Exploiting transport properties for the detection of optical pumping in heavy ions

We present a kinetic model for optical pumping in Lu$^+$ and Lr$^+$ ions as well as a theoretical approach to calculate the transport properties of Lu$^+$ in its ground $^1S_0$ and metastable $^3D_1$ states in helium background gas. Calculations of the initial ion state populations, the field and temperature dependence of the mobilities and diffusion coefficients, and the ion arrival time distributions demonstrate that the ground- and metastable-state ions can be collected and discriminated efficiently under realistic macroscopic conditions.

Evidence of quasifission in the 180Hg composite system formed in the 68Zn + 112Sn reaction

Abstract For the 68Zn + 112Sn reaction the Coulomb parameter Z 1 Z 2 is equal to 1500 that is close to the threshold value for the appearance of quasifission process. It was found that mass-energy distributions of the reaction fragments differ significantly from those obtained in the 36Ar + 144Sm reaction leading to the formation of the same composite system of 180Hg at similar excitation energies of about 50 MeV. In the case of the reaction with 68Zn ions, the mass distribution of fissionlike fragments has a wide two-humped shape with maximum yields at 70 and 110 u for the light and heavy fragments, respectively, instead of 80 and 100 u observed in the fission of 180Hg formed in the 36Ar +…
Direct mass measurements of the heaviest elements with Penning traps

Abstract Penning-trap mass spectrometry (PTMS) is a mature technique to provide atomic masses with highest precision. Applied to radionuclides it enables us to investigate their nuclear structure via binding energies and derived quantities such as nucleon separation energies. Recent progress in slowing down radioactive ion beams in buffer gas cells in combination with advanced ion-manipulation techniques has opened the door to access even the elements above fermium by PTMS. Such elements are produced in complete fusion–evaporation reactions of heavy ions with lead, bismuth, and actinide targets at very low rates. Zeptosecond contact times for element Z=120 synthesis

The synthesis of new superheavy elements beyond oganesson (Z=118) requires fusion reactions with projectile nuclei with proton numbers larger than that of $^{48}$Ca (Z=20), which has been successfully employed for the synthesis of elements with Z=112-118. In such reactions, fusion is drastically hindered by fast non-equilibrated dynamical processes. Attempts to produce nuclei with Z=120 using the $^{64}$Ni+$^{238}$U, $^{58}$Fe+$^{244}$Pu, $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm, and $^{50}$Ti+$^{249}$Cf reactions have been made, which all result in larger Coulomb forces than for $^{48}$Ca-induced reactions, but no discovery has been confirmed to date. Fusion reaction Ca48+Bk249 leading to formation of the element Ts ( Z=117 )

The heaviest currently known nuclei, which have up to 118 protons, have been produced in 48Ca induced reactions with actinide targets. Among them, the element tennessine (Ts), which has 117 protons, has been synthesized by fusing 48Ca with the radioactive target 249Bk, which has a half-life of 327 d. The experiment was performed at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Two long and two short α decay chains were observed. The long chains were attributed to the decay of 294Ts. STUDIES OF SUPERHEAVY ELEMENTS AT SHIP

An overview of present experimental investigation of superheavy elements is given. The data are compared with theoretical descriptions. Results are reported from an experiment to confirm production of element 112 isotopes in irradiation of 238 UF 4 with 48 Ca . One spontaneous fission event was measured, which agrees with three events of previously measured data which had been assigned to the decay of 283112. However, more experimental work is needed in order to obtain an independent and unambiguous confirmation of previous results.

Abstract Traditionally the experimental study of heavy and superheavy elements has belonged to the realm of decay spectroscopy and nuclear reactions. Only in the past twenty years or so has it become feasible to study nuclei with Z = 96 and beyond with in-beam spectroscopic techniques. Since the pioneering studies in the late 1990s, development of both instrumentation and experimental techniques has resulted in a significant lowering of the spectroscopic limit for in-beam measurements.
