2021
The increase in international student mobility raises questions of how many international students choose to stay in their host country and the reasons why some stay and others leave. This study examines factors affecting international students to stay in Finland three years after graduation. Tracking 13 (years) graduating cohorts across national (Finland) data registries, we find family ties and labour market opportunities relate to an increased probability an international student stays in Finland three years after graduation. peerReviewed

Yhteistyövanhemmuus eron jälkeen : mitä, miksi ja miten?
2019
Eron jälkeinen yhteistyövanhemmuus on moniulotteinen ilmiö. Yhteistyövanhem- muutta toteuttaessaan aikuiset joutuvat pohtimaan uudella tapaa niin arvojaan, asen- teitaan kuin arkeaan. Eronneet vanhemmat tai muut lapselle läheiset aikuiset tarvitse- vat usein monenlaista tukea yhteistyövanhemmuudessaan. nonPeerReviewed
Lapsen perhe eron jälkeen
2012
Avioerojen yleistymisen seurauksena moni suomalainen lapsi kokee vanhempiensa avioeron ja sitä seuraavat perhesuhteisiin liittyvät muutokset jo hyvinkin varhain eläen keskellä moninaisia perhesuhteita. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman lähtökohtana oli tutkia vanhempiensa eron kokeneiden lasten perhesuhteita sekä lasten kokemuksia vanhempien erosta. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää, kuinka lapset käsitteellistävät oman eron jälkeisen perheensä, millaisina nämä perhesuhteet lasten kertomana ilmenevät sekä miten vanhempien ero on vaikuttanut lapsen elämään ja perhesuhteisiin. Aikaisempi lapsiin kohdistunut avioerotutkimus on kiinnittänyt huomionsa ennemmin avioeron kielteisiin seurauksiin kuin lasten om…
Researching Children’s Multiple Family Relations: Social Network Maps and Life-Lines as Methods
2015
Visual methods are reported to have certain advantages when conducting interviews on sensitive topics, such as intimate spaces, home-related ethical issues, and vulnerable families. In this article, we concentrate on two visual methods: social network maps and life-lines. In our research project on children’s well-being and emotional security in multiple family relations, we collected data by interviewing children and asking them to complete social network maps and life-lines. We discuss the suitability of these two visual methods for describing children’s close relationships with their family members and significant others. Combining these two methods during an interview process with child…
Nurture and play for foster families with young children : Foster-parents’ reflections on attachment-focused group intervention

An insecure attachment history puts foster children at risk for many kinds of difficulties, which may include psychopathology. Nurture and Play (NaP) for foster families–intervention for children aged one to five years of age aims to help the new attachment relationship between foster parents and their young children develop in a secure direction. The aim of this study is to gain deeper understanding on how foster parents use their mentalization skills to reflect the different meanings of the NaP for foster families–intervention. A stimulated recall method was chosen to correspond to these research targets. It was revealed that parents’ reflections were evidently focused on the child, the i…
Re-establishing traditional Czech family businesses : a multiple case study on the present challenges
2004
After virtually 50 years of expropriation and state ownership, a large number of Czech traditional family businesses were returned to their original owners. Despite the volatile and risky socio-economical and political conditions of the early 90’s, many businesses have been re-established by their former family owners and have carried out their activities with varying degrees of success until now.The main goal of this study is to monitor the challenges that family businesses face today and to investigate whether some of these might be facilitated through well suited business education and counseling. The study is a non-positivistic study – a multiple case study performed in the Czech Republ…
Stepmothers’ constructions and negotiations of belonging
2017
Applying a narrative approach and symbolic interactionist frame of reference, this study examines how Finnish stepmothers in their written narratives construct and negotiate their belonging. Belonging is a relevant concept in this study since it focuses on social interaction and intersubjectivity, and their emotional content. Three types of belonging were identified: (a) restricted belonging, (b) dyadic stepmother–stepchild belonging and (c) the spousal relationship as a focal dyad of belonging. Attainment of belonging may be especially challenging for stepmothers owing to their dependence on the willingness of the biological mother and father to share the emotional dimension of the parent–…
