Acquired resistance triggered by elicitins in tobacco and other plants

Elicitins are a family of proteins excreted byPhytophthora spp. They exhibit high sequence homology but large net charge differences. They induce necrosis in tobacco plants which then become resistant to the tobacco pathogenPhytophthora parasitica var.nicotianae. In stem-treated plants, resistance was not restricted to the site of elicitin application, but could be demonstrated by petiole inoculation at all levels on the stem. Resistance was already maximum after two days and lasted for at least two weeks. The studies on the embryonal development of Angiosperms are essentially descriptive and some quantitative data are only available at the present time. Within Dicotyledons, one must mentioned the works of Rietsema and al. (1955) on the growth of ovules and embryos of Datura stramonium, the interesting comparison between the growth of Capsella and Gossypium embryos effected by Pollock and Jensen (1964), the studies of Simoncioli (1974) and Tykarska (1980) on two Brassicaceae, respectively Diplotaxis erucoides and Brassica napus, and the work of Gray and al. (1984) on the embryo development of Daucus carota.

Root pathogens play an important economical role in the production of vegetable and ornamental plants. They cause high losses especially in green house production and are difficult to combat by conventional methods, because the use of pesticides in soils or substrates is limited. The application of arbuscular mycorrhiza could be an alternative as mycorrhizal plants generally showed higher resistance against various soil-borne pathogenic fungi.
