Management of metabolic adverse events of targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors in cancer patients: an Associazione Italiana Oncologia …
2020
The growing insights in the next-generation immunotherapy and the state-of-the-art advancement in targeted-agents significantly improved clinical outcome of cancer patients by pointing towards a unexplored Achilles' heel. Novel toxicity profiles have been uncovered, representing unmet medical needs. Thus, a panel of expert provide comprehensive pharmacological and clinical evidence, to provide a patient-tailored approach to metabolic adverse events associated with novel anti-cancer treatments. Prompted by the need of a multidisciplinary cooperation, a working group of Associazione Italiana Oncologia Medica (AIOM), Associazione Medici Diabetologi (AMD) and Societa Italiana Farmacologia (SIF)…
SURVEY ON THE DEMAND OF SICILIAN PHYSICIANS FOR A SPECIFIC TRAINING ON HUMAN CADAVERS AND ANIMALS
2018
Currently, surgical training of physicians in Italy has limited possibilities.Surgical training can be performed on dissection of human bodies as well as in animal laboratories, but experience is very poor. We conducted a survey through an anonymous questionnaire in order to evaluate the opinions of post-graduate physicians on their need for experience training on both human and animal bodies during their medical studies. A total of 165 young Sicilian physicians responded to the survey. Only 14 of them (8.5%) declared they had specific training on a live animal, while 46 (27.9%) reported they already attended cadaver labs. Over 70% assigned the maximum score to the utility of such courses a…
Establishing Equivalence or Non-Inferiority in Clinical Trials
2012
Background: An increasing number of clinical trials are being performed to show the absence of relevant differences between the effects of two treatments. The primary care physician makes use of the results of so-called equivalence studies, at least indirectly, practically every day. Equally important are active control clinical trials in which the efficacy of a new treatment has to be proven through demonstrating non-inferiority as compared to a standard treatment. Methods: Explanation of basic principles and statistical techniques with reference to the original literature; selective searches in the medical literature. Results: First of all, a suitable distributional parameter must be chos…
Legers erfaring med pasienttilgang til elektronisk sykehusjournal
2019
Masteroppgave helse- og sosialinformatikk HSI500 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background: In many countries, patient access to electronic health records (PAEHR), have been or are about to be introduced. Aim:This study aims to learn about doctor ́s experience with PAEHR after three years in a hospital in Norway.Selection and method:This is a qualitative study where eight doctors have been interviewed about their experience with PAEHR. The analysis has been done with the help of “technological frames” as a means to understand information technology and how people interact with it. Result:The stud…
Histologic analysis of specimens from laparoscopic endometrioma excision performed by different surgeons: does the surgeon matter?
2011

Design Multicenter, prospective trial. Setting Four tertiary care university hospitals. Patient(s) Fifty patients, aged 25 to 40 years, with monolateral ovarian endometriomas who underwent laparoscopic excision. Intervention(s) Operation with the stripping technique by surgeons with specific expertise in endometriosis surgery in four centers (groups A, B, C, and D) and by residents with average training in laparoscopic surgery (group E). Lääkärijohtajan työn status praesens
2017
Fake news and patient-family-physician interaction in critical care: concepts, beliefs and potential countermeasures
2020
Fake news has been defined as fabricated information mimicking media content in form but not in organizational process or intent. Science and medicine are deeply affected by this increasing phenomenon. Critical care represents a hot spot for fake news due to the high risk of conflictive communication, the rapid turnaround of clinical news and high prevalence of unpleasant information. Communication with patients' relatives is one of the hardest aspects. The relationship between physicians and families is pivotal to improve relatives' comfort, and reduce anxiety and pain. Fake news may undermine this relationship, posing an alternative truth between the critical care physician and relatives,…
Science and law in the time of cholera: the mystery of the biscuits in Torroja (1865)
2018
By focussing on a case of collective poisoning in 1865, four features of forensic cultures are analysed: technologies for detection, authorized voices, regulations in action and the predominant social anxieties. Local newspapers and archival documents kept in the medical academies of Barcelona and Madrid are analysed. The analysis shows the tensions between various types of proof employed in legal medicine and the ambiguities between epidemic diseases and poisoning accidents. In the first section, I review the fears caused by the cholera epidemic in 1865, which was the first explanation of the accident. The changes of popular perception are also discussed by analysing contemporary newspaper…
Elements of perceived good physician leadership and their relation to leadership theory.
2021
Purpose This research paper aims to discover the elements of good physician leadership as perceived by physicians and to find out how the findings connect to the leadership theory. Design/methodology/approach The subjects (n = 50) of this qualitative study are physicians from four hierarchical levels (residents/specialising physicians, specialists, heads of departments and chief physicians). Content analysis with a constructivist-interpretative approach by thematisation was the chosen method, and it was also analysed how major leadership theories relate to good physician leadership. Findings Physician leaders are expected to possess the professional skills of physicians, understand how the…
