Introduction to Part V

2018

The shock of defeat at the end of the First World War left many German academics dumbfounded and numb. Even Hilbert, an outspoken internationalist, was deeply disillusioned by the chaos and instability that plagued the early Weimar years. Already during the war, political differences widened the gulf that had already formed within the Gottingen Philosophical Faculty, whose conservative members felt they were constantly being provoked by the “Hilbert faction.” The controversy over Emmy Noether’s candidacy to habilitate in 1915, mentioned in the introduction to Part IV, was only one of many such instances. Others were even more serious, as when Hilbert and his pacifist friends were accused of…

Technology-Enhanced Course in English Theoretical Grammar and Phonetics at the Tertiary Level

2021

The advancement of technologies and the recently forced lockdown by Covid-19 are bringing changes to the organisation of the learning process by accelerating the introduction of e-learning to create a learner-centred technology-based approach to English studies, thus stepping towards digital humanities. These trends initiated the institutional project Mobile and Desktop Software Integration in Bachelor and Master Study Programmes. The present study, using a questionnaire, elicits university students’ attitudes to the mobile applications and speech analysis software-based seminar activities in Moodle e-course in accordance with the blended learning model selected for the studies of theoretic…

Grammatical changes caused by contact between Livonian and Latvian

2014

The article provides insight into the process of various grammatical changes in Livonian and Latvian that have taken place as a result of prolonged contact between the languages. Livonian is strongly influenced by Latvian at different levels due to the close contact between the speakers of two languages; it is necessary to note that speakers of Livonian were bilinguals for a long time. It is clear that Livonian has affected Latvian in a similar way. The process of mutual borrowings can be observed most clearly in the vocabulary, especially in dialects; however, there are changes that have occurred in the phonetics and grammar as well. Different changes can be found as a result of mutual inf…

Reconsidering authorship in the Ciceronian corpus through computational authorship attribution

2019

In recent years, methods of computational authorship attribution have offered promising results for the reattribution of classical texts. We use and further develop these methods to verify the authorship of several texts belonging or related to the Ciceronian corpus: Rhetorica ad C. Herennium, De inventione, De optimo genere oratorum, and Commentariolum petitionis. We use two classifiers, Support Vector Machine and Convolutional Neural Network, of which the latter is more accurate except in regard to certain aspects of vocabulary. The most important of our results is that Commentariolum petitionis seems to be authored by Marcus Cicero, not by his brother Quintus. Negli ultimi anni metodi co…

Sulla nuova edizione critica del Canzoniere di Guidotto Prestinari

2021

This note refers to the recent publication of the critical edition of the Canzoniere by Guidotto Prestinari, a fifteenth-sixteenth-century poet from Bergamo, prepared by Marco Robecchi. This is an excellent edition, which fits well into the current panorama of studies on “minor” Italian poetry between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Renewable Energy Sources in the Baltic States and New Business Approach of the Sector

2021

Renewable energy sources (RES) are efficient in meeting the demand for clean and affordable energy. The need for RES is undeniable and has many advantages but there are also some challenges that need to be taken into consideration and adapted to the energy system. One of the challenges is RES volatility and its impact on electricity prices and power system operation. Europe is trending to power system decentralisation through the involvement of local authorities, active consumers and citizens in the system operation. This article provides main information about the energy sector of Latvia and RES in the Baltic countries. It proposes a methodology for the complex analysis of correlation and …

On the relation between present and future tense in Lithuanian: Preliminary considerations in the domain of non-deictic tense use

2021

The article examines non-deictic uses of present and future tense in Lithuanian. Narrative use, in which reference intervals match with singular events, is distinguished from suspended propositions characterized by lack of such reference intervals (habitual, dispositional and circumstantial modal, and conditional meanings). Present tense is frequently involved in both usage domains, while the future is rare in narrative use, but overlaps with present tense in certain types of suspended propositions. Moreover, its temporal-deictic use is inherently associated with suspended propositions and “linked” to them via epistemic implicatures. This, in contrast to the present, makes the future more l…

Contemporary hermeneutics and the role of the self in translation

2009
