Analysis of propionate‐degrading consortia from agricultural biogas plants

2016

Abstract In order to investigate the propionate‐degrading community of agricultural biogas plants, four propionate‐degrading consortia (Ap1a, N12, G12, and Wp2a) were established from different biogas plants which were fed with renewable resources. The consortia were cultivated in a batch for a period of 2–4 years and then analyzed in an 8‐week batch experiment for microbial succession during propionate degradation. Community shifts showed considerable propagation of Syntrophobacter sulfatireducens, Cryptanaerobacter sp./Pelotomaculum sp., and “Candidatus Cloacamonas sp.” in the course of decreasing propionate concentration. Methanogenic species belonged mainly to the genera Methanosarcina,…

Gut dysbiosis and adaptive immune response in diet-induced obesity vs. Systemic inflammation

2017

A mutual interplay exists between adaptive immune system and gut microbiota. Altered gut microbial ecosystems are associated with the metabolic syndrome, occurring in most obese individuals. However, it is unknown why 10-25% of obese individuals are metabolically healthy, while normal weight individuals can develop inflammation and atherosclerosis. We modelled these specific metabolic conditions in mice fed with a chow diet, an obesogenic but not inflammatory diet - mimicking healthy obesity, or Paigen diet - mimicking inflammation in the lean subjects. We analysed a range of markers and cytokines in the aorta, heart, abdominal fat, liver and spleen, and metagenomics analyses were performed…

Elaboración y validación biomecánica de un guante de protección para jugar a pelota valenciana. (Elaboration and biomechanical validation of a protec…

2012

Chronic and Acute Effects on Skin Temperature from a Sport Consisting of Repetitive Impacts from Hitting a Ball with the Hands.

2022

Valencian handball consists in hitting the ball with the hands and it may contribute to injury development on the hands. This study aimed to analyze skin temperature asymmetries and recovery after a cold stress test (CST) in professional players of Valencian handball before and after a competition. Thirteen professional athletes and a control group of ten physically active participants were measured. For both groups, infrared images were taken at the baseline condition; later they underwent a thermal stress test (pressing for 2 min with the palm of the hand on a metal plate) and then recovery images were taken. In athletes, the images were also taken after their competition. Athletes at bas…

Fever and rhomboid target lesion in decompensated cirrhosis

2012

A 53-year-old woman with Child-Pugh B, hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis presented with a 3 day history of high fever (peak 39·5°C) and a non-itchy rash. On admission, physical examination showed mild ascites, and a temperature of 38·5°C, a pulse rate of 88 beats per min, and a respiratory rate of 18 breaths per min were recorded. Many large (about 15 cm diameter) target lesions were present on the patient’s trunk and arms and legs, seen as concentric rings of a dull red, pink, or violet colour surrounding a clear centre (fi gure). No mucosal lesions were noted. Laboratory tests recorded a white-blood-cell count of 12×109 cells per L and a C-reactive protein concentration of 3·4 mg/L. Abd…

Sepsis due to Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in a Patient with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Associated with Bronchopneumonia due to PSeudomonas aerugin…

2015

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infections can typically be attributed to exposure to animal products; thus, these infections are more common among farmers, butchers and veterinarians, among others. This article describes a case involving a 54-year-old man who had relative neutropenia subsequent to treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The patient developed E rhusiopathiae bacteremia with concomitant pneumonia. The author of this article suggests a likely route of infection, which is atypical considering the patient did not report exposure to animal products.

Traffic congestion reduction based on vehicle platoons and intelligent crossroads interactions

2021

Intersections are at the core of urban congestion. For more than a decade, new approaches based on autonomous and connected driving have been proposed. They aim to improve the performance of traffic control at intersections, by harnessing connectivity and driving automation (longitudinal control). These approaches have in common the fact that vehicles can negotiate together their right of way to use the conflicting space. However, they are different in terms of the way they share the space and optimization techniques. The challenge is to define the sequence of access of vehicles to the common space (which one goes first, which is the second, and so on) and the speed profile of vehicles to a…

Impact of deterrence theory methods on employees' information security behavior

2017

Common Misunderstandings of Deterrence Theory in Information Systems Research and Future Research Directions

2022

In the 1980s, information systems (IS) borrowed deterrence theory (DT) from the field of criminology to explain information security behaviors (or intention). Today, DT is among the most commonly used theories in IS security research. Our review of IS research applying DT highlights that many fundamental assumptions of DT are unrecognized and therefore unexamined. This may have resulted in misunderstandings and conceptual confusions regarding some of the basic concepts of DT. For example, some IS studies confuse general deterrence with specific deterrence or do not recognize the difference between the two. Moreover, these fundamental assumptions, when directly examined, may provide importan…
