Fungi related to larvae of red palm weevil Rhynchophorous ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

2010

As a first step to developing effective biocontrol strategies, we analyzed the pathogens and mainly the entomopathogenic fungal species, present into dead larvae of Rhynchophorous ferrugineus; a quarantine pest recently introduced and acclimated in Sicily (Italy). From 2008 to 2010, we estimated the natural larval mortality (> second instar) of R. ferrugineus collected from infested palm Phoenix canariensis; that was variable from 10 to 35%, according to the different seasons Among the different pathogens recorded the fungi seems have an important role, than in order to distinguish saprophytic or opportunistic species from potential pathogens (including the non cultivable ones) we applied d…

Impoverishment of Sicilian (Italy) historical and cultural assets by an alien insect species:the case study of the Real Palm Weevil

2012

Microorganisms and insects have a disastrous impact on the biodiversity, cultural heritage and economy of a geographic area. However, in recent decades, the negative effects of invasive alien species (IAS), including both animal and plant or microorganisms occurring outside their natural distribution range, are generally not well known. Invasive alien species are most often found in or near urban areas, as well as throughout the settled landscape. According to the World Conservation Union, IUCN 2012, IAS represent the second most significant threat to biodiversity after resource depletion of habitats, becoming predators, competitors, parasites, hybridizers and diseases for native plants and…

The species Phoenix excelsior Cav., its typification and diversity of complex Ph. dactylifera L. (Arecaceae)

2019

The diversity and nomenclature within the Phoenix dactylifera complex is analyzed and discussed, assessing the importance of Phoenix excelsior Cav. for the characterization of the western group of date palms whose most defined core is the Spanish date palm. In the absence of holotype and original material of Ph. excelsior a n…

First Report of Bud Rot of Canary Island Date Palm Caused by Phytophthora palmivora in Italy.

2007

Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis hort. ex Chabaud) is planted as an ornamental in Mediterranean climatic regions of the world. From 2004 to 2006, withering of the spear leaf was observed on screenhouse-grown potted plants of this palm in Sicily (Italy). The first symptom was a dark brown rot that extended from the petiole base of the spear to the adjacent youngest leaves and killed the bud. Dissection of plants revealed a foul-smelling internal rot. After the bud died, external older leaves remained green for months. As much as 10% of plants in a single nursery were affected. A Phytophthora species was consistently isolated from symptomatic plants on BNPRAH selective medium (4)…

Saint Agnes of Rome, the Pope and the “Purpuresque Pavo”: Memory Issues of the Apse Mosaic of Santa Agnese fuori le mura (625-638)

2018

The theme of memory is at the heart of apse mosaic of Santa Agnese fuori le mura. It’s a visual discourse about a roman martyr linked to the founder of new basilica and the “purpuresque pavo”. With the offering of this mosaics, the pope Honorius honours Saint Agnes’s memory. Honorius reaches to blend in a complex system of commemoration. Some close links are forged between the pope and the roman martyr. A true locus memoriae was established on the Via Nomentana since the middle of the IVth century. In the dedicatory inscription, the “purpuresque pavo” reminds the sacrifice of Christ, the martyrdom of Saint Agnes and the resurrection of the Elect. Thus, Honorius left an indelible mark in Rom…

Effect of NaOH Treatment on Properties of Phoenix Sp. Fiber

2016

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of an alkali treatment on physical, chemical, mechanical, and morphological properties of Phoenix Sp. fibers. The use of natural fibers as reinforcement in polymer composites requires a deep investigation to understand their behavior and which treatment is more appropriate to improve the quality of the untreated material. For this reason, fibers were extracted from the petioles of the Phoenix Sp. plant and they were treated with NaOH solution in different weight concentrations (5%, 10%, and 15%). The mechanical behavior was investigated through tensile test on single fiber at different gauge length (20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, and 60 mm). C…
