Regularized LMS methods for baseline wandering removal in wearable ECG devices
2016
The acquisition of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals by means of light and reduced size devices can be usefully exploited in several health-care applications, e.g., in remote monitoring of patients. ECG signals, however, are affected by several artifacts due to noise and other disturbances. One of the major ECG degradation is represented by the baseline wandering (BW), a slowly varying change of the signal trend. Several BW removal algorithms have been proposed into the literature, even though their complexity often hinders their implementation into wearable devices characterized by limited computational and memory resources. In this study, we formalize the BW removal problem as a mean-square…
Cohesive Model for the Simulation of Crack Initiation and Propagation in Mixed-Mode I/II in Composite Materials
2019
A cohesive element able to connect and simulate crack growth between independently modeled finite element subdomains with non-matching meshes is proposed and validated. The approach is based on penalty constraints and has several advantages over conventional FE techniques in disconnecting two regions of a model during crack growth. The most important is the ability to release portion of the interface that are smaller than the local finite element length. Thus, the growth of delamination is not limited to advancing by releasing nodes of the FE model, which is a limitation common to the methods found in the literature. Furthermore, it is possible to vary the penalty parameter within the cohes…
2018
This paper is an study about the penalty of forced labor, inside the historical and legal framework in which took place the criminal law codification of 19th century (Criminal Codes of 1822, 1848 and 1870) and the departure from the Criminal Law of Ancient Regime
EFFICIENCY AND JUSTICE IN EUROPEAN CONTRACT LAW
2008
Abstract: In the last century, refl ections on contract law have been almost entirely dominated by classical contract theory and laissez–faire ideology, while open considerations of effi ciency and justice have played a marginal role. The rise of European contract law has gradually led to the abandonment of traditional arguments typical of national private laws and has sparked a growing debate on effi ciency and justice. This trend does not always contribute to the quality of the debate, as it is often ideologically polarized between ‘right wing’ arguments pleading in favour of marketoriented polices and ‘left wing’ arguments in support of consumers’ rights, both proposing solutions inspir…
Black box scatter search for general classes of binary optimization problems
2010
The purpose of this paper is to apply the scatter search methodology to general classes of binary problems. We focus on optimization problems for which the solutions are represented as binary vectors and that may or may not include constraints. Binary problems arise in a variety of settings, including engineering design and statistical mechanics (e.g., the spin glass problem). A distinction is made between two sets of general constraint types that are handled directly by the solver and other constraints that are addressed via penalty functions. In both cases, however, the heuristic treats the objective function evaluation as a black box. We perform computational experiments with four well-k…

Combined proton NMR wideline and NMR relaxometry to study SOM-water interactions of cation-treated soils
2013
Abstract Focusing on the idea that multivalent cations affect SOM matrix and surface, we treated peat and soil samples by solutions of NaCl, CaCl2 or AlCl3. Water binding was characterized with low field 1H-NMR-relaxometry (20 MHz) and 1H wideline NMR spectroscopy (400 MHz) and compared to contact angles. From 1H wideline, we distinguished mobile water and water involved in water molecule bridges (WaMB). Large part of cation bridges (CaB) between SOM functional groups are associated with WaMB. Unexpectedly, 1H NMRrelaxometry relaxation rates suggest that cross-linking in the Al-containing peat is not stronger than that by Ca. The relation between percentage of mobile water and WaMB water in…
High-fidelity analysis of multilayered shells with cut-outs via the discontinuous Galerkin method
2021
Abstract A novel numerical method for the analysis of multilayered shells with cut-outs is presented. In the proposed approach, the shell geometry is represented via either analytical functions or NURBS parametrizations , while generally-shaped cut-outs are defined implicitly within the shell modelling domain via a level set function . The multilayered shell problem is addressed via the Equivalent-Single-Layer approach whereby high-order polynomial functions are employed to approximate the covariant components of the displacement field throughout the shell thickness. The shell governing equations are then derived from the Principle of Virtual Displacements of three-dimensional elasticity an…
