Changes in intracortical circuits of the human motor cortex following theta burst stimulation of the lateral cerebellum

2008

Objective: The cerebellum takes part in several motor functions through its influence on the motor cortex (M1). Here, we applied the theta burst stimulation (TBS) protocol, a novel form of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) over the lateral cerebellum. The aim of this study was to test whether TBS of the lateral cerebellum could be able to modulate the excitability of the contralateral M1 in healthy subjects. Methods: Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) amplitude, short intracortical inhibition (SICI), long intracortical inhibition (LICI) and short intracortical facilitation (SICF) were tested in the M1 before and after cerebellar continuous TBS (cTBS) or intermittent TBS (iTBS)…

Measurement of Duloxetine in Blood Using High-performance Liquid Chromatography with Spectrophotometric Detection and Column Switching

2007

A method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with column switching and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy was developed for the determination of duloxetine in human plasma. After centrifugation and addition of venlafaxine as internal standard, plasma samples were injected into the HPLC system and precleaned on a column (10 x 4.0 mm) filled with cyanopropyl (CN)-modified silica of 20 microm particle size, with use of 8% (vol/vol) acetonitrile in deionized water as eluent. Duloxetine was eluted and separated on a LiChrospher 100 CN (5-microm particle size; column size, 250 x 4.6 mm I.D.) using acetonitrile-water-potassium dihydrogenphosphate trihydrate buffer (pH, 6.4; 50:50 vol/vo…

Metabolism of 3-hydroxychrysene by rat liver microsomal preparations

1990

3-Hydroxychrysene, a metabolite of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) chrysene, was metabolised by rat liver microsomal preparations obtained from Arochlor 1254-pretreated rats. Eight major metabolites were isolated by high performance liquid chromatography and characterised by u.v. spectroscopy and a variety of mass spectrometric techniques. The metabolites were unambiguously identified as 9-hydroxy-trans-1,2-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydrochrysene and 9-hydroxy-r-1,t-2,t-3,c-4-tetrahydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrochrysene and tentatively identified as 3-hydroxy-trans-5,6-dihydroxy-5,6-dihydrochrysene (since chrysene is a symmetrical molecule the 3- and 9-positions are equivalent), 9-hydroxy-trans-…

Disentangling effects of auditory distraction and of stimulus-response sequence

2009

When we pay attention to one task, irrelevant changes may interfere. The effect of changes on behavioral and electrophysiological responses has been studied in two separate research fields: Research on Distraction states that a rare irrelevant change takes attention away from the primary task. Research on Sequences states that any change in stimulus or response incurs a cost or benefit depending on the kind of change. To disentangle distraction from sequence effects, we made task-irrelevant changes rare in one condition and frequent in another while also assessing stimulus and response changes from trial to trial. Participants used key presses to classify syllables presented in two differen…

Relationships between Coping Strategies and Defense Mechanisms in sport performance

2008

In an exploratory study, the relationships between two major concepts in psychological adjustment, coping strategies, and defense mechanisms were investigated. Sport competition is an example of a real-world context in which people's responses to stressful situations can be investigated. The extent to which participants reported different uses of coping strategies and defense mechanisms was assessed in terms of performance. 26 elite kayakers were classified into one of two groups, depending on the discrepancy between their standard performance and their performance in competition. Correlations were found among the coping strategies of seeking social support, positive reappraisal/planful pr…

Mental Toughness Moderates Social Loafing in Cycle Time-Trial Performance

2016

The purpose of this study was to determine if mental toughness moderated the occurrence of social loafing in cycle time-trial performance.Twenty-seven men (Mage = 17.7 years, SD = 0.6) completed the Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire prior to completing a 1-min cycling trial under 2 conditions: once with individual performance identified, and once in a group with individual performance not identified. Using a median split of the mental toughness index, participants were divided into high and low mental toughness groups. Cycling distance was compared using a 2 (trial) × 2 (high-low mental toughness) analysis of variance. We hypothesized that mentally tough participants would perform equall…

The relationship of task self-efficacy and role efficacy beliefs to role performance in Spanish youth soccer

2004

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between role efficacy and role performance after controlling for the effects of task self-efficacy. Two hundred and ninety-five Spanish youth soccer players from 20 teams completed self-report measures of task self-efficacy, role efficacy and role performance at the mid-point of a competitive season. The 20 team coaches also provided ratings of each of their players' role performances at mid-season. Consistent with hypotheses, bivariate correlations showed task self-efficacy and role efficacy were positively related to role performance ratings. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that role efficacy contributed significantly to the …

Discriminatory power of water polo game-related statistics at the 2008 Olympic Games

2011

The aims of this study were (1) to compare water polo game-related statistics by context (winning and losing teams) and sex (men and women), and (2) to identify characteristics discriminating the performances for each sex. The game-related statistics of the 64 matches (44 men's and 20 women's) played in the final phase of the Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2008 were analysed. Unpaired t-tests compared winners and losers and men and women, and confidence intervals and effect sizes of the differences were calculated. The results were subjected to a discriminant analysis to identify the differentiating game-related statistics of the winning and losing teams. The results showed the difference…
