Students’ physical activity intensity and sedentary behaviour by physical self-concept profiles : A latent profile analysis

2020

Aims of this study were to identify student clusters in physical appearance, sport competence, global physical self-concept and self-esteem, and to examine whether different physical self-concept groups differ in their moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour. Participants of the study were 211 boys and 183 girls aged 13-16 years. MVPA and sedentary behaviour were monitored by GT3X accelerometers during seven days. Participants' physical self-concept was measured by the short Physical Self-Description Questionnaire. Latent profile analyses revealed a four-cluster solution: 1) "low sport competence, moderate global physical self-concept and self-esteem, and high …

Johdanto. Tyypin 1 diabetesta sairastavilla valtimosairauksien riski on huomattavasti kohonnut verrattuna henkilöihin, joilla ei ole diabetesta. Fyysisen aktiivisuuden on osoitettu olevan yhteydessä matalampaan sydän- ja verisuonisairauksien riskiin, minkä takia fyysisen aktiivisuuden lisääminen voisi auttaa tyypin 1 diabeetikkojen sairastumisriskin hallitsemisessa. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli vertailla nilkka-olkavarsipainesuhdetta (ABI) ja valtimoiden jäykkyyttä CAVI-indeksillä mitattuna tyypin 1 diabetes…

Effects of Job Content and Physical Activity on Body Mass Index among Obese Managers of the Mexican Manufacturing Industry

2020

Mental health disorders resulting from work stressors are increasing in the Mexican manufacturing industry and worldwide. Managerial positions in these contexts are highly stressful, and although physical activity may reduce the negative effects of work stress, the relationships between these two aspects regarding their effects on the body mass index (BMI) of obese managers are scarcely studied. This article aims to study such relationships by using the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) dimensions with the Baecke’s physical activity questionnaire dimensions and analyzing their effects on the BMI. A sample of 255 managers from the Mexican industry, with a (BMI > 30) participated by answerin…

Comparison of acute and chronic exercise effects in the lipid droplets topography skeletal muscle, following high and low-fat diet in mice

2015

In the modern world, diet patterns high on lipids, sedentary lifestyle and obesity contribute all in the development of metabolic syndrome, which in turn can lead to type 2 diabetes. All the excess fats, that the majority of the population consumes nowadays, are stored as ectopic fat, particularly in the skeletal muscle, a tissue beyond doubt insulin-sensitive. Physical activity has been proposed according to various studies to be the most drastic factor, which can induce changes in skeletal muscle lipid metabolism,as well as different diet models. We hypothesized that different exercise patterns and diet-changes can alter the spatial arrangement in lipid droplets (LDs) in different skeleta…

Muscle fiber-type distribution predicts weight gain and unfavourable left ventricular geometry: a 19 year follow-up study

2006

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle consists of type-I (slow-twitch) and type-II (fast-twitch) fibers, with proportions highly variable between individuals and mostly determined by genetic factors. Cross-sectional studies have associated low percentage of type-I fibers (type-I%) with many cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: We investigated whether baseline type-I% predicts left ventricular (LV) structure and function at 19-year follow-up, and if so, which are the strongest mediating factors. At baseline in 1984 muscle fiber-type distribution (by actomyosin ATPase staining) was studied in 63 healthy men (aged 32–58 years). The follow-up in 2003 included echocardiography, measurement of obesity rel…

Effectiveness of interventions to promote physical activity in overweight adults in the health care setting : a systematic review

2017

Overweight and obese individuals are at a significant risk for developing cardiovascular disease and other health concerns. Increasing physical activity (PA) in this population is associated with weight loss and positive health outcomes. One way of promoting PA is through interventions in the health care setting. Research is needed to identify the most effective ways of motivating overweight individuals to increase their PA behaviour and to maintain these changes. This systematic review seeks to synthesise current evidence on the effectiveness of behavioural interventions aimed at increasing PA in the overweight and obese population in the health care setting. Literature searches were perfo…

Correlates of and physical activity counseling effect on attitude toward physical activity among older people

2011

Among older adults, moderate regular physical activity, even if below the level to show fitness effect, leads to multiple health benefits. However, despite well-documented benefits of physical activity, the majority of adults in developed countries do not exercise. There is a need to investigate what influences attitude toward physical activity among older people to develop suitable health promotion scheme. The purpose of this study was to identify correlates of attitude toward physical activity and effect of physical activity counseling program on attitude change among older people. The data was drawn from the screening and counseling for physical activity and mobility (SCAMOB) project con…
