Visualizing knowledge and attitude factors related to influenza vaccination of physicians

2014

To characterize groups of primary healthcare physicians according to sociodemographic data, years of professional experience and knowledge of and attitudes to influenza, and to evaluate differences between groups with respect to influenza vaccination in the 2011-2012 season. We carried out an anonymous web survey of Spanish primary healthcare physicians in 2012. Information on vaccination, and knowledge of and attitudes to influenza was collected. Multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis were used to define groups of physicians. We included 835 physicians and identified three types. Type B were physicians with low professional experience of influenza. Types A and C were physician…

General practitioners’ relationship with preventive knowledge: a qualitative study

2014

General practitioners (GPs) do not provide enough preventive care. Nonetheless, without a detailed understanding of the logical processes that underlie their practices, it remains difficult to develop effective means of improvement. Their relationship to knowledge is one of three elements that strongly structure GPs’ preventive work (together with the doctor–patient relationship and the organisation of their professional space). The objective of this article was to explore the question of GPs’ relationship to knowledge about prevention. In 2010–2011, semi-directive interviews with a diverse sample of 100 GPs practising in the Paris metropolitan area were conducted. These interviews were cod…

Effects of a ninety-minute teaching module for fourth-year medical students on a palliative care ward with student-patient encounter.

2011

The encounter of students and patients with a terminal illness plays an important role in this teaching. However, for ethical as well as practical reasons, there are limitations regarding the involvement of patients in palliative care teaching. In this study we investigate the effects of an obligatory 90-minute teaching intervention on a palliative care ward by means of quantitative and qualitative methods.Self-perceived knowledge, confidence and attitudes were elicited by means of a questionnaire which has been developed by the authors. The instrument includes statements which could be answered by means of numerical rating scales - NRS (1 = very low, 10 = very high). In addition, open-ende…

Poor patient awareness and frequent misdiagnosis of migraine: findings from a large transcontinental cohort.

2019

Background and purpose Although migraine is the second most disabling condition worldwide, there is poor awareness of it. The objective was to assess the awareness of migraine and previous diagnostic and therapeutic consultations and treatments in a large international population of migraineurs. Methods This was a multicentre study conducted in 12 headache centres in seven countries. Each centre recruited up to 100 patients referred for a first visit and diagnosed with migraine. Subjects were given a structured clinical questionnaire-based interview about the perceptions of the type of headache they suffered from, its cause, previous diagnoses, investigations and treatments. Results In all,…

[Spanish asthma patients' beliefs about health and medicines: validation of 2 questionnaires].

2008

Abstract Objective We translated 2 health beliefs questionnaires–an instrument based on the health belief model (HBM) containing 19 items in 6 domains and the Beliefs About Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ) containing 18 items divided into a general and a specific section–and then administered and validated them in a group of Spanish patients with asthma. Patients and Methods In 2 clinical visits data were collected on 126 patients with stable asthma of different levels of severity. At the first visit, the patients underwent spirometry and were asked questions about sociodemographic factors and clinical history. At the second visit, they completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Dep…

Well-being among Italian medical oncologists: An exploratory study

2013

Background: Recently, attention has been focused on physicians' stress and quality-of-life improvement. Due to their relationship with patients, oncologists in particular are overloaded physically, emotionally and psychologically. Previous studies showed that training of communication skills improves the satisfaction and well-being of physicians and patients. Aims: Our research investigates the relationship between work stress and engagement and personal well-being in physicians working in Italian hospitals. Materials and Methods: 176 physicians were included. Doctors filled out…

How do gastroenterologists follow patients with colorectal cancer after curative surgical resection? A three-year population-based study

2008

Summary Objectives To assess the contribution of gastroenterologists (GEs) to the surveillance of colorectal cancer after curative surgery. Patients and methods This registry-based study included 407 patients residing in two French administrative areas diagnosed with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer in 1998 and free of disease six months after curative surgery. All surveillance examinations performed either in the three years after surgery or until death or recurrence were collected retrospectively. Results One hundred nine patients (27%) had a regular clinical check-up with a GE at least once a year. Factors independently associated with GE follow-up were young age (P=0.004), use of adjuv…

Controlled and uncontrolled allergic asthma in routine respiratory specialist care – a clinical–epidemiological study in Germany

2011

Studies in the last decade showed high rates of poorly treated and poorly controlled asthma in the community. Extending these findings we describe the more recent situation in specialist respiratory care as the most frequent source of treatment provision using comprehensive clinical and patient assessments and exploring predictors for poor control. This is a German cross-sectional, clinical epidemiological study in a nationally representative stratified treatment prevalence sample of N = 572 outpatients diagnosed with allergic asthma (AA; females 58.2%, aged 47.5 ± 16.3 (16-81 years). Treating physicians completed standardized clinical assessments (lung function, laboratory, clinical finding…

GHPSS multicenter Italian survey: smoking prevalence, knowledge and attitudes, and tobacco cessation training among third-year medical students

2013

Aims and background Healthcare professionals have an important role to play both as advisers – influencing smoking cessation – and as role models. The aims of this study were to examine smoking prevalence, knowledge and attitudes among Italian university students attending medical schools using the Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) approach. Methods and study design A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among University students of 9 Italian medical schools (age ranging between 19 and 29 years). The GHPSS questionnaire was self-administered. A logistic regression model was used to identify possible factors associated with tobacco smoking status. Data were analyzed…
