LOCAL-MOMENT AND ITINERANT ANTIFERROMAGNETISM IN THE HEAVY-FERMION SYSTEM CE(CU1-XNIX)2GE2

Elastic and inelastic neutron-scattering studies on the system Ce(Cu1−xNix)2Ge2 are reported. These measurements are complemented by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, heat capacity, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity and thermopower. The results reveal an interesting T-x phase diagram consisting of two different antiferromagnetic phases for x 0.5. Further experimental evidence for different types of antiferromagnetic ordering derives from a line-shape analysis of the quasielastic neutron-scattering intensity, from magnetization and thermopower experiments.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the stability of the monoclinicBaWO4-II phase at high pressure and high temperature

In this work we report high-pressure (HP) and high-temperature (HT) ex situ and in situ experiments in ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$. Starting from powder samples of ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$, scheelite structure $(I{4}_{1}/a)$, we reached conditions of 2.5--5.5 GPa and 400--1100 K using a Paris-Edinburgh press. The quenched samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements at ambient conditions. Depending upon the final $P\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$ conditions we found either the scheelite or the monoclinic ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$-II $(P{2}_{1}/n)$ structure. Melting and Freezing Lines for a Mixture of Charged Colloidal Spheres with Spindle-Type Phase Diagram

We have measured the phase behavior of a binary mixture of like-charged colloidal spheres with a size ratio of 0.9 and a charge ratio of 0.96 as a function of particle number density n and composition p. Under exhaustively deionized conditions the aqueous suspension forms solid solutions of body centered cubic structure for all compositions. The freezing and melting lines as a function of composition show opposite behavior and open a wide, spindle shaped coexistence region. Lacking more sophisticated treatments, we model the interaction in our mixtures as an effective one-component pair energy accounting for number weighted effective charge and screening constant. Elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering studies in KBr:KCN mixed crystals

Neutron scattering studies in (KBr)1–x(KCN)x mixed crystals are presented utilizing powder diffraction, single crystal diffraction and time-of-flight techniques. Forx>0.6 (KBr)1–x(KCN)x crystals exhibit ferroelastic and ferroelectric low-temperature phases. Crystals withx<0.6 undergo transitions into an orientational glass state. Here we present a detailed phase diagram including new results for x=0.85 and x=0.65. For the latter system a stable rhombohedral low-temperature phase has been detected where the orientational disorder of the plastic phase is only partly removed and quadrupolar relaxations between three body diagonals are still possible. Magnetoresistance and Phase Diagram of Thin-Film UNi2Al3

We study the dc resistivity of UNi2Al3 thin films as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We focus on the temperature range around the antiferromagnetic transition (TN \approx 4 K in zero applied field). From a clear signature of TN in the dc resistance along the crystallographic a-direction, we extract the shape of the magnetic phase diagram. Here we find quantitative differences in comparison to previous studies on bulk crystals.
Monte Carlo Simulations of Body Centered Cubic Alloys

We illustrate the use of Monte Carlo simulations in the study of order-disorder phenomena in metallic alloys by presenting detailed work on a fairly realistic lattice model for iron aluminum. The model has been constructed based on recent measurements of effective interaction parameters and includes a description of the magnetism of iron within a Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We show that it reproduces the bulk phase diagram in a qualitatively correct way. Then internal antiphase boundaries and free surfaces in the (100)-direction are studied. Temperature Dependence of Electronic and Magnetic Properties of (DOEO)<sub>4</sub>[HgBr<sub>4</sub>]·TCE Single Crystals

The temperature dependence of electronic and magnetic properties of the organic charge-transfer salt (DOEO)4[HgBr4]·TCE was investigated using magnetometry. The magnetic susceptibility shows a maximum at 40 K followed by an onset of a pronounced increase at 70 K and a constant behavior above 120 K. Implications on the charge carrier density are discussed. Combining the magnetometry with resistivity and ESR measurements we propose a sequence of insulating, metallic and semiconducting behavior with increasing temperature. Our results indicate that (DOEO)4[HgBr4]·TCE is close to the boundary between an insulating and conducting ground state.

Thermodynamic and neutron diffraction studies of the nucleation of solid4He on graphite

The nucleation of solid layers of4He on the surface of exfoliated graphite (Grafoil) was investigated by thermodynamic and neutron diffraction measurements. The thermodynamic measurements consisted of recording isopycnals in the vicinity of the melting curve. The isopycnals show a rounding in comparison to the bulk ones, which can be explained by a continuous solidification of4He on the surface of graphite in a layer-by-layer mode in the van der Waals field of the substrate. Moreover, we found a hysteresis behavior of the isopycnals, probably due to defect states in the solidified film.
