Photodegradation of selected phthalates on mural painting surfaces under UV light irradiation
2014
Abstract The esters of phthalic acid are considered as hazardous pollutants due to their mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and are also classified as endocrine disruptor chemicals. Several compounds of this class of substances for decades, and probably even now, were used as softeners in water-based synthetic paintings. Surfaces and structures, such as house walls painted with phthalates based paintings, can be a concern to construction workers engaged in demolition, restore and paint removal activities if they are not protected from hazardous dust inhalation. In this paper we report the results of an investigation about phthalate ester degradation by direct UV irradiation at 254 nm. The result…
Phthalate esters (PEAs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor dust matter of Palermo (Italy) area. Extraction, GC-MS analysis
2012
Studies on indoor pollution are important since people spend more than 80% of their time indoor environments. A variety of air pollutants, associated with volatile semi-volatile and particulate matter, are generated in indoor environment from human activities. Among the hazardous pollutants polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important owing to their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Phthalates are introduced into the environment by anthropogenic sources. Phthalates with higher molecular weights are largely used as additives and plasticizers in plastic material (PVC), while those with lower molecular weights are components of solvents, adhesive, wax, ink, pharmaceutical products, et…
Phthalate esters in indoor dust matter of Palermo (Italy) area. Extraction, GC-MS analysis
2012
Indoor air is normally monitored using automatic. Consequently, the costs and difficulty in managing the monitoring of a great number of indoor environments appear immediately relevant. A practical problem in analyzing environmental contaminants is their very low concentration near or below the detectable analytical limits. In air, concentrations widely vary over time. Interpreting trace contaminants concentrations in air and predicting the threat they pose to human life under variable physical-chemical conditions are very difficult. The purpose of this work is to present a simple method to analyze phthalic esters in indoor dust, used as a passive sampler, because there is a correlation bet…

High-resolution (3He,t) reaction on the double-βdecaying nucleus136Xe
2011
A (${}^{3}\text{He},t$) charge-exchange reaction experiment on the double-beta decaying nucleus ${}^{136}$Xe has been performed at an incident energy of 420 MeV with the objective to measure the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distribution in ${}^{136}$Cs. The measurements have been carried out at the dispersion-matched WS beam line and the Grand Raiden spectrometer of the Research Center for Nuclear Physics in Osaka, where an energy resolution of 42 keV was achieved. A new gas cell with thin windows made of polyethylene naphthalate has been employed as a target. The extracted GT strength distribution is confronted with the rather long $2\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$ deca…
Establishment of a pulmonary epithelial barrier on biodegradable poly-L-lactic-acid membranes
2019
Development of biocompatible and functional scaffolds for tissue engineering is a major challenge, especially for development of polarised epithelia that are critical structures in tissue homeostasis. Different in vitro models of the lung epithelial barrier have been characterized using non-degradable polyethylene terephthalate membranes which limits their uses for tissue engineering. Although poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) membranes are biodegradable, those prepared via conventional Diffusion Induced Phase Separation (DIPS) lack open-porous geometry and show limited permeability compromising their use for epithelial barrier studies. Here we used PLLA membranes prepared via a modification of the…
Effect of adding new phosphazene compounds to poly(butylene terephthalate)/polyamide blends. I: Preliminary study in a batch mixer
2005
Abstract Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and a sample of polyamide have been melt processed in the presence of two new phosphazene compounds, namely 2,2-dichloro-4,4,6,6-bis[spiro(2′,2″dioxy-1′,1″biphenyl)]cyclotriphosphazene (2Cl-CP) and 2,2-bis-(2-methoxy-4-methyleneoxy-phenoxy)-4,4,6,6,-bis[spiro(2′,2″dioxy-1′,1″biphenyl)]cyclophosphazene (CP-2EPOX). The blends were prepared by using polyamide 6 (PA6) at 25/75 w/w and 75/25 w/w composition. In order to perform a preliminary analysis on the behaviour of the blends, the materials were prepared in a batch mixer. The materials have been completely characterized from a rheological, morphological, mechanical point of view. The results indic…

The abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere, on land, and especially in water bodies is well acknowledged. In this study, we establish an optical method based on three different techniques, namely, specular reflection to probe the medium, transmission spectroscopy measurements for the detection and identification, and a speckle pattern for monitoring the sedimentation of MPs filtrated from wastewater sludge and suspended in ethanol. We used first Raman measurements to estimate the presence and types of different MPs in wastewater sludge samples. We also used microscopy to identify the shapes of the main MPs. This allowed us to create a teaching set of samples to be characterized …
Aortic valve-sparing root replacement from inside the aorta using three Dacron skirts preserving the native Valsalva sinuses geometry and stabilizing…
2009
We present an alternative idea for valve-sparing technique combining the advantages of the reimplantation and the benefits of the remodeling techniques. We replace the sinuses of Valsalva using three Dacron skirts from inside of the aorta. The physiological anatomy of the Valsalva sinuses and their dynamic properties are preserved and the aortic commissures displacement avoided. The distal rim of each Dacron skirt was anchored to the aorto-ventricular junction using Ticron (2-0) U stitches placed from the ventricular side to the aortic side. We stabilize the base of the aortic annulus to prevent future dilation.
Influence of the arrangement of the crystals and the structure of the noncrystalline regions on the mechanical properties of polyethylene terephthala…
2007
Amorphous samples of polyethylene terephthalate were stretched with different rates and stretching ratios at different temperatures. Afterwards they were crystallized. The arrangement of the crystals and the conformations of the chains in the noncrystalline regions were investigated by means of X-ray wide-angle scattering, X-ray small-angle scattering, birefringence measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The influence of the morphological structure on the mechanical strength was determined. The stretching ratio itself generally does not characterize the orientation state. The structure obtained after crystallization depends mainly on the birefringence of the sample after …
