Stress concentration for closely located inclusions in nonlinear perfect conductivity problems

We study the stress concentration, which is the gradient of the solution, when two smooth inclusions are closely located in a possibly anisotropic medium. The governing equation may be degenerate of $p-$Laplace type, with $1<p \leq N$. We prove optimal $L^\infty$ estimates for the blow-up of the gradient of the solution as the distance between the inclusions tends to zero.

During the course of an investigation on the Pythiaceous oomycetes occurring in the Burgundian vineyards, some species of Pythium possessing mainly hypogynous antheridia were found. These had been classified as oomycetes belonging to the ‘‘Pythium rostratum’’ group for a long time. Three of these isolates, having similar structures and growth, are very closely related to a recently described species, Pythium bifurcatum Paul. A close look at these, however, underlines some fundamental differences with the latter. Not all of them produce zoospores but have very large sporangia. In the traditional preventive maintenance policy, the periodic maintenance activities are scheduled on the basis of the a-priori information about the failure behaviour of the population which the component belongs to, by assuming a probability distribution function and by estimating the involved statistical parameters. Abstract 1 A biochemical method, based on dehydrogenase activity (DHA) measurement, has been developed as an alternative to colony forming unit (CFU) enumeration, for assessing the viability of fungal spores. In viable cells, a tetrazolium salt (MTT) is reduced to a coloured formazan (MTTf) by cellular dehydrogenase enzymes. From the colorimetric assay developed by Mosmann for mammalian cells, the procedure has been adapted and optimised using P. digitatum spores as a model. Propan-2-ol has been selected as the best solvent to extract the MTTf from the spores. Specific immunohistochemical identification of Candida albicans in paraffin-embedded tissue with a new monoclonal antibody (1B12).

In invasive candidiasis, the identification of Candida organisms in tissue samples or in normally sterile fluids is essential for an accurate diagnosis. Species identification is an important clue for the source of infection and in epidemiological studies. In this article, the authors have tested the value of a new monoclonal antibody (1B12) to detect C albicans in culture by immunofluorescence, and in tissue samples by immunohistochemistry. Analysis of composite laminates with imperfect bonding conditions

A multidomain boundary integral formulation for the analysis of composite laminates with imperfect interlaminar interfaces is presented. An imperfect interface refers to a zero-thickness interfacial layer across which displacement discontinuity may occur while interlaminar tractions must remain continuous. The displacement discontinuity is considered through a spring model in order to model the adhesive layer among two adjacent laminae. Three distinctively difierent implementations of convolu- tional perfectly matched layer for the FDTD method on CUDA enabled graphics processing units are presented. All implementations store ad- ditional variables only inside the convolutional perfectly matched lay- ers, and the computational speeds scale according to the thickness of these layers. The merits of the difierent approaches are discussed, and a comparison of computational performance is made using complex real-life benchmarks.

Boundary elements analysis of adhesively bonded piezoelectric active repair

Abstract This paper presents the analysis of active piezoelectric patches for cracked structures by the boundary element method. A two-dimensional boundary integral formulation based on the multidomain technique is used to model cracks and to assemble the multi-layered piezoelectric patches to the host damaged structures. The fracture mechanics behavior of the repaired structures is analyzed for both perfect and imperfect interface between patches and host beams. Improved embedded molecular cluster model

We demonstrate that boundary effects (i.e., displacements of the cluster boundary atoms from their lattice sites and the difference between effective charges of the perfect crystal atoms and those of the cluster atoms in the case of a cluster with no point defect in it) in an embedded molecular cluster (EMC) model can be radically reduced. A new embedding scheme is proposed.
