De La Biografia Històrica a la Novel·la Cavalleresca: El Paper Dels Cavallers Francesos Al Victorial i Al Curial e Güelfa
2010
Between 1400 and 1412 (forty years before the writing of Curial e Guelfa), a reduced number of French and Catalan soldiers and knights —Boucicaut, Guillaume du Chastel and Pere Cervello— were involved in a series of chivalric warfare and military actions, which must have been the inspiration for the composition of some Catalan (Curial e Guelfa) and French fictions (Le petit Jehan of Saintre by Antoine de La Sale). Taking into account the references to these characters, places, and actions included in El Victorial —Count Pero Nino's Castilian biography—, this article tries to analyze the impact of the fame of these European knights, whose outstanding feats were widely celebrated by history, …

Una Poètica Dialògica: Atlas de Pere Salinas i Joan Navarro
2012
Pere Salinas and Joan Navarro initiated with Atlas (Correspondencia 2005-2007) a dialogue between painting and poetry. The book starts with a painting by Pere Salinas, which provokes a poem by Joan Navarro, which in turn provokes a painting. It continues this way until getting to 46 images and 46 poems. The concept of dialogism allows analyzing how alterity, the orientation towards a nonverbal answer, determines poetical writing. The poet, in his dialogue with each pictorial text, searches for new ways of expression that privilege the showing, from deictics to images, and this search leads to an experimentation that alters the entire poetical system. Time and space are not opposed. Painting…
This article explore…

The cinematic image of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera: somewhere between a leader and a saint
2009
The Franco regime carefully cultivated the image of José Antonio Primo de Rivera in a way which differed significantly from the approach adopted by other European dictatorships. Whereas other countries used the media, specifically cinema, to highlight the charisma of their current leader, the Franco regime concentrated on building up a posthumous image of Primo de Rivera as a fallen hero. For decades to come, Spaniards would be subjected to a funerary cult. There were clearly some advantages to this tactic of diverting attention away from the actual leader, not least for Franco himself. The persona reconstructed around Primo de Rivera underwent a morbid transformation from politician to pro…
Media-induced recovery: The effects of positive versus negative media stimuli on recovery experience, cognitive performance, and energetic arousal.
2017
Recent research has demonstrated that the use of hedonically positive interactive media content contributes to the satisfaction of recovery needs and is associated with recovery outcomes such as higher levels of cognitive performance and increased energetic arousal. The recovery effects of noninteractive media stimuli as well as of media content with negative affective valence, however, are less clear. The present investigation addressed this limitation of prior research on
Performing ethnography and ethnicity : an early documentation of Finnish immigrants in Nordiska museet
2010
This article discusses the first project of the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, dealing with immigrants. It was carried out between 1972 and 1990, and it produced material based on interviews, participant observation, photographs and other written and visual sources. The article first examines why and how this extensive research project was carried out and then discusses the documentation project as performance. The project was an early attempt to document the contemporary lives of people through fieldwork, although the original aim of this pioneering project was merely to create and preserve ethnic identity by documenting “authentic” Finnish characteristics. Thus, it is a good example …
Post memory and cinematic affect in The Midwife
2017
The Second World War has proved a rich source of inspiration for fiction films worldwide. The Finnish fiction film The Midwife (Kätilö, Antti J. Jokinen, 2015) is aimed at an international audience with a story that takes place in the context of the Lapland War in Finland in 1944. The film tells of a romantic relationship between a local woman and a member of the German army, in a highly affective manner. This article argues that the film downplays elements that might have interested the national, or local, audience, and that it privileges affect over knowledge. To bring out the film’s transnational character, the article begins by analysing it in the context of national, or local, and glob…
