Immunotherapeutic approaches to inflammatory bowel diseases

2001

For a long time corticosteroids, aminosalicylic acid preparations and antibiotics have represented the principal approaches in evidence-based drug therapy for chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), e.g., Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), and are able to suppress disease activity in most cases. However, there are cases that do not respond to conventional drug therapy or remain dependent on high doses of steroids associated with severe side effects in the long run. It is generally accepted now that IBD has an immunological basis and results from a hyperresponsive state of the intestinal immune system. Although the primary etiological defect respectively immunogenic agent s…

Dexlansoprazole Delayed Release: Pharmacotherapy of Erosive Esophagitis and GERD

2011

Dexlansoprazole MR is a modified release formulation of the R-enantiomer of lansoprazole, which employs a novel Dual Delayed Release (DDR) technology. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown that the DDR technology provides a two peaks drug release, accuring 1–2 hours and 4–5 hours after dosing, leading to an extended duration of therapeutic plasma drug concentrations compared with conventional delayed release lansoprazole. Dexlansoprazole MR 30 and 60 mg provided superior intragastric pH control compared to that obtained with lansoprazole 15 mg and 30 mg once daily dosing. Dexlansoprazole can be taken without regard to food. The drug has been shown to be as efficacious as lansoprazole in heali…

Modelo predictivo preliminar para la identificación de pacientes con oportunidades de mejora farmacoterapéutica

2010

Objective: To develop a prediction model for identifying patients with the possibility of improving pharmacotherapy during the process of pharmaceutical validation of the prescription. Method: Cross-sectional study over two months, performed in the Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease divisions. Detecting opportunities for improving quality of pharmaco¬therapy is done by means of a pharmacist's validation of the prescription. Based on the information we obtained through this process, we performed a multivariate logistic regression analysis using as prognostic factors the demographic, pharmacotherapy and clinical variables related to identifying any drug-related problems (DRPs) in the pa…

Calidad de la farmacoterapia y seguridad de los pacientes en hemodiálisis tratados con estimulantes eritropoyéticos

2008

Objective: To assess an interdisciplinary programme for the improvement of pharmacotherapy quality and patient safety in patients with chronic renal disease who are treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Method: Observational, longitudinal study. Retrospective analysis (period A) and prospective analysis (period B) following implementation of the programme for haemoglobin values and monthly erythropoiesis- stimulating agent dosage. The proportion of patients with haemoglobin values within the target range (10-5-12.5 g/dl) and those with values above the safety limit (≥ 12.5g/dl) were compared every four months and the average percentage of time with haemoglobin values within the ta…

Mitochondrial Toxicity in HAART: An Overview of In Vitro Evidence

2011

The combined antiretroviral therapeutic approach currently employed for the treatment of HIV infection, known as Higly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), has dramatically reduced AIDS-related morbidity and mortality. However, the adverse reactions associated with the long term use of this therapy have now become a major issue and researchers have focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms underlying these drug-induced detrimental effects which englobe a large list of different events including rash and hypersensibility reactions, hepatotoxicity, metabolic disturbances including lipodystrophy, and other metabolic syndrome-like disturbances such as hyperlactatemia, hyperlipedimia, i…

Premature Ejaculation: Comparison of treatment. Pharmacotherapy vs Pharmacotherapy in association with group psychotherapy vs group psychotherapy

2015

Introduction & Objectives: The aim of our study was to compare and analyse the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment and the psychotherapy alone or in association in terms of increase of Quality of Life (QoL) measured through Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) and increase of intravaginal eiaculation latency time (IELT) in patients affected by primitive premature ejaculation(PE). Material & Methods: Between January and December 2012, in our department underwent to medical examination 540 patients complaining PE. Criteria for enrollment were primitive PE with IELT ≤ 2 minutes, PEDT > 9 and absence of psychiatric disease, severe chronic disease, drugs and alcool abuse. Out of 5…
