Boundary communication: how smartphone use after hours is associated with work-life conflict and organizational identification
2020
This study investigates how boundary communication mediates the effects of smartphone use for work after hours on work-life conflict and organizational identification. It draws upon boundary theory, work-family border theory, and a structurational view of organizational identification. The research site was a large Scandinavian company operating in the telecommunications industry, with 367 employees responding to a survey at two time periods. In contrast to many studies, the use of information and communication technologies (here, smartphones) for after-hours work was not associated with work-life conflict, but was positively associated with organizational identification. However, communica…
Performing transnational family with the affordances of mobile apps : a case study of Polish mothers living in Finland
2020
Affordances provided by digital technologies and mobile apps (WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger) help in maintaining familyhood. These mobile apps enable the creation of in-app family groups. They also afford image sharing, which is used for phatic purposes. Digital connectivity provides the illusions of togetherness and belonging, and allows for performing family in a transnational context (emotional transnationalism). However, it also generates the feelings of guilt through infrequent communication. In the auto-driven visual elicitation interviews, the study looks at family constellations and technologically mediated communication from the perspective of five Polish mothers living in Finland. Ap…
Families in flux: at the nexus of fluid family configurations and language practices
2021
Research on multilingualism in the home has approached the family as a fixed unit thus neglecting the dynamic view of the family and its intersection with family language practices. The present study aims to address this gap by focusing on Russian-speaking mothers in Finland who have raised their children bilingually in single-parent as well as in dual-parent families. Russian speakers are the largest minority language group in Finland, and their number is constantly growing. The current study is a contribution to the research on family language practices in the Finnish context. It examines the nexus of shifts in family configurations and language practices and explores how the dynamic chan…
Masculinity in flux? : Male managers navigating between work and family
2020
The article sheds light on male managers’ experience as fathers in a post-Soviet context in Lithuania. This empirical study of 12 male managers’ experiences of work-family integration (WFI), their ways of coping with negative experiences, and the role of organizations in reducing conflict and enriching WFI, reveal the emergence of a new paternal identity: fathers who perceive their role as caregivers but for whom this is still subordinate to the dominant role of the breadwinner. Relying on their wife is a man’s dominant coping strategy. Organizations are perceived as family unfriendly. The managerial implications of the need for organizational support are discussed. peerReviewed
Work–Family Practices and Complexity of Their Usage: A Discourse Analysis Towards Socially Responsible Human Resource Management
2020
AbstractThe question of work–family practices commonly arises in both theory and daily practice as a matter of responsibility in today’s organisations. More information is needed about them for socially responsible human resource management (SR-HRM). In this article our interest is in how work–family practices, serve as an important element of SR-HRM, constructed as (un)helpful for employees’ work–family integration, are realised in organisational life. We investigate the discursive ways in which members of two different organisations working at different organisational levels construct the issue in the Finnish context. Three discourses were interpreted: (1) a discourse of compliance with e…
Mikä tekee perheestä perheen? : viidesluokkalaisten käsityksiä perheestä
2017
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää viidesluokkalaisen käsityksiä perheestä. Käsityksiä pyritään löytämään viidesluokkalaisten tuottamien perhepiirustusten avulla. Piirustusten tueksi tutkielman aineistoa täydentävänä osana toimii viidesluokkalaisen vastaukset kysymykseen: Mikä tekee perheestä perheen? Tutkielmaan osallistui 28 viidennen luokan oppilasta. Aineisto kerättiin erään keskipohjanmaalaisen alakoulun kolmelta eri viidenneltä luokalta keväällä 2017. Oppilaat tuottivat perhepiirustuksen ja vastasivat kysymykseen ”Mikä tekee perheestä perheen?”, kukin ryhmä kolmen eri oppitunnin aikana. Aineisto analysoitiin fenomenografisen analyysin mukaisesti. Fenomenografisen analyysin pohjalta…
Domestic Homicide and Emotions from the Late Nineteenth Century to the 1920s
2020
Some scholars have suggested that a significant change in homicides and interpersonal violence occurred in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This new type of violence was characterised by strong feelings between the offender and their victim, and the change was connected to modernisation, changes in power balance between men and women, and individualism. Based on the Court of Appeal documents, we deduced that the murder of one’s spouse, father, or brother were the most prevalent homicides within families in Finland at the time. The Court documents, in conjunction with newspaper accounts, captured the trend of troubled family relationships and demonstrated that lethal family…
Marriage Guidance, Women and the Problem(s) of Returning Soldiers in Finland, 1944-1946
2017
When former military chaplains began to give marital guidance to troubled couples after the end of hostilities with the Soviet Union (1941–1944) in Finland, new information about the causes and experiences of marital problems and divorces emerged during guidance sessions. Even lengthy marriages were seen to be burdened due to the stress of reunion and men’s wartime infidelity, increased inclination to drinking and aggressive behaviour. The article discusses the meaning and construction of marital expectations with respect to the development of post-war marital dissolution, and argues that wives in particular tried to adjust their marital expectations in accordance with the general developme…
Monitahoisten vaatimusten keskellä: Yksinhuoltajaäitien epätyypilliset työajat ja työn ja perhe-elämän yhteensovittaminen
2020
