Crack formation and cleaving of sapphire with ultrafast bessel beams
2017
Sapphire is a transparent crystalline dielectric of high hardness with many important applications, specifically to the next-generation touchscreens and to the LED growth, as substrates. However, sapphire cutting by ablative techniques is rather slow therefore fast material separation techniques are needed. Material separation by “stealth dicing” has been recently developed, it is based on material cleaving along a plane weakened by multiple ultrafast laser illuminations. This allows usually generating taper-free cutting and avoids material loss. However, the illuminated plane needs small spacing between the shot to shot (typically a few μm) and long damages inside the bulk. This requires l…
FTIR quantitative analysis of calcium carbonate (calcite) and silica (quartz) mixtures using the constant ratio method. Application to geological sam…
2002
A methodology for quantifying calcium carbonate (875 and 712 cm(-1)) and silica (798 and 779 cm(-1)) by FTIR spectroscopy applying the constant ratio method is proposed. The studied method is applied for quantitative analysis of calcite and quartz in geological samples. The suggested method uses potassium ferricyanide (2115 cm(-1)) as standard and samples are prepared as potassium bromide pellets, with statistically satisfactory results (relative standard deviation less than 5%). The influence of particle size (pulverised samples) on the accuracy of the results found by FTIR spectroscopy applying the constant ratio method has been studied. The granulometric study suggests that the homogenei…
Correlation between the DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and sperm morphology of infertile patients
2020
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the correlation between the DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) and sperm morphology in patients undergoing ICSI, as a predictive parameter in reproductive outcomes. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 125 infertile patients enrolled in a fertility clinic. Seminal characteristics were measured following the WHO guidelines (2010) for the examination of the seminal fluid. After collecting motile sperm population by pellet swim up, DFI was calculated and simultaneously associated with sperm morphology using in situ TUNEL assay and an image analyzer software in at least 250 spermatozoa for each patient. Results All subjects were divided into two groups accordin…
Timing of Triggering in Relation to the Cardiac Cycle in Nonelite Rifle Shooters
2003
This study investigated the timing of the trigger pull in relation to the cardiac cycle during air rifle shooting. Electrocardiogram) was recorded from 20 male nonelite rifle shooters in two separate testing sessions. The testing was conducted at an indoor shooting range using an optoelectronic shooting system. Each participant fired a shot in the standing position at a distance of 10 m from the target. The results showed that compared to random triggering, the shooters fired more often during the phase of 10-50% of the R wave-to-R wave (R-R) interval and less often during the phase of 50-90%. With regard to performance accuracy, the participants exhibited average or above average performan…
Airborne bio-aerosols and noise in a dry waste treatment plant in Pietarsaari, Finland
2001
Ewapower Ltd in Pietarsaari, Finland produces pellets from paper and plastic waste for burning. During 1998 and 1999, several measurements were made to determine the dust, particle, microbe and endotoxin concentrations, and also the noise level in the hall where the waste is received and pre-crushed. The noise level exceeded the Finnish recommended level of 85 dBA. The dust and the particle concentrations were low, but the microbe concentrations, especially in the summer and in the autumn, were at a level which may be harmful to health. The total concentration of microbes (both dead and alive) was high - approximately 4.8 million particles m-3. The concentrations of endotoxins was high in …
ESR response to gamma-rays of alanine pellets containing B(OH)3 or Gd2O3.
2007
ESR response to gamma-irradiation (1-50 Gy) of blends containing alanine and either B(OH)(3) or Gd(2)O(3) is reported. The sensitivity of the alanine--B(OH)(3) blend is comparable to the sensitivity of pure alanine, although its lowest detectable dose, LDD, is smaller ( approximately 1.3 Gy) than that of pure alanine ( approximately 2.9 Gy). Alanine with Gd(2)O(3) is about two times more sensitive than pure alanine, and its LDD is 0.8 Gy. The better sensitivity and LDD are probably due to the high atomic number (Z=64) of gadolinium, which enhances the interaction probability with photons and, consequently, the radical yield. This study suggests that other high-Z atoms may be useful for incr…
Comparison of EPR response of alanine and Gd2O3-alanine dosimeters exposed to TRIGA Mainz reactor.
2015
In this work we report some preliminary results regarding the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of alanine pellets and alanine pellets added with gadolinium used for dosimetry at the TRIGA research reactor in Mainz, Germany. Two set-ups were evaluated: irradiation inside PMMA phantom and irradiation inside boric acid phantom. We observed that the presence of Gd2O3 inside alanine pellets increases the EPR signal by a factor of 3.45 and 1.24 in case of PMMA and boric acid phantoms, respectively. We can conclude that in the case of neutron beam with a predominant thermal neutron component the addition of gadolinium oxide can significantly improve neutron sensitivity of…
Arsenic(III) Removal at Low Concentrations by Biosorption usingPhanerochaete chrysosporiumPellets
2013
As(III) removal from dilute aqueous solutions by biosorption onto pellets of the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium was investigated. The As(III) uptake capacity was evaluated at low initial concentrations (0.2–1 mg/L) which revealed that the P. chrysosporium pellets were only slightly less efficient than the well studied adsorbent granular ferric hydroxide. Moreover, its performance was much more superior compared to anaerobic granular sludge, another cheaply available bacterial biosorbent. In the studied pH (5–9) and biomass concentration (0.25–1.5 g/L wet weight basis) ranges, no large differences in As(III) removal efficiency were observed. The influence of different ions, com…
Discovery of indigoid-containing clay pellets from La Blanca: significance with regard to the preparation and use of Maya Blue
2014
Analytical studies using extraction/liquid chromatography, pyrolysis–silylation gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, visible and infrared spectroscopies, solid state voltammetry and electron microscopy on a set of spherical greenish pellets discovered in the Structure 4H1 of the ancient Maya site of La Blanca (Peten Department, Guatemala), dated in the Terminal Classic period, confirm the presence of indigoids (dehydroindigo, indigo) associated to palygorskite. The appearance of such pieces, whose origin and function is uncertain, but most likely correspond to residuals of a decorative plaster, can be considered as indicative of the use of Maya Blue in a quotidian context, thus suggesting …
Argenti messinesi del XVII e XVIII secolo
2015
