhancement solutions: central based security and distributed trust security, both of which have their own advanta…

P2PStudio - Monitoring, Controlling and Visualization Tool for Peer-to-Peer Networks Research

2006

Peer-to-Peer Studio has been developed as a monitoring, controlling and visualization tool for peer-to-peer networks. It uses a centralized architecture to gather events from a peer-to-peer network and can be used to visualize network topology and to send different commands to individual peer-to-peer nodes. The tool has been used with Chedar Peer-to-Peer network to study the behavior of different peer-to-peer resource discovery and topology management algorithms and for visualizing the results of NeuroSearch resource discovery algorithm produced by the Peer-to-Peer Realm network simulator. This paper presents the features, the architecture and the protocols of Peer-to-Peer Studio and the ex…

Real Models are Really on M0 - Or How to Make Programmers Use Modeling

2020

This paper discusses the term ’model’ and the role of the level M0 in the four-layer metamodeling architecture of MOF/OMG. It illustrates the failures of the OMG MOF standard and how a model is an abstraction, not a description. We apply two simple approaches: (1) observing the use of models (of real or planned systems) in system development, including prototyping, simulations, and models in general, and (2) comparing modeling with programming. These approaches lead to the conclusion that models should be placed on M0, while UML models are model descriptions. This conclusion leads to a better understanding of InstanceSpecification for description of snapshots, and of metamodeling applied to…

Review on Modeling and Control of Flexible Link Manipulators

2020

This paper presents a review of dynamic modeling techniques and various control schemes to control flexible link manipulators (FLMs) that were studied in recent literature. The advantages and complexities associated with the FLMs are discussed briefly. A survey of the reported studies is carried out based on the method used for modeling link flexibility and obtaining equations of motion of the FLMs. The control techniques are reviewed by classifying them into two main categories: model-based and model-free control schemes. The merits and limitations of different modeling and control methods are highlighted.

Reputation or peer review? The role of outliers

2018

We present an agent-based model of paper publication and consumption that allows to study the effect of two different evaluation mechanisms, peer review and reputation, on the quality of the manuscripts accessed by a scientific community. The model was empirically calibrated on two data sets, mono- and multi-disciplinary. Our results point out that disciplinary settings differ in the rapidity with which they deal with extreme events—papers that have an extremely high quality, that we call outliers. In the mono-disciplinary case, reputation is better than traditional peer review to optimize the quality of papers read by researchers. In the multi-disciplinary case, if the quality landscape is…

Peer to Peer Equation Augmentation for an Altitude Aided GNSS Receiver

2010

This paper considers the possibility to integrate external altitude measurements with a Kalman based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver in a peer to peer scenario. The performance of such a system is investigated for different characteristics of the aiding measurement and for different degree of trust of the receiver upon the aiding measurement. The aiding measurement is obtained starting from the altitude measurements that the other peers in the network send to the aided user. The experiments highlight the need for a parameter that points out the effectiveness and the consistency of the computed aiding measurement. To this purpose, a reliability index is proposed, on the ba…

A Brief History of the Peer-Group Mentoring Model in Finland: Struggling for Space in a Contested Niche

2020

The aim of this article is to introduce and reflect on the development of mentoring in Finland as implemented in the form of the Peer-Group Mentoring (PGM) model. Firstly, the main characteristics and principles of the PGM model are introduced, after which experiences from implementing the model are analysed based on a literature review. We examine the following research questions: (1) How have the mentoring practices of newly qualified teachers developed towards the PGM model within the educational ecosystem in Finland? (2) How has the PGM model found its relational space (‘ecological niche’) in this ecosystem? and (3) How has PGM been experienced by mentors and mentees in terms of profess…
