The pianists in front of Liszt's Sonata in B minor
2015
Our research focuses a comparative analysis of the performances of Liszt's Sonata in b minor. We analysed twenty-five recordings by pianists grouped into five piano schools : Hungarian, French, Russian, American and German. We compared the deviations of the performers from the score and the differences between the individual performances, based on a selection of seven parameters that allowed us to characterise each of them. A double analysis was made: "by ear" and with the aid of acomputer. Our research has shown the importance of several complementary factors of influence : education, the period during which the pianists lived and created, the artists' temperaments and their artistic indiv…
ENTREACTO / ENTR?ACTE Un film / A Film Chopin y los Sand, amor a cuatro bandas. Aproximación a la esfera privada de Fryderyk Chopin a partir de la pe…
2021
Two centuries later, the legend Chopin-Sand continues to supply the collective imaginary with vague readings, where historical truthfulness, let alone musical truth, is often contingent on the literary. The much discussed and bellicose romance between the Polish composer and the French novelist, George Sand, tends to some reductionism and evades an obvious reality: Fryderyk Chopin meets George Sand when she was already the mother of two children. This circumstance suggests reformulating certain romantic stereotypes. Jerzy Antczak?s biographical film Pragnienie Mi?o?ci (Chopin: Desire for Love, 2002) does not overlook this detail and makes it one of its narrative axes. The relationship betwe…

Gestures and glances - the effects of familiarity and expertise on singers’ and pianists’ bodily movements in ensemble rehearsals
2009
The types, functions, sources and effects of musicians’ bodily movements have been studied in soloists’ live and recorded performances, to a lesser extent in their practice sessions and rehearsals, and in ensemble musicians’ rehearsals. The present study explored the effects of familiarity and expertise on singers’ and pianists’ bodily movements and eye contact in ensemble rehearsals. Two established singer-pianist duos rehearsed three songs in different combinations. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were undertaken. Bodily movement and eye contact were used to consolidate technical details, convey musical information and coordinate entries. Singers used gestures to reflect and support…
Hetkinen! Ei kai se vain ollut Minuuttivalssi? : pianistien nuottikuvasta tekemät nopeat päätelmät
2016
Tässä maisterintutkielmassa selvitettiin, millaisia havaintoja eksperttitason pianistit pystyvät tekemään 500 ms:n aikana nuottikuvasta. Aineiston keruuta varten suunniteltiin nuotinlukukoe, jossa koehenkilöille esitettiin yhteensä yhdeksän kolmen rivin mittaista katkelmaa kolmelta eri tyylikaudelta (barokki, klassismi ja romantiikka) peräisin olevista pianoteoksista. Jokaisen näytteen jälkeen koehenkilöt saivat kuvailla omin sanoin tekemiään havaintoja. Lisäksi he esittivät arvion kunkin teoksen edustamasta tyylikaudesta. Kokeeseen osallistui 25 eksperttitason pianistia, joista 4 henkilöä oli suorittanut musiikin ylemmän korkea-koulututkinnon, 11 alemman korkeakoulututkinnon, 8 opiskeli pa…
All Eyes on Me : Behaving as Soloist in Duo Performances Leads to Increased Body Movements and Attracts Observers’ Visual Attention
2020
Duo musicians exhibit a broad variety of bodily gestures, but it is unclear how soloists’ and accompanists’ movements differ and to what extent they attract observers’ visual attention. In Experiment 1, seven musical duos’ body movements were tracked while they performed two pieces in two different conditions. In a congruent condition, soloist and accompanist behaved according to their expected musical roles; in an incongruent condition, the soloist behaved as accompanist and vice versa. Results revealed that behaving as soloist, regardless of the condition, led to more, smoother, and faster head and shoulder movements over a larger area than behaving as accompanist. Moreover, accompanists …
Successful approaches to mental practice : A case study of four pianists
2019
Musicians often use mental practice for enhancing performance, but individuals may have different preferences and skills in their characteristic, individually successful ways of carrying out such practice. In this study, we focus on the approaches to mental practice of four pianists who, according to the ratings of a panel of expert judges, showed outstanding improvement in their performances following their mental practice of a new piece in at least one of the two conditions: silent reading of the score or reading the score while simultaneously listening to the music. The four pianists’ approaches to mental practice were studied through self-reports in post-task interviews that were compar…
Music-related motor skills in pianists - Predictors of skill acquisition in childhood and of maintenance in adulthood
2009
Background and Study Aims: Previous research on musical performance achievement has focused on the overall musical performance and on musical subskills. Two studies were conducted to identify predictors of motor skill acquisition in children pianists and of long-term development of motor skills in expert pianists in a relevant musical context. Methods: Motor skills at the piano were assessed in standardized C major scale playing. For each participant, overall temporal unevenness of note onsets was calculated as the median of the mean standard deviations of inter-onset intervals of both hands and playing directions. Study 1: Motor performance was tested in 30 piano playing children. Informat…
Mentaaliharjoittelu osana pianonsoiton ammattiopiskelijoiden harjoittelustrategioita
2012
Pianisti cembalistina : cembalotekniikka cembalonsoittoa aloittavan pianistin ongelmana
2004
Mäkinen on kartoittanut väitöstutkimuksessaan niitä soittoteknisiä ongelmia, joita cembalonsoittoa aloittava pianisti kohtaa uuden soittimen parissa. Hän haastatteli seitsemää cembalistia, jotka edustavat maan terävintä kärkeä sekä esiintyvinä taiteilijoina että cembalonsoitonopettajina This study proposes to chart, classify and describe, on the basis of interview material, the problems in playing technique that pianists encounter in learning the harpsichord. Additionally, I investigate the various views on harpsichord technique held by experts familiar with both its playing and teaching. The material consists of seven comprehensive interviews, to which I applied phenomenographical context a…
