The influence of building interactions on seismic and elastic body waves

2019

We outline some recent research advances on the control of elastic waves in thin and thick plates, that have occurred since the large scale experiment [S. Brûlé, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 133901 (2014)] that demonstrated significant interaction of surface seismic waves with holes structuring sedimentary soils at the meter scale. We further investigate the seismic wave trajectories of compressional body waves in soils structured with buildings. A significant substitution of soils by inclusions, acting as foundations, raises the question of the effective dynamic properties of these structured soils. Buildings, in the case of perfect elastic conditions for both soil and buildings, are shown to int…

A multilayer anisotropic plate model with warping functions for the study of vibrations reformulated from Woodcock's work

2013

Abstract In this paper, a suitable model for static and dynamic analysis of inhomogeneous anisotropic multilayered plates is described. This model takes into account the variations of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate by means of warping functions. Warping functions are determined by enforcing kinematic and static assumptions at the interfaces. This model leads to: a 10×10 stiffness matrix coupling to each other the membrane strains, the bending and torsion curvatures, and the x and y-derivatives of the transverse shear strains; and a classical 2×2 transverse shear stiffness matrix. This model has been proven to be very efficient, especially when high ratios be…

Investigation of thick sheet AHSS springback in combined bending under tension

2012

In this paper, we investigate the springback behavior of several advanced high-strength sheet steels (TRIP, Dual-Phase, ferrite-bainite) with thicknesses up to 4 mm. Samples were tested by means of the bending-under-tension (BUT) test. The BUT has been extensively applied, in the literature, to relatively thin (1 mm and thinner) sheet metals for automotive applications; the applicability of several guidelines from the literature was investigated in this work in the context of thick advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets and using a sample width of 12 mm. The monotonic decrease of springback as back force increased was confirmed for this category of sheet steels, and a general trend for …

Design and optimization of bonded patch repairs of laminated composite structures

2015

International audience; The present study proposes a method for design optimization of external patched repairs. The tensile behavior of notched specimens with patched repair was studied using finite element analysis and compared with experimental results. It was found that high stress concentrations along the transverse edges of circular patches and/or at the longitudinal edges of the hole leads to early damage initiation in the parent plate. The damage initiation site and its propagation depend on the patch in-plane stiffness. The optimal patch design can be characterized by a strength ratio R*. The overall design of the patch repair can be considered using a dimensionless design paramete…

Fatigue life under non-Gaussian random loading from various models

2004

Fatigue test results on the 10HNAP steel under constant amplitude and random loading with non-Gaussian probability distribution function, zero mean value and wide-band frequency spectrum have been used to compare the life time estimation of the models proposed by Bannantine, Fatemi–Socie, Socie, Wang–Brown, Morel and Łagoda–Macha. Except the Morel proposal which accumulates damage step by step with a proper ethodology, all the other models use a cycle counting method. The rainflow algorithm is used to extract cycles from random histories of damage parameters in time domain. In the last model, where a strain energy density parameter is employed, additionally spectral method is evaluated for …

An optimal dimensioning method of a green wall structure for noise pollution reduction

2021

International audience; This paper concern the optimization of a multilayered green wall structure including substrate and foliage in order to reduce as much as possible backward noise reflection and forward transmission from the wall. Each component involved in the wall structure is fully characterized experimentally to get its transfer matrix. Simulation demonstrated that foliage layer superimposed to substrate layer doesn’t affect the transmission losses but contributes greatly to the increase of return losses of the green wall structure. To achieve the best performances in terms of return and forward losses as well as frequency bandwidth, the methods of optimization are discussed inclu…

Structure and composition heterogeneity of a FeAl alloy prepared by one-step synthesis and consolidation processing and their influence on grain size…

2006

Abstract This paper aims to characterize a bulk dense FeAl (47 at.%) alloy synthesized and consolidated by one-step current-activated pressure-assisted processing of nanocrystalline elemental powders. The end-product was analyzed using a combination of scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopies (TEM), electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) as well as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Special attention was paid to verify the grain size (32–89 nm) previously determined by X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis. It has been found that this material displays equiaxed grains (0.8–4 μm in size) and contains limited structural defects like subgrains and dislocations. The EPMA r…

Thermal analysis and new insights to support decision making in retrofit and relaxation of heat exchanger networks

2011

International audience; Pinch analysis offers a rational framework for identifying energy saving targets and designing efficient heat recovery networks, especially in process industry. Several scientists have contributed to improve and automate the original pinch method over the last decades, increasing its capability to deal with a number of specific issues; the expertise of the analyst, however, remains determinant in achieving optimal results. In this paper a procedure for retrofit of existing networks is proposed, based on an integrate use of several techniques (either existing or innovative). The diagnosis of the existing network and of a "Minimum Energy Requirement" configuration emer…

Acoustic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice: Direct mapping of acoustic waveguides to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

2021

Topological physics strongly relies on prototypical lattice model with particular symmetries. We report here on a theoretical and experimental work on acoustic waveguides that is directly mapped to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chiral model. Starting from the continuous two dimensional wave equation we use a combination of monomadal approximation and the condition of equal length tube segments to arrive at the wanted discrete equations. It is shown that open or closed boundary conditions topological leads automatically to the existence of edge modes. We illustrate by graphical construction how the edge modes appear naturally owing to a quarter-wavelength condition and the conserv…
