Color illusions also deceive CNNs for low-level vision tasks: Analysis and implications.

2019

The study of visual illusions has proven to be a very useful approach in vision science. In this work we start by showing that, while convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained for low-level visual tasks in natural images may be deceived by brightness and color illusions, some network illusions can be inconsistent with the perception of humans. Next, we analyze where these similarities and differences may come from. On one hand, the proposed linear eigenanalysis explains the overall similarities: in simple CNNs trained for tasks like denoising or deblurring, the linear version of the network has center-surround receptive fields, and global transfer functions are very similar to the human …

Are Retailers' Perceptions of Their Innovativeness and Technology Similar to Those of Consumers?

2020

This chapter explores the relationship between retail innovativeness and the level of technological advancement as well as the ICT solutions implemented by store chains of four retail activities – e.g. grocery, textile, electronics, and furniture and decoration. Innovation may become a source of sustainable competitive advantage in the highly competitive environments where retailers have to operate. In this chapter, retailers and consumers' perceptions are compared in order to assess if retailers' expectations of their efforts in innovation and ICT investment match with consumer perceptions about these decisions. Evidence exists of significant differences in consumer perceptions and behavio…

Female Leadership in Software Projects—A Preliminary Result on Leadership Style and Project Context Factors

2017

Women have been shown to be effective leaders in many team-based situations. However, it is also well-recognized that women are underrepresented in engineering and technology areas, which leads to wasted efforts and a lack of diversity in professional organizations. Although studies about gender and leadership are rich, research focusing on engineering-specific activities, are scarce. To react on this gap, we explored the experience of female leaders of software development projects and possible context factors that influence leadership effectiveness. The study was conducted as a longitudinal multiple case study. Data was collected from survey, interviews, observation and project reports. I…

Currently, there are various definitions for extreme sports and researchers in the field have been unable to advance a consensus on what exactly constitutes an 'extreme' sport. Traditional theory-led explanations, such as edgeworks, sensation seeking and psychoanalysis, have led to inadequate conceptions. These frameworks have failed to capture the depth and nuances of experiences of individuals who refute the notions of risk-taking, adrenaline- and thrill-seeking or death-defiance. Instead, participants are reported to describe experiences as positive, deeply meaningful and life-enhancing. The constant evolution of emerging participation styles and philosophies, expressed within and across…

The self-organizing consciousness

2003

We propose that the isomorphism generally observed between the representations composing our momentary phenomenal experience and the structure of the world is the end-product of a progressive organization that emerges thanks to elementary associative processes that take our conscious representations themselves as the stuff on which they operate, a thesis that we summarize in the concept of Self-Organizing Consciousness (SOC).
