Linking structure and nanomechanical properties via instrumented nanoindentations on well-defined and fine-tuned morphology poly(ethylene)

Several poly(ethylene) samples with a broad range of morphologies were studied in this work using nanoindentations. The samples had degrees of crystallinity ranging from 30 to 100% while their Young's modulus ranged from few tens of MPa up to several GPa. Experimental conditions for the correct evaluation of Young's modulus were at first identified, choosing a suitable loading rate in order to minimize viscoelastic effects on the unloading. The force curves, i.e., plots of applied load vs. penetration depth, were then analyzed following two common procedures available in the literature. Influence of a Crosslinker Containing an Azo Group on the Actuation Properties of a Photoactuating LCE System

Photoactuating liquid crystalline elastomers (LCE) are promising candidates for an application as artificial muscles in microdevices. In this work, we demonstrate that by optimizing (1) the illumination conditions and (2) the mixture of azo monomer and azo crosslinker, thick films of an all-azo LCE can be prepared, which show a strong length change without bending during photoactuation. This becomes possible by working with white light (about 440 nm), whose absorption is low, leading to a large penetration depth. Statistical prediction of corrosion front penetration

A statistical method to predict the stochastic evolution of corrosion fronts has been developed. The method is based on recording material loss and maximum front depth. In this paper we introduce the method and test its applicability. In the absence of experimental data we use simulation data from a three-dimensional corrosion model for this test. The corrosion model simulates localized breakdown of a protective oxide layer, hydrolysis of corrosion product and repassivation of the exposed surface. Real-Time Monitoring of Intergranular Corrosion Damage on AA2024

The total porosity induced by the intergranular corrosion was selected as a monitoring parameter to follow in real-time the defect propagation of AA2024. The pertinence of eddy current (EC) probing has been tested on very thin foils of AA2024 (30 μm in thickness) in immersion conditions under potentiostatic control and in atmospheric conditions simulated by controlled salt spray experiments. Materials and Methods: Fifty freshly extracted mandibular first premolars were taken and sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction. Novel laser technologies for human skin in-vivo assessment

Two experimental methodologies for human skin optical non-invasive in-vivo assessment have been developed and clinically tested - imaging of the laser-excited autofluorescence fading rate, and simultaneous recording of the reflectance photoplethysmography signals at several laser wavelengths with different skin penetration depths. Details of both equipments are described along with some measurement results illustrating feasibility of the novel technologies.

Challenges in automated estimation of capillary refill time in dogs

Capillary refill time (CRT) is a part of the cardiorespiratory examination in dogs. Changes in CRT can reflect pathological conditions like shock or anemia. Visual CRT estimation has low repeatability; therefore, optical systems for automated estimation have recently appeared. Since existing systems are unsuitable for use in dogs, we designed a simple, small and portable device, which could be easily used at veterinary clinic.
