Electron trapping centres and cross sections in LiNbO3studied by57Co Mössbauer emission spectroscopy

1999

Fast electron trapping processes and aliovalent charge states following the 57Co(EC)57Fe decay are studied in undoped, 5.4 mol% Mg-doped and 0.1 mol% Fe-doped LiNbO3 in various thermochemical reduction (TCR) states. Static 57Co Mossbauer emission spectra of congruent Mg:LiNbO3 recorded at T = 4.2 K in external magnetic field of 4.6 T are presented. Trapping cross section ratios are derived for Fe3+Li, Nb5+Li and Mg2+Li. A method to determine trap concentrations for TCR states of LiNbO3 is outlined. The electron-capture distance of the traps is found to be 2.7±1.4 nm. As this is much smaller than the 6 keV Auger-electron penetration depth, it is concluded that the distribution of the alioval…

An In Vitro Experiment for Postmortem Vascular Permeation. The Passage of Morphine and Morphine Glucuronides Across a Vascular Wall

1997

A venous blood sample taken at autopsy cannot be considered to represent the antemortem blood concentration of a particular substance. Autolytic processes cause disintegration and increasing permeability of the physiological and anatomical barriers such as vascular walls and lead to changes in substance concentrations. In the present study, the experimental design represents an in vitro postmortem simulation of a drug substance crossing a venous wall. The postmortem behavior of morphine, morphine-3- and morphine-6-glucuronide was investigated. A Chien-Valia-diffusion chamber with a patch of inferior vena cava as diffusion barrier was used. For optimal simulation of postmortem events, vein s…

Porous structure of fibre networks formed by a foaming process: a comparative study of different characterization techniques

2016

Recent developments in making fibre materials using the foam-forming technology have raised a need to characterize the porous structure at low material density. In order to find an effective choice among all structure-characterization methods, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques were used to explore the porous structure of foam-formed samples made with two different types of cellulose fibre. These techniques included X-ray microtomography, scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, direct surface imaging using a CCD camera and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The mean pore radius for a varying type of fibre and for varying foam properties was described similarly by all …

Intensity and persistence of water repellency at different soil moisture contents and depths after a forest wildfire

2022

Abstract The Mediterranean mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest of Moarda (Palermo) was affected by a large wildfire in summer 2020. In spring 2021, burned and unburned loam soil sites were sampled and the water drop penetration time (WDPT) and ethanol percentage (EP) tests applied to assess the influence of wetting-drying processes and soil water content on post-fire soil water repellency (SWR) as well as its vertical distribution. According to the WDPT test, the surface layer of the natural unburned soils was severely hydrophobic at intermediate soil water contents roughly corresponding to wilting point and SWR reduced either for very dry conditions (air- or oven-dried conditions) or …

Enhanced tissue penetration of antibodies through pressurized immunohistochemistry

2020

ABSTRACTTo address the inefficiency of passive diffusion for antibody penetration in thick tissue samples, which limits clearing-technique applications, we developed a versatile and simple device to perform antibody incubation under increased barometric pressure. Pressurized immunohistochemistry greatly improves the uniformity, intensity, and depth of fluorescent immunostaining in thick human and mouse brain samples. Furthermore, pressurized immunohistochemistry substantially decreases the time required for classic staining of thin sections.SUBMISSION CATEGORYNew Results

The Impact of Solar Penetration on Solar and Gas Market Value: An Application to the Italian Power Market

2014

We assess the impact of solar penetration in the Italian wholesale electricity market on the market value of solar with respect to gas sources, measured as the ratio between the relative price they respectively earn and the average daily electricity price (value factor). We find that, on average, an increase of solar generation has a negative impact on the price earned by solar producers, thus causing a marginal departure from the grid parity condition. The relation between solar production and its market value is not constant over the years, while it depends on the degree of solar penetration. It is positive for very low levels of solar production while, as production increases, its margin…

Solvent Determines Nature of Effective Interactions between Nanoparticles in Polymer Brushes

2015

We study the effective interaction between two parallel rod-like nanoparticles in swollen and collapsed polymer brushes as a function of penetration depth by 2D self-consistent field calculations. In vertical direction, the interaction is always attractive. In lateral direction, the behavior under good and poor solvent conditions is qualitatively different. In swollen brushes (good solvent), nanoparticles always repel each other. In collapsed brushes (poor solvent), we identify two different regimes: an immersed regime, where the nanoparticles are fully surrounded by the brush, and an interfacial regime, where they are located in the interface between brush and solvent. In the immersed regi…

Nanoscale mechanical characterization of polymers by AFM nanoindentations: Critical approach to the elastic characterization

2006

AFM nanoindentations show a dependence of penetration, i.e., the relative motion between the sample and the tip (indenter), on material elastic properties when using the same load. This elationship becomes visible by using of samples being homogeneous down to the scale of nanoindentation. They were prepared from materials covering a broad range of mechanical behavior: from rubbery networks to glassy and semicrystalline polymers. The elastic modulus can be obtained applying Sneddon’s elastic contact mechanics approach. To do this, some calibrations and instrumental features have to be measured accurately. All the polymers tested show that the contact between the tip and the sample is dominat…

Positron Lifetime in Hostaphan

2006

Positron lifetime measurements in hostaphan RNK, used for encapsulation of Na positron sources, were performed. It was found that the parameter of positron lifetime spectra in hostaphan RNK differ markedly from those for other forms of polyethylene terephthalate. The maximum penetration depth of positrons from RNK hostaphan amounts 0.42 mm. The information gained in the present study is of great importance for experimenters using hostaphan RNK for encapsulation of positron sources.
