The Physical Activity and Nutritional INfluences in Ageing (PANINI) Toolkit: a standardized approach towards physical activity and nutritional assess…
2022
Assessing multiple domains of health in older adults requires multidimensional and large datasets. Consensus on definitions, measurement protocols and outcome measures is a prerequisite. The Physical Activity and Nutritional INfluences In Ageing (PANINI) Toolkit aims to provide a standardized toolkit of best-practice measures for assessing health domains of older adults with an emphasis on nutrition and physical activity. The toolkit was drafted by consensus of multidisciplinary and pan-European experts on ageing to standardize research initiatives in diverse populations within the PANINI consortium. Domains within the PANINI Toolkit include socio-demographics, general health, nutrition, ph…
A Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol for Using an Accelerometer-Smartphone Application Intervention to Increase Physical Activity and Improve Healt…
2021
Physical activity is beneficial for improving health and reducing sick leave absences. This article describes a protocol for an intervention using an interactive accelerometer smartphone application, telephone counselling, and physical activity recordings to increase the physical activity of workers in the military and improve their health. Under the protocol, employees from six military brigades in Finland will be randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group’s participants will use accelerometers to measure their daily physical activities and their quality of sleep for six months. They will receive feedback based on these measurements via a smartphone applic…
Motives for competitive sports participation in masters track and field athletes : Impact of sociodemographic factors and competitive background
2022
Objectives Masters athletes due to their lifelong engagement in sport represent a unique group to study motivation for regular physical activity, but there is less scientific data on the sport motives in masters athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association of age, sex, education, nationality, competitive background and training amount with sport motives of masters track and field athletes. Methods 811 (254 women) athletes aged 35–89 years participated in European Veterans Athletics Championships in the year of 2000. Sport motives were assessed with a questionnaire and categorized into1) well-being, 2) competitive and performance 3) health and fitness motives. R…
Outdoor Mobility and Use of Adaptive or Maladaptive Walking Modifications among Older People
2020
Background. In old age, decline in functioning may cause changes in walking ability. Our aim was to study whether older people who report adaptive, maladaptive or no walking modifications differ in outdoor mobility. Methods. Community-dwelling people aged 75–90 years (N=848) were interviewed at baseline, of whom 761 participated in the 2-year follow-up. Walking modifications were assessed by asking the participants whether they had modified their way of walking 2 kilometers due to their health. Based on the responses, three categories were formed: no walking modifications (reference), adaptive (e.g., walking more slowly, using an aid) and maladaptive walking modifications (reduced frequency…
Changes in Physical Performance During 21 d of Military Field Training in Warfighters
2018
Introduction: Few studies have reported the amount of physical activity (PA) and its associations to physical performance of warfighters during military field training (MFT). The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in neuromuscular performance and PA among male Finnish Army conscripts during a 21-d MFT and to evaluate their recovery during 4 d after MFT. Methods: Body composition and physical performance were measured four times during the study (before MFT (PRE), after 12 d (MID), post training (POST) and after 4 d of recovery (RECO)). PA was measured throughout MFT in a group of healthy young male conscripts (n=49) by using a tri-axial accelerometer. The study was approved by…
Test-retest reliability of survey items on ownership and use of physical activity trackers
2019
Background: Researchers are interested in using digital tools, such as physical activity trackers (PAT), to promote and measure physical activity. PAT is a fast-growing research area that measures movement therefore, reliable questions on the ownership and use of PATs among adolescent populations need to be developed. Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct an intra-rater test-retest reliability study on PAT survey items used for surveillance purposes among young adolescents in ownership and use of smartphone applications (apps) and heart rate monitors (HRM). Methods: Young adolescents (N = 755; 11-, 13-, and 15-year-olds) in the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic were recruited t…
Habitual physical activity and heart rate variability in 12-year old children
2012
ABSTRACT Wennman, Heini 2012. Habitual physical activity and heart rate variability in 12-year old children. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, 92p. The study of heart rate variability (HRV) provides useful information about the function of the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The effects of many environmental factors on HRV are well known, but the associations between physical activity (PA) and HRV, especially in children, are less investigated. Higher HRV is related to health and many pathologic conditions are associated with reduced HRV. Exercise causes HRV to diminish, but improves HRV in long term. PA promotes many health related changes in energy met…
Lavatanssiko liikuntaa? : lavatanssi-illan fyysinen aktiivisuus ja kuormittavuus sekä niihin yhteydessä olevat tekijät
2012
Lavatanssi on kasvattanut suosiotaan viime vuosikymmeninä. Tutkimukseen osallistui 58 vapaaehtoisesti ilmoittautunutta tanssinharrastajaa. Kolmen tunnin lavatanssi-illan aikana tutkittavien keskisyke oli 116 ± 16 bpm, korkein syke 160 ± 15 bpm, ja energiankulutus miehillä 2043 ± 5…
The relationship between leisure-time physical activity and stress on workdays with special reference to heart rate variability analyses
2016
The purpose of this study was to investigate how physical activity (PA), cardio- respiratory fitness, and body composition are associated with objective heart rate variability (HRV)-based indicators of stress and recovery on workdays. Additionally, the association of subjective self-reported stress with HRV-based stress was investigated. Samples of 81 healthy men (age 26–40 years), and 16 275 Finnish employees (6863 men and 9412 women; age 18–65 years) were assessed in the cross-sectional analyses. A sample of 221 overweight psychologically distressed individuals (36 men and 185 women; age 26–60 years) was examined in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. HRV-based stress and reco…
Validity of three smartwatches in estimating energy expenditure during outdoor walking and running.
2022
Commercially wrist-worn devices often present inaccurate estimations of energy expenditure (EE), with large between-device differences. We aimed to assess the validity of the Apple Watch Series 6 (AW), Garmin FENIX 6 (GF) and Huawei Watch GT 2e (HW) in estimating EE during outdoor walking and running. Twenty young normal-weight Chinese adults concurrently wore three index devices randomly positioned at both wrists during walking at 6 km/h and running at 10 km/h for 2 km on a 400- meter track. As a criterion, EE was assessed by indirect calorimetry (COSMED K5). For walking, EE from AW and GF was significantly higher than that obtained by the K5 (p < 0.001 and 0.002, respectively), but…
