Photonic waveform generator by linear shaping of four spectral sidebands

2015

International audience; Changing the optical phase difference between four spectral sidebands is sufficient to synthesize various pulse shapes. Experiments at 40 GHz confirm that high quality parabolic, triangular or flat-top temporal intensity profiles can be achieved.

Diffractive optics for processing ultrashort light pulses

2011

In this work we combine, in principle, two disjoint optical fields, diffractive optics and ultrashort light radiation. This combination allows us to manipulate in a very unconventional manner femtosecond pulses and, on the other hand, to implement a set of novel applications. In our case we have focused our attention on material processing and biophotonics applications.

Spatial Solitons in Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Fibers

2017

This chapter aims to review the most relevant results on solitons in nonlinear solid-core photonic crystal fibers since their introduction about fifteen years ago. These include fundamental solitons and vortices, as well as vector systems of two fundamental, vortex or mixed components. Also other related systems as solitons in double-core photonic crystal fibers will be reviewed. The presentation will describe the mode families as well as their stability properties. The work is intended to be a comprehensive document on the field and provide a fast update to the reader as well as the necessary sources for a further detailed documentation.

Unconventional, efficient and flexible bifocal lens design by metalens and AFA beam combination

2019

In the field of metasurface-based light focusing, both convex metalenses with parabolic phase profile and autofocused Airy (AFA) beams play essential roles. AFA beam generation as a combination of two convergent mirrored Airy beams leaves the space between the two launched Airy profiles inefficient with zero amplitude transmission and constant phase distribution. In this paper, we propose using this inutile space as an independent metalens. We show that coincidence of the focal spot of the metalens to that of the AFA beam will increase the focusing intensity more than 24 percent at its focal point. It is shown that using the nonoperative space between the two launched Airy beams as an indep…

Dispersion-managed electrical transmission lines

2009

International audience; We examine the ability of electrical pulses to execute a highly stable propagation in a special electrical network made of concatenated pieces of discrete electrical lines with alternately positive and negative signs of the second-order dispersion. We show that such networks, called dispersion-managed electrical lines, induce a pulse breathing phenomenon, that is a dynamical behaviour with alternate regimes of pulse broadening and compression. This breathing phenomenon, which prevents the pulse from broadening without bounds during propagation in the network is the most appealing feature of the technique of dispersion management developed in the last decade in the ar…

Optical hysteresis in a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator

2007

International audience; High contrast optical bistability is found experimentally in the pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two counterpropagating pump waves. The data are in qualitative agreement with the results of calculation.

Spatial hole burning in thin-disk lasers and twisted-mode operation.

2018

Spatial hole burning prevents single-frequency operation of thin-disk lasers when the thin disk is used as a folding mirror. We present an evaluation of the saturation effects in the disk for disks acting as end-mirrors and as folding-mirrors explaining one of the main obstacles towards single-frequency operation. It is shown that a twisted-mode scheme based on a multi-order quarter-wave plate combined with a polarizer provides an almost complete suppression of spatial hole burning and creates an additional wavelength selectivity that enforces efficient single-frequency operation.

Statistical characterization of the internal structure of noiselike pulses using a nonlinear optical loop mirror

2016

Abstract In this work we study statistically the internal structure of noiselike pulses generated by a passively mode-locked fiber laser. For this purpose, we use a technique that allows estimating the distribution of the amplitudes of the sub-pulses in the bunch. The technique takes advantage of the fast response of the optical Kerr effect in a fiber nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). It requires the measurement of the energy transfer characteristic of the pulses through the NOLM, and the numerical resolution of a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The results yield a strongly asymmetric distribution, with a high-amplitude tail that is compatible with the existence of extreme-inte…

Passive optical resonator for OSQAR LSW experiment

2016

This paper treats the issue of locking a solid state laser, pumped by high power diodes (Verdi V5), to a twenty meter long optical resonator for OSQAR LSW - light shining through the wall, dark matter search experiment. In this paper the optical design and a possible locking scheme are presented. The environmental conditions in SM18 testing hall at CERN, where OSQAR experiment is based, are discussed. The main focus is put on the vibration analysis, cavity transversal modes behaviour, possible clipping in the anticryostat of LHC – Large Hadron Collider magnet bore and locking loop parameters required for future experimental testing. The expected finesse of resonator will be presented and di…

In vitro optical quality differences between multifocal apodized diffractive intraocular lenses.

2013

Purpose To compare the in vitro optical quality of multifocal apodized intraocular lenses (IOLs) at different focal points. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The Acrysof Restor +3.0 diopter (D) multifocal IOL with 2 main foci (bifocal IOL) and the Finevision multifocal IOL with 3 main foci (trifocal IOL) were evaluated. The optical quality was quantified using the modulation transfer function (MTF) at 7 focal points and for 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm apertures. The through-focus MTF at 10 focal points of the IOLs was also recorded. Results For the 0.0 D and −2.5 D focal points, the bifocal IOL showed the highest MTF values for pupil sizes as well as …
