MWP true time delay implemented in PbS-SU8 waveguides
2015
Nanotechnology in lithium niobate for integrated optic frequency conversion in the UV
2017
In the domain of Earth Explorer satellites nanoengineered nonlinear crystals can optimize UV tunable solid-state laser converters. Lightweight sources can be based on Lithium Niobate (LN) domain engineering by electric field poling and guided wave interactions. In this Communication we report the preliminary experimental results and the very first demonstration of UltraViolet second-harmonic generation by first-order quasi-phase-matching in a surface-periodically-poled proton-exchanged LN waveguide. The pump source was a Ti-Sapphire laser with a tunability range of 700- 980 nm and a 40 GHz linewidth. We have measured UV continuous-wave light at 390 nm by means of a lock-in amplifier and of …
Optical properties and structure particularities of LiNbO 3 crystals grown from a boron-doped melt
2019
A series of LiNbO3:B crystals was grown from the melt doped by boron. It is shown that LiNbO3:B crystals possess an increased resistance to optical damage. We have found changes according to Raman spectra confirming the ordering of Li+, Nb5+ cations and vacancies along the polar axis. The chemical interactions were studied in the system Li2O–B2O3–Nb2O5. Boron cations are unable to incorporate into a cation sublattice of LiNbO3, but they change the physic-chemical structure of a melt. It contributes to an increased structure and optical uniformity of LiNbO3:B.
Characterization of a new murine retinal cell line (MU-PH1) with glial, progenitor and photoreceptor characteristics
2013
Unlike fish and amphibians, mammals do not regenerate retinal neurons throughout life. However, neurogenic potential may be conserved in adult mammal retina and it is necessary to identify the factors that regulate retinal progenitor cells (RPC) proliferative capacity to scope their therapeutic potential. Müller cells can be progenitors for retinal neuronal cells and can play an essential role in the restoration of visual function after retinal injury. Some members of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family, TLR2, TLR3 and TLR4, are related to progenitor cells proliferation. Müller cells are important in retinal regeneration and stable cell lines are useful for the study of retinal stem cell bi…

CONSERVED CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS IN DEVELOPMENT
2002
This review discusses examples of conserved cellular and molecular mechansims in development, including the pathway of signal transduction between the photoreceptors R8 and R7 in Drosophila, which is compared to vulval induction in Caenorhabditis elegans. The Wg pathway in Drosophila is compared, first, to the Wnt pathway in dorsal mesoderm specification in Xenopus: second, to the same pathway in sea urchins; third, to the equivalent in the mom cascade of C. elegans; and finally, to parts of the equivalent pathway in Dictyostelium discoideum. The conserved expression of some hox genes in vertebrate limb buds and in the heads or tails of several invertebrate and vertebrate embryos is also il…
The Leber congenital amaurosis protein AIPL1 and EB proteins co-localize at the photoreceptor cilium.
2014
Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction and co-localization of novel interacting proteins with the Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) associated protein aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein-like 1 (AIPL1). Methods The CytoTrapXR yeast two-hybrid system was used to screen a bovine retinal cDNA library. A novel interaction between AIPL1 and members of the family of EB proteins was confirmed by directed yeast two-hybrid analysis and co-immunoprecipitation assays. The localization of AIPL1 and the EB proteins in cultured cells and in retinal cryosections was examined by immunofluorescence microscopy and cryo-immunogold electron microscopy. Results Yeast two-hybri…
MEMS analogous micro-patterning of thermotropic nematic liquid crystalline elastomer films using a fluorinated photoresist and a hard mask process
2017
In this work, we present a method to pattern liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) in the micrometer range without using any mechanical processing steps to prepare micron sized LCE actuators compatible with microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology. Multi-layer spin-coating processes are developed to synthesise and structure 300–3500 nm thick LCE films. A water soluble sacrificial layer, a photoalignment layer and a LCE formulation, which is polymerised and crosslinked in its liquid crystal phase, are spin-coated successively onto a substrate. A fluorinated photoresist layer is used to structure LCE films with thicknesses up to 700 nm in a photolithographic and etching process. For thicker…

On the absorbance changes in the photocycle of the photoactive yellow protein: A quantum-chemical analysis
2001
Spectral changes in the photocycle of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) are investigated by using ab initio multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory at the available structures experimentally determined. Using the dark ground-state crystal structure [Genick, U. K., Soltis, S. M., Kuhn, P., Canestrelli, I. L. & Getzoff, E. D. (1998) Nature (London) 392, 206–209], the ππ* transition to the lowest excited state is related to the typical blue-light absorption observed at 446 nm. The different nature of the second excited state ( n π*) is consistent with the alternative route detected at 395-nm excitation. The results suggest the low-temperature photoproduct PYP HL as the mo…
