Paediatric solid oral dosage forms for combination products: Improving in vitro swallowability of minitablets using binary mixtures with pellets

2023

There is a growing interest in determining and improving the acceptability of solid oral dosage forms (SODF) in paediatric populations. Combination products can be an interesting solution to combine two active pharmaceutical ingredients. This study shows that binary mixture of paediatric SODF could enhance formulation swallowability and palatability. Using the Paediatric Soft Robotic Tongue (PSRT) – an in vitro device inspired by the anatomy and physiology of 2-year-old children – we investigated the oral phase of swallowing of multi-particulate formulations, i.e., pellets (350 and 700 µm particles), minitablets (MTs, 1.8 mm), and their binary mixtures (BM), by measuring the oral swallowing…

Bioagronomic and energy potential of Carthamus tinctorius L. in the Mediterranean area

2011

In recent years, interest in dedicated energy crops, in particular oilseed crops, in the Mediterranean area has risen. This is due both to an increase in energy demand in various sectors and the need to meet the objectives set by the European Union. The agro-energy sector may become an important economic opportunity for farms, especially when considering the use of the whole plant – the oil-rich seeds and the lignocellulosic crop residues. However, in economic terms, further study is needed in the management, quantification and subsequent use of crop residues. This research looks at the productive and energy potential of the seed and crop residues of safflower with the aim of introducing th…

Bio-Agronomic Evaluation of Brassica Carina A. Braun in a Semi-Arid Area of Sicily

2011

The need to reduce fossil fuel consumption for environmental and economic reasons is placing the farming sector in a whole new light with a new set of tasks to face. Concerns arising from climate change and decisions resulting from the Kyòto Protocol have helped reinforce the idea that multifunctional farms can make a real contribution to achieving the targets set for 2012. As a producer of dedicated energy crops – crops used to supply biomass for energy – the farm becomes a supplier of raw materials for fuel production or of energy directly. For economic, social and environmental reasons, agro-energy may be the way forward to encourage multi-functionalism in farming and, therefore, increas…

Evidence suggests an opportunistic entomophagous diet of the White Stork Ciconia ciconia in Sicily during breeding and post-breeding periods

2022

Insects are known to represent a critical part of the White Stork Ciconia ciconia diet throughout its breeding range. Yet, the composition of the diet in the storks breeding in the Mediterranean regions remains poorly explored. Here, we investigated the diet of a population of white storks from Sicily through pellets collected in 2003, 2007, and 2020. A total of 1,928 prey items were identified and classified into six categories. Insects dominated the diet in all years and represented 99.06% of the whole prey number. Two orders of insects were mainly consumed, namely Orthoptera, which were the most frequent prey, followed by Coleoptera. Within these, carabid beetles were dominant, followed …

Effects of feeding frequency on growth and food utilisation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed low-fat herring or dry pellets

1998

Abstract One-year-old rainbow trout (weight range 400–700 g) were fed for 18 weeks on low-fat herring or commercial dry pellets 1, 2 or 4 times in a day. Quadratic regression analysis indicated that at least three feedings were required for maximum growth and that fish fed a dry diet could benefit from even more frequent feeding. The proportion of lipid in growth increased with increased number of feedings, but the protein content was not affected (mean 18.6% protein wet basis). Food consumption (dry weight) was affected in a similar manner for both diets and its maximum occurred at slightly higher frequency than for maximum growth. No effects of feeding frequency or type of diet on energy …

Fecal pellets from a dense aggregation of suspension-feeders in a stream: An example of ecosystem engineering

1998

Blackfly larvae (Diptera: Simuliidae) are "allogenic ecosystem engineers" that capture fine particulate and dissolved matter from suspension and egest much larger fecal pellets. We investigated the effects of blackfly larvae on organic matter transport at 25 sites along a small stream that flowed 500 m from a lake to the sea. Blackfly density was high upstream (>6 x 10(5) ind. m(-2)) and the numbers of fecal pellets in suspension rose markedly downstream from the blackfly aggregation. A total of 1.6 x 10(9) fecal pellets (biomass 3.2 kg C d(-1)) were discharged to the sea each day and 8.0 x 10(8) pellets (biomass 1.6 kg C d(-1)) were lost from suspension. Sedimenting pellets were available …

Random-strain-field effects on the low-temperature state of KCN

1991

Random strain fields have been introduced into samples of KCN by pressing pellets from powder and by thermal cycling. X-ray diffractograms show that the low-temperature structure depends strongly on the sample history. In some cycles the noncubic low-temperature phases have been suppressed in mesoscopic surface regions of the samples and the quadrupolar-glass state formed instead.
