Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System associated with Hemophilia A: A case report

2021

Abstract Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System (SSCNS) is a condition secondary to the deposition of hemosiderin within the subpial layers of central nervous system leading to its progressive degeneration, clinically responsible for hearing impairment, cerebellar ataxia and pyramidal syndrome. Here we report the case of a 61-year-old man with medical history of congenital hemophilia A presenting with typical clinical features of SSCNS associated with extensive hypo-intensity on fast 2D gradient-echo-weighted sequences, along the spinal cord, posterior fossa's structures and cerebral cortex. Interestingly, although his disorder was revealed by a lumbar spinal stenosis, presurgi…

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma associated consecutively with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and hypereosinophilic syndrome

2003

:  Both hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and hypereosinophilic syndrome have been associated with hematologic neoplasms and are respectively related to an overproduction of the cytokines Thelper 1 (Th1) and Th2 by tumor cells or reactive cells. To our knowledge, this is the first time a case of a peripheral T-cell lymphoma consecutively associated with both paraneoplastic conditions has been reported. Importantly, in this case when the lymphoma exclusively involved the bone marrow, severe paraneoplastic systemic damage, a CD8+ suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype and a hypereosinophilia not related to high levels of interleukin (IL)-5 was found. Interestingly, progression of the lymphoma coinci…

Direct and indirect affection of the central nervous system by Fasciola infection

2013

Fascioliasis is a worldwide, zoonotic disease caused by the liver trematodes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. Neurological fascioliasis has been widely reported in all continents, affecting both sexes and all ages. Two types of records related to two physiopathogenic mechanisms may be distinguished: cases in which the neurological symptoms are due to direct effects of a migrating juvenile present in the brain or neighboring organ and with cerebral lesions suggesting migration through the brain; and cases with neurological symptoms due to indirect immuno-allergic and toxic effects at distance from flukes in the liver. Neurological manifestations include minor symptoms, mainly cephal…

Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis in children: proposal of an experience-based treatment flowchart

2018

Purpose: To describe the prevalent clinical, laboratory, and radiological features of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) in children; to identify clinical predictors of outcome; to propose a management algorithm derived from experience. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of the clinical records of patients with OLST, treated in a single tertiary care referral center for pediatric disease from 2006 to 2017. The inclusion criteria were pediatric age (0–16 years) and OLST diagnosis confirmed by a pre- and post-contrast CT or venography–MRI scan. Primary outcome measures were early (1–2 months) and late (6 months) sinus recanalization assessed by means of neuroimaging. Results:…

Neurological and Ocular Fascioliasis in Humans

2014

Fascioliasis is a food-borne parasitic disease caused by the trematode species Fasciola hepatica, distributed worldwide, and Fasciola gigantica, restricted to given regions of Africa and Asia. This disease in humans shows an increasing importance, which relies on its recent widespread emergence related to climate and global changes and also on its pathogenicity in the invasive, biliary, and advanced chronic phases in the human endemic areas, mainly of developing countries. In spite of the large neurological affection capacity of Fasciola, this important pathogenic aspect of the disease has been pronouncedly overlooked in the past decades and has not even appear within the numerous reviews o…

Benefits of Ehl Factor VIII Replacement Therapy in Hemophilia: Observations on Coverage, Physical Activity and Phisiotherapy

2019

Introduction: Prevention of haemophilic arthropathy and quality of life´s (QoL) improvement are still the main goals in the haemophilia community. Haemophilic arthropathy is the result of clinical and subclinical bleeding during everyday activities and/or traumatic situations. Prophylaxis with extended half-life (EHL) factor replacement therapy is understood as an improvement solution for factor VIII (FVIII) PK properties, as half-life (T1/2) and area under the curve (AUC), however few real world data are yet available. EHL improved pharmacokinetic (PK) properties might directly drive into a reduction of the bleeding risk during physical activity (both therapeutical or leisure) for a longer…

Helicobacter pyloriinfection and nonmalignant diseases

2017

A substantial decrease in Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease has been observed during the last decades. Drug-related ulcers as well as idiopathic ulcers are becoming predominant and are more refractory to treatment; however, H. pylori infection still plays an important role in ulcer bleeding and recurrence after therapy. The effect of H. pylori eradication upon functional dyspepsia symptoms has been reviewed in this article and generally confirms the results of previous meta-analyses. Additional evidence suggests a lack of impact upon the quality of life, in spite of improvement in symptoms. The association of H. pylori with gastroesophageal reflux disease and Barrett's eso…

Hygienic characteristics of radishes grown in soil contaminated with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

2015

Background: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a plant growth-promoter. This bacterium is also implicated in human diseases. Thus, after the use of this bacterium in agriculture, the safety of the final products has to be verified. Due to the ubiquitous presence of S. maltophilia in soil, in this study a massive contamination was simulated to evaluate the growth and safety of Raphanus sativus L.. Results: Different inoculums and soil treatment conditions were tested. Soils were analysed weekly and the radishes at harvest for their microbial loads and presence/persistence of S. maltophilia LMG 6606. The concentration of the bacterium added in the different trials decreased during the first week…
