Molecular phylogeny, biogeographic history, and evolution of cave-dwelling taxa in the European harvestman genusIschyropsalis(Opiliones: Dyspnoi)

Abstract We estimated a multigenic molecular phylogeny and reconstructed biogeographic history for the European harvestman genus Ischyropsalis C.L. Koch 1839 (Dyspnoi). To reconstruct historical biogeographic patterns we conducted an algorithmic VIP analysis which revealed patterns consistent with a vicariance-dominated history. The existing morphology-based systematic framework for Ischyropsalis is mostly inconsistent with molecular phylogenetic results, and a new informal system is established that recognizes three main clades and several sub-clades. Toward a Phylogenetic Classification of the Lauraceae: Evidence from matK Sequences

Abstract The larger part of the matK gene and the (3′−) adjacent spacer have been sequenced and used for phylogenetic analyses in 48 species of Lauraceae from all parts of their geographical range, and in three outgroup taxa. Except for the aberrant genera Hypodaphnis and Cassytha, the genetic divergence within the family is surprisingly low. In spite of this, several clades receive sufficient support to change our current concepts of relationships within the family. Thalassobius mediterraneus gen. nov., sp. nov., and reclassification of Ruegeria gelatinovorans as Thalassobius gelatinovorus comb. nov.

A Gram-negative, slightly halophilic, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic, chemo-organotrophic bacterium was isolated from sea water off the western Mediterranean coast near Valencia (Spain). This strain was able to grow on several organic acids and amino acids added to a minimal medium as carbon sources, but used few carbohydrates or yielded slight growth when sugars were used. Phylogenetic analysis based on an almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain XSM19T was a member of the Roseobacter group within the ‘Alphaproteobacteria’, with its closest phylogenetic neighbour being Ruegeria gelatinovorans (97·6 % sequence similarity). Evolutionary relationships withinArgemone (Papaveraceae) were inferred from nucleotide variation in nuclear ribosomal DNA. A complete representation of the genus was achieved by using herbarium material to a large extent (74%). Four distinct clades can be recognized based on the molecular results. <strong>The mesothoracic wings of Afrotropical Scutelleridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera): morphology and taxonomic significance</strong>

Mesothoracic wings have been examined and compared in 32 species representing 20 genera of Afrotropical Scutelleridae. Morphological characters of the corium are described. Three main types of mesothoracic wing venation patterns can be recognized. The taxonomic significance of forewing characters in Scutelleridae is briefly discussed.

Mediterranean representatives of the galling aphid tribe Fordini (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Eriosomatinae) are usually grouped under the subtribe term Fordina. Aphids within Fordina display two-year life cycles, alternating between Pistacia shrubs, where they induce conspicuous galls, and roots of Poaceae species. The high number of morphs present in a given species, the lack of knowledge of the complete cycle in some species, and the similarity between homologous morphs observed in different species pose many taxonomic problems in this group. Molecular systematics and phytochemistry of Rehmannia (Scrophulariaceae)

Abstract The relationships between the six known species of Rehmannia were investigated. With regard to the content of iridoid glucosides, caffeoyl phenylethanoid glycosides (CPGs) and ionone glucosides, no conclusions could be drawn. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data (ITS region, trnL-F region and rps 16 intron) reveal a well-resolved topology in which Rehmannia glutinosa and Rehmannia solanifolia and Rehmannia piasezkii and Rehmannia elata are well-supported species pairs. Rehmannia chingii is sister to the rest of the genus, which is congruent with its distribution distant to the other species of the genus.
