Customized WO3 nanoplatelets as visible-light photoelectrocatalyst for the degradation of a recalcitrant model organic compound (methyl orange)
2018
[EN] WO3 nanoplatelets have been synthesized by electrochemical anodization in acidic electrolytes containing two different complexing agents: fluorides and hydrogen peroxide. The influence of the morphology and size of these nanoplatelets on their photoelectrocatalytic performance has been studied following the degradation of a model organic recalcitrant compound, such as methyl orange (MO). The effect of several supporting electrolytes on this photodegradation process has also been checked. The best MO decoloration was observed for nanoplatelets fabricated in the presence of low H2O2 concentrations, whose distribution and small size made them expose a very high surface area to the problem…
Improvement in photocatalytic activity of stable WO3 nanoplatelet globular clusters arranged in a tree-like fashion: Influence of rotation velocity d…
2016
This study investigates the influence of controlled hydrodynamic conditions during anodization of tungsten (W) on the morphological, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of a novel WO3 nanostructure: globular clusters of nanoplatelets associated in a tree-like fashion. For this purpose different techniques such as Field-Emission Scanning Electronic Microscopy (FE-SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, Mott-Schottky (M-S) analysis and photoelectrochemical water splitting tests have been carried out. Photoanodes obtained at 375 rpm showed the best photoresponse, much higher than that of conventional WO3 nanoplatelets, which can be ascribed to a noteworthy in…
Preparation and photoactivity of nanostructured TiO2 particles obtained by hydrolysis of TiCl4
2005
This work reports the preparation of nanostructured polycrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts obtained by hydrolysis of TiCl4 in very mild conditions. Several samples were prepared as suspensions or colloidal dispersions by using TiCl4/H2O volume ratios ranging between 1:1 and 1:100. The samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis, specific surface area determination, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. 4-Nitrophenol photodegradation was used as probe reaction to test the photoactivity of the catalysts. Some samples revealed a photoactivity higher than that of Degussa P25 in similar experimental conditions and the most photoactive one was that prepared …

Photodegradation of selected phthalates on mural painting surfaces under UV light irradiation
2014
Abstract The esters of phthalic acid are considered as hazardous pollutants due to their mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and are also classified as endocrine disruptor chemicals. Several compounds of this class of substances for decades, and probably even now, were used as softeners in water-based synthetic paintings. Surfaces and structures, such as house walls painted with phthalates based paintings, can be a concern to construction workers engaged in demolition, restore and paint removal activities if they are not protected from hazardous dust inhalation. In this paper we report the results of an investigation about phthalate ester degradation by direct UV irradiation at 254 nm. The result…
Photocatalytic Degradation of Paraquat and Genotoxicity of its Intermediate Products
2007
Abstract The photocatalytic degradation of paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridylium dichloride) aqueous solutions in the presence of polycrystalline TiO2 Degussa P25 irradiated by near-UV light was investigated. The substrate and total organic carbon concentrations were monitored by UV spectroscopy and TOC measurements, respectively: the complete photocatalytic mineralization of paraquat (20 ppm) was achieved after ca. 3 h of irradiation by using 0.4 g l−1 of catalyst amount at natural pH (ca 5.8). On the contrary no significant photodegradation of paraquat was observed in the absence of TiO2 under similar experimental conditions. To evaluate the genotoxicity of paraquat and its intermediat…
Preparation of N-doped TiO2: characterization and photocatalytic performance under UV and visibile light
2009
Nanocrystalline N-doped TiO(2) samples were prepared by using TiCl(4) or TiOSO(4) as precursors. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was tested using the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and visible light. Some samples were more active than commercial Degussa P25. A shift of the absorption edge to a lower energy and a stronger absorption in the visible light region were observed in the samples obtained from TiCl(4). Two absorption edges were observed in the samples derived from T…
Enhanced chemiluminescent determination of chloramphenicol and related nitro compounds by ‘on-line’ photochemical reaction
2000
The viability of tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection was studied for a heterogeneous family of nitro compounds using chloramphenicol as a test substance. The 'on-line' chemical photodegradation of chloramphenicol was performed in a flow injection assembly by using a photoreactor consisting of a 725 cm x 0.5 mm id piece of PTFE tubing coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded chloramphenicol was detected by oxidizing photo-fragments from the parent compound and their subsequent reaction with a luminol-Co(II) system. The calibration graph was linear up to 3 x 10(-5) mol l-1 chloramphenicol, the limit of detection was 3 x 10(-9) mol l-1, the relative s…
