Parental Burnout Across the Globe During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all societies worldwide. The heightened levels of stress that accompanied the crisis were also expected to affect parenting in many families. Since it is known that high levels of stress in the parenting domain can lead to a condition that has severe consequences for health and well-being, we examined whether the prevalence of parental burnout in 26 countries (9,923 parents; 75% mothers; mean age 40) increased during COVID-19 compared to few years before the pandemic. Our perspective derives from multidisciplinary family studies, including social sciences, psychology and educational sciences. Our concerns include why and how to apply a sensitive approach in studying challenging family relations, and what the key ethical issues are in studies of this kind. This article focuses on the long-term formation of unemployed young adults’ emotional capital and the development of emotional dispositions during childhood. We use Bourdieu’s work and the concept of emotional capital to draw attention to the emotional dynamics of family and peer relations during childhood. Emotional capital is related to parents’ emotional involvement and investment in the child’s well-being, and it encompasses emotional skills and assets that children can attain from family relations. Facilitating mothers’ work–family reconciliation upon their return to work can be considered a viable means of enhancing women’s overall employment participation. This study examined return-to-work reasons among mothers with a one-year-old child, how these reasons are related to mothers’ background characteristics, work-to-family conflict (WFC) and family-to-work conflict (FWC) and whether having a partner home caring for the child protects against such conflicts. Suomalaisten 4-luokkalaisten lukutaito : PIRLS 2016 -tutkimuksen keskeisiä tuloksia

Joulukuussa 2017 julkaistiin kansainvälisen lasten lukutaitotutkimuksen (PIRLS) tulokset (ks. Leino ym. 2017). PIRLS-tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan 4.-luokkalaisten oppilaiden lukutaitoa ja lukemista monin eri tavoin. Keväällä 2016 hieman alle 5 000 oppilasta osallistui lukutaidon kokeeseen, jossa oppilaat vastasivat kaunokirjallisiin ja tietoteksteihin pohjautuviin tehtäviin. Lisäksi oppilaat täyttivät kyselyn, jonka avulla kerättiin tietoja oppilaiden asenteista, erilaisten tekstien lukemisesta ja oppilaan kotitaustasta.
