Photocatalytic Membrane Reactors in Water Purification

2004

Potable water, industrial water, and wastewater are often polluted by toxic organic species. New methods, such as those involving heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions, allow in many cases a complete degradation of organic pollutants to small and non-noxious species, without using chemicals, avoiding sludge production and its disposal. When combined with membrane separation processes, photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) are obtained. These have some advantages compared to conventional photoreactors. Indeed, confining of the photocatalyst in the reaction environment as a result of the presence of the membrane (separation at molecular level) enables operation with high amounts of catalys…

Photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in aqueous systems by transition metal doped polycrystalline TiO2

2002

Abstract Some probe catalytic photooxidation reactions with aliphatic and aromatic organic compounds having different acid strengths, i.e. methanoic acid, ethanoic acid, benzoic acid and 4-nitrophenol, were carried out in aqueous systems by using polycrystalline TiO2 powders doped with various transition metal ions (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo, V and W). The Co-doped powder showed to be more photoactive than the bare TiO2 for methanoic acid degradation while the behaviour of TiO2/Cu and TiO2/Fe was similar to that of the support. TiO2/W was the most efficient sample for the photodegradation of benzoic acid and 4-nitrophenol, TiO2 the most active powder for ethanoic acid. A tentative explanation is p…

Enhanced flow-injection–chemiluminometric determination of sulphonamides by on-line photochemical reaction

2003

Abstract The viability of the tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection has been studied for an heterogeneous group of sulphonamides (sulphamethoxazole, sulphadiazine, sulphamerazine, sulphamethoxypyridazine, sulphacetamide, sulphadimidine, sulphanilamide, sulphathiazole and sulphaguanidine) using sulphamethoxazole (whose chemiluminescent behaviour has not been previously reported) as a test substance. The ‘on-line’ photochemical-reaction of sulphonamides provides an enhancing influence on the chemiluminometric response of the drugs during their oxidation by potassium permanganate in sulphuric acid medium (sulphamethoxazole, sulphacetamide, sulphadimidine and sulphanilamide …

Photo-induced chemiluminescence-based determination of diphenamid by using a multicommuted flow system

2007

This manuscript deals with the application of molecular connectivity calculations to predict the photo-induced chemiluminescent behaviour of the family of herbicides grouped as amides. Several compounds of this group were theoretically studied by means of a general discriminant equation formerly obtained, being 18 of them (plus eight from the chloroacetanilide sub-group) predicted with a high probability as photo-induced chemiluminescent. Empirical confirmation of the chemiluminometric behaviour was performed with some few commercially available amide herbicides. On the basis of these results, a new multicommutation-photo-chemiluminescent method is proposed for the determination of the diph…

Surface characterisation of metal ions loaded TiO2 photocatalysts: structure–activity relationship

2004

Abstract Transition metal loaded TiO 2 powders were characterised and tested for the photodegradation of some organic acids. Both Lewis and Bronsted surface acid sites were present in the samples containing large amounts of Mo, V and W. The Bronsted sites are associated to the presence of the transition metals as they do not exist in the unloaded support, and in particular to the presence of these metals in high oxidation states. The trend of the pzc values of the various powders matches rather well both with the surface acidity of the samples experimentally determined by NH 3 adsorption and with a scale of acidity/basicity for bulk binary oxides. XPS investigation indicates that only the p…

Surface properties of iron-titania photocatalysts employed for 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in aqueous TiO2 dispersion

1994

Iron(III) doped specimens (0.01–5% atomic Fe ∶ Ti) have been prepared by impregnating polycrystalline “home prepared” TiO2 (mainly anatase) and have been studied for photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous dispersions. Some structural and surface properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area and porosity measurements and FTIR monitoring of pyridine, ammonia and methanoic acid adsorption for surface acidity and basicity. Their surface properties were compared with a corresponding series of photocatalysts prepared by a coprecipitation method. Adsorption of pyridine and ammonia indicates the presence of surface acid Lewis sites, a low concentration of …

Interactions of amino acids with aluminum octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide. Experimental and DFT studies

2017

The influence of albumin and amino acids (l-serine, glycine, l-histidine, l-tryptophan, l-cysteine) on the properties of aluminum octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide (Al(OH)PcOC) was investigated in a phosphate buffer (pH 8.0). Particular attention was paid to the spectroscopic properties and photostability of Al(OH)PcOC. The effect of albumin or amino acids on the photodegradation of Al(OH)PcOC was examined in water using red light: 685 nm and daylight irradiation. Analysis of kinetic curves indicated that interaction with those molecules increases the photostability of Al(OH)PcOC. The molecular structure of Al(OH)PcOC complexes (in vacuum and in water) with axially or equatorially coordin…

Preparation of N-doped TiO2: characterization and photocatalytic performance under UV and visibile light

2009

Nanocrystalline N-doped TiO(2) samples were prepared by using TiCl(4) or TiOSO(4) as precursors. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was tested using the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and visible light. Some samples were more active than commercial Degussa P25. A shift of the absorption edge to a lower energy and a stronger absorption in the visible light region were observed in the samples obtained from TiCl(4). Two absorption edges were observed in the samples derived from T…

Taking advantage of the functional synergism between carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets to obtain polypropylene-based nanocomposites with en…

2020

Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNP) were incorporated in Polypropylene (PP) as single filler (CNT=1, 2 and 4 %wt. and GNP=2, 4, and 6 %wt.) and in hybrid form (CNT:GNP weight ratio 2:2, 2:4 and 4:2) using a prototype miniature Twin Screw Extruder (TSE) coupled with a double slit rheological die, in order to assess in-line the extent of nanofiller dispersion and to deliver PP-based nanocomposites with enhanced thermo-oxidative stability. The morphological, electrical and mechanical properties, as well as the resistance to thermal and photo degradation of the composites containing single nanofillers (PP/CNT and PP/GNP) were compared with those of hybrid PP based nanocompos…
