An annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus

Introduction. Following on from work on the European bryophyte Red List, the taxonomically and nomenclaturally updated spreadsheets used for that project have been expanded into a new checklist for the bryophytes of Europe. Methods. A steering group of ten European bryologists was convened, and over the course of a year, the spreadsheets were compared with previous European checklists, and all changes noted. Recent literature was searched extensively. A taxonomic system was agreed, and the advice and expertise of many European bryologists sought. Key results. NMR structure determination of (11E)-trinervita-1(14),2,11-triene, a new diterpene from sexual glands of termites

Analysis of NMR, IR, and mass spectra of the diterpene led to a structure of (11E)-trinervita-1(14),2,11-triene. Based on a comparison with the published oxygenated trinervitane skeleton from termites we prefer the enantiomer with absolute configurations (4R,7S,8R,15S,16S). Stabilization of an enzymatic extract from Penicillium camemberti containing lipoxygenase and hydroperoxide lyase activities

International audience; The stabilization of an enzymatic extract, obtained from Penicillium camemberti containing lipoxygenase (LOX) and hydroperoxide lyase (HPL) activities, was investigated using selected additives. Although the addition of KCl (86%, w/w) to the enzymatic extract decreased slightly (7%) the LOX activity, it increased HPL activity by 2.25 fold; however, the addition of dextran resulted in the inactivation of both enzymatic activities. The stability of the solid lyophilized enzymatic extract was greater in the presence of KCl than that without it, with ∼100% residual activity after 8 and 4 weeks of storage at −80 °C, for LOX and HPL, respectively. Abstract The species of the genus Aequiyoldia Soot-Ryen, 1951, previously known as Yoldia, are common, soft-substratum, sareptid bivalves. In the Southern Ocean, Aequiyoldia eightsii (Jay, 1839) was originally described from the Antarctic Peninsula and has also been reported in southern South America. The species A. woodwardi (Hanley, 1960) was reported for the Falkland/Malvinas Islands and Tierra del Fuego, but this taxon has been recently synonymised within the broadly distributed A. eightsii. A harvestman with elaborate palpal pliers, Thunbergia gretae n. gen. n. sp. from China (Opiliones: Sclerosomatidae: Gagrellinae)

Abstract Based on the unusual characteristics of the male pedipalp and male genital morphology, a new genus and new species of Gagrellinae harvestmen, Thunbergia gretae n. gen. n. sp. (male and female) from Shaanxi Province, China, is proposed. The tibia and tarsus of the pedipalp form elaborate palpal claws, resembling gaspipe pliers, probably used to grasp the legs or the pedipalps of the female during courtship. There is no comparable modification of the pedipalp in the female. Abstract Post-harvest spoilage fungi in tomatoes represent an economic loss for industry and consumers. There is currently an increasing demand for novel applications of bio-preservatives as replacers of chemical additives and pesticides in food. Antifungal activity and shelf life extension of loaf bread produced with sourdough fermented by Lactobacillus strains

The objective of this study was to evaluate a water‐soluble extract from sourdoughs fermented with the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for antifungal reflect on loaf bread. The extracts produced by Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 749 and L. bulgaricus CECT 4005 were effective against strains of Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., and Aspergillus spp., with minimum inhibitory concentration ranging from 1.6 to 200 mg/ml and minimum fungicidal concentration from 1.6 to 400 mg/ml. Aim: To propose a Finite Mixture Model (FMM) as an additional approach for classifying large datasets of georeferenced vegetation plots from complex vegetation systems. Study area: The Italian peninsula including the two main islands (Sicily and Sardinia), but excluding the Alps and the Po plain.
