Functionalized phosphonates as building units for multi-dimensional homo- and heterometallic 3d-4f inorganic-organic hybrid-materials.
2016
Using the multifunctional ligand H4L (2,2'-bipyridinyl-5,5'-diphosphonic acid), a new family of inorganic-organic hybrid-materials was prepared. The ligand shows a very high flexibility regarding the coordination mode, leading to a large structural diversity. The compounds 1a, 1b ([M(H2L)(H2O)4]·2.5H2O; M = Co(2+) (a), Ni(2+) (b)), 2 ([Gd2(H2H'L)2(H2H'2L)(H2O)6]Cl4·14H2O), 3a, 3b, 3c ([MCo(iii)(H2L)3(H2O)2]·6.5H2O; M = Gd(3+) (a), Dy(3+) (b) and Tb(3+) (c)), and 4 ([GdNi(ii)(H2L)3(H2O)3]NaCl·6H2O) were isolated and characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction. Depending on the used metal ions and on the stoichiometry, either discrete entities (0D), extended 2D layers or 3D frameworks…

The title compound, C32H48O8P2S2, was prepared by the nickel-catalyzed reaction of bis(5-bromothienyl)dipropoxybenzene and triisopropyl phosphite. The thiophene rings are inclined to the benzene ring by 14.6 (2) and 25.3 (3)°. One propyloxy group is disordered. Four hydrogen bonds connect the molecules, which are arranged in ribbons parallel to thebcplane.
The aminophosphonate glyphosine enhances phycobiliprotein yields from selected cyanobacterial cultures
2017
Among added-value products obtained from cyanobacterial cultures are phycobiliproteins, photosynthetic pigments that have found an increasing number of applications as natural dyes for food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and antioxidants. To obtain sustainable production, we aimed at maximizing phycobilin yield through the increase of either the final biomass or the specific content of these pigments by varying culture parameters, such as chemical composition and pH of the medium or quality and intensity of the light. Here, we report that the addition to the culture medium of millimolar or submillimolar concentrations of the aminophosphonate glyphosine [(N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine], form…
Extensive osteonecrosis of the maxilla caused by bisphosphonates: Report of a rare case
2019
Bisphosphonates are drugs indicated for the treatment of bone metabolic diseases or malignant hypercalcemia. They are generally well-tolerated drugs, however, recent reports have described osteonecrosis of the jaw bones as a potentially serious complication related to the long-term use of these drugs. We report a case of severe osteonecrosis in a 52-years-old white woman that was taking bisphosphonates (zoledronic acid and alendronate) for the management of osteoporosis. Following a long exposure to these drugs and after being subjected to multiples exodontias, developed bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw compromising the whole maxilla and that extended toward the base of skull…

Amorphous, Smart, and Bioinspired Polyphosphate Nano/Microparticles: A Biomaterial for Regeneration and Repair of Osteo-Articular Impairments In-Situ
2018
Using femur explants from mice as an in vitro model, we investigated the effect of the physiological polymer, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), on differentiation of the cells of the bone marrow in their natural microenvironment into the osteogenic and chondrogenic lineages. In the form of amorphous Ca-polyP nano/microparticles, polyP retains its function to act as both an intra- and extracellular metabolic fuel and a stimulus eliciting morphogenetic signals. The method for synthesis of the nano/microparticles with the polyanionic polyP also allowed the fabrication of hybrid particles with the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid, a drug used in therapy of bone metastases in cancer patients. The r…
Glyphosate dose modulates the uptake of inorganic phosphate by freshwater cyanobacteria
2017
The usefulness of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] as a source of nutritive phosphorus for species of halophilic cyanobacteria has been postulated for years. Our results indicate a stimulating effect of glyphosate on the growth of four out of five examined freshwater species, Anabaena variabilis (CCALA 007), Chroococcus minutus (CCALA 055), Fischerella cf. maior (CCALA 067) and Nostoc cf. muscorum (CCALA 129), in a manner dependent on the applied concentration. The most significant stimulation was observed at a dose of 0.1 mM glyphosate. The decrease in the amount of phosphonate, which correlated with microbial growth, demonstrated that glyphosate may play an important role in cyanob…
Biodegradation of the aminopolyphosphonate DTPMP by the cyanobacteriumAnabaena variabilisproceeds via a C-P lyase-independent pathway
2017
Cyanobacteria, the only prokaryotes capable of oxygenic photosynthesis, play a major role in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus global cycling. Under conditions of increased P availability and nutrient loading, some cyanobacteria are capable of blooming, rapidly multiplying and possibly altering the ecological structure of the ecosystem. Because of their ability of using non-conventional P sources, these microalgae can be used for bioremediation purposes. Under this perspective, the metabolization of the polyphosphonate diethylenetriaminepenta(methylenephosphonic) acid (DTPMP) by the strain CCALA 007 of Anabaena variabilis was investigated using 31 P NMR analysis. Results showed a quantitative…
Bisphosphonates, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and osteonecrosis of the jaw. Could there be a missing link?
2016
It is estimated that over 190 million bisphosphonates have been prescribed worldwide. But this drug can produce adverse effects, of which osteonecrosis of the jaw and severe hypocalcemia are the most serious. It is evident that bisphosphonate administration affects multiple and diverse biochemical mediators related to bone metabolism. This review of literature investigates four basic parameters in patients treated with bisphosphonates - parathyroid hormone (PTH), bisphosphonates, vitamin D, calcium, and jaw osteonecrosis - which are fundamental for assessing bone metabolism and so the efficacy and correct use of the drug. The imbalances generated by vitamin D and calcium deficiencies, toget…
Analytical insight into degradation processes of aminopolyphosphonates as potential factors that induce cyanobacterial blooms
2017
Aminopolyphosphonates (AAPs) are commonly used industrial complexones of metal ions, which upon the action of biotic and abiotic factors undergo a breakdown and release their substructures. Despite the low toxicity of AAPs towards vertebrates, products of their transformations, especially those that contain phosphorus and nitrogen, can affect algal communities. To verify whether such chemical entities are present in water ecosystems, much effort has been made in developing fast, inexpensive, and reliable methods for analyzing phosphonates. However, unfortunately, the methods described thus far require time-consuming sample pretreatment and offer relatively high values of the limit of detect…
