Antigen carbohydrate 125 in heart failure: Not just a surrogate for serosal effusions?

2011

Wehave readwith interest the letter CA-125andheart failure:Deja vu or “still to be seen” by Topatan B and Basaran A [1] where the authors concisely reviewed the current pathophysiological knowledgeof CA125 in heart failure (HF). As discussed by these authors, the pathogenesis of this biomarker's elevation inHF is complex andmultifactorial, with apparently different driven forces. For instances, a proinflammatory stimulus (IL-1, tumour necrosis factor-α, lipopolysaccharide) and mesothelial-induced stress appear thekeymechanisms related to the increaseof this biomarker in HF [1–5]. However, no clear evidence exists in regard to how these two mechanisms differentially participate in CA-125 elev…

Quality of Life in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis: Clinical and Psychological Changes with Age and Duration of Treatment

2011

For nephrologists, the theme of the quality of life (QoL) of patients on dialysis, in relation to physical and psychological parameters, is of great interest. We examine the importance of psychological variable-related factors of age and duration of treatment. We studied the quality of life of 56 subjects on peritoneal dialysis prospectively at time 0 and time 1 (after six months). Patients were divided into four age groups and some clinical parameters were registered. We used three specific tests for psychological assessment. Our study suggests that peritoneal dialysis patients have a significantly worse quality of life, especially according to physical parameters, and this also considera…

What influence patients'choice for peritoneal dialysis? a qualitative study

2018

Importance of Residual Renal Function in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis: Its Influence on Different Parameters of Renal Replacement Treatm…

1999

<i>Objective:</i> To study the influence of residual renal function (RRF) on different parameters of the renal substitutive treatment offered by peritoneal dialysis. <i>Methods:</i> We analyzed the impact of RRF on dialysis dose, nutrition parameters, anemia and phosphocalcic metabolism in 37 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treated by continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Analytical controls were done every 6 months after an initial assessment at the end of the first month of treatment. Multiple lineal regression models were used as the statistical method to analyze the influence of RRF on different theoretically dependent factors. RRF was ca…

Complex technological and biological research of solutions for peritoneal dialysis

2018

Objective : The purpose of our work was to conduct technological, analytical, and biological investigations and stability studies of peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions containing glucose and sodium lactate in single-chamber containers. Methods : Different formulations of PD solutions were prepared and sterilized at a temperature of 121 °C during 15 m. UV-spectrophotometric determination was performed using purified water as a blank. The spectra of the solutions were run in the range of 220 to 400 nm for the identification of an absorption maximum (λ max ) and measuring the absorbance at 228-230 nm and λ max before and after heat sterilization. λ max of the most PD solutions after sterilizat…

Quality of life in Sicilian Patients on PD. Clinical and psychological changes with age and duration of treatment

2010

Objective: In relation to chronological and dialytic age, we have studied for 6 months the quality of life (QoL) of 56 stable subjects on peritoneal dialysis (PD), and also nutritional, immunological, and dialytic efficiency factors, com- pared to psychological tests. Methods: We divided the patients (pts) into 4 age groups: G1 (up to 49 years), G2 (50–59 years), G3 (60–69 years), G4 (over 70 years). Age-based dialysis in months (m) in 3 groups: 1–12 m, 13–36 m, 37– 90 m. Clinical parameters: nutritional, immunological, and dialytic efficiency values: albumin, Hb, WBC, ferritin, C3, C4, BMI, IgG, IgA, IgM, C-reactive pro- tein (CRP), CA125, Ca19-9, GFR, Kt/V, CCL, PTH.
