Endometrial cancer: Robotic versus Laparoscopic treatment. Preliminary report

2015

Laparoscopic approach is today the standard treatment for benign and malignant gynecological pathologies. To traditional laparoscopic surgery in the last 10 years we can add the possibility to use a robotic platform. The adoption of this system allows undoubted advantages as the three-dimensional vision, the absence of the physiological tremor with enhanced ergonomics and possibility of using articulable tools. In this study we analyzed the results of 18 patients with endometrial cancer (Stage I) treated with robotic approach. The results were compared with a selected sample of 26 patients, with the same characteristics, treated with traditional laparoscopic approach in the same period by t…

Enhanced Endoscopy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

2011

Enhanced imaging technologies are of special importance in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Patients with long-lasting colitis face an increased cancer risk and neoplastic changes often evolve as subtle, multifocal, and flat lesions. Enhanced endoscopic imaging technologies enable better visualization of the mucosal architecture. These new available information can be used to better detect and characterize colorectal lesions. The better endoscopic judgment leads to more targeted biopsies and cancer detection can be facilitated. This new concept of “smart biopsies” is in particular important for screening purposes. Furthermore, the technique of endomicroscopy enables in vivo histol…

Differentiation between brain metastases and glioblastoma multiforme based on MRI, MRS and MRSI

2009

Brain metastases and glioblastoma multiforme are the most aggressive and common brain tumours in adults and they require a different clinical management. Anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or clinical history, cannot always clearly distinguish between them. This study describes and verifies the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in combination with MRI for differential diagnosis of glioblastomas and metastases. Feature selection methods are applied to the magnetic resonance (MR) spectra of 121 patients and relevant features are detected. Different classification methods are used to distinguish glioblastoma multiforme and…

Overview of Venous Thromboembolism

2010

Thrombosis occurs at sites of injury to the vessel wall, by inflammatory processes leading to activation of platelets, platelet adherence to the vessel wall and the formation of a fibrin network. A thrombus that goes on to occlude a blood vessel is known as a thromboembolism. Venous thromboembolism begins with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which forms in the deep veins of the leg (calf) or pelvis. In some cases, the DVT becomes detached from the vein and is transported to the right-hand side of the heart, and from there to the pulmonary arteries, giving rise to a pulmonary embolism (PE). Certain factors predispose patients toward the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including surg…

The Inhibitory Effects of Prednisone, 16-Methylen-Prednisolone, and Acth on Con-A Induced Lymphokines (Interferon-Y) as Measured by the Chemiluminesc…

1988

When lymphocytes are stimulated with mitogens or antigens they are enhanced via a cascade of lymphokines to produce interferon-y (IFN-y). IFN-y augments the H2O2 secretion of human monocytes which indirectly can be measured by chemiluminescence. We tested prednisone, 16-methylen-prednisolone and ACTH for their effect to inhibit the Con-A induced stimulation of the chemiluminescence-activity. All three hormones inhibited significantly the stimulation: prednisone up to 52.5% (concentration = 150 micrograms/ml, p = 0.000005), 16-methylen-prednisolone up to 22.5% (concentration = 2.5 micrograms/ml, p = 0.006) and ACTH up to 33% (concentration = 10 micrograms/ml, p = 0.0036).

Selective RAR agonists for acne vulgaris: A narrative review.

2019

Background Acne vulgaris is a chronic disfiguring inflammatory disease of adolescents and adults affecting up to 90% of the population around the world. The sequence of etiopathogenesis in acne is not completely understood but involves abnormalities in sebum production, follicular plugging, proliferation of propionibacterium acnes, and chronic inflammation. Aims This review aims to summarize the features of the topical selective RAR agonists in treating acne vulgaris with a special emphasis on the 4th generation topical retinoid trifarotene. Methods Studies were identified by searching electronic databases (MEDLINE and PubMed) till August 2019 and reference lists of respective articles. Onl…

Activation of mGlu3 Receptors Stimulates the Production of GDNF in Striatal Neurons

2009

Metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors have been considered potential targets for the therapy of experimental parkinsonism. One hypothetical advantage associated with the use of mGlu receptor ligands is the lack of the adverse effects typically induced by ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonists, such as sedation, ataxia, and severe learning impairment. Low doses of the mGlu2/3 metabotropic glutamate receptor agonist, LY379268 (0.25-3 mg/kg, i.p.) increased glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) mRNA and protein levels in the mouse brain, as assessed by in situ hybridization, real-time PCR, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry. This increase was prominent in the striatum, …

Mirizzi syndrome in a patient with partial gastrectomy with Billroth II anastomosis: A case report

2020

Highlights • Obstructive jaundice may be a challenge for differential diagnosis. • Mirizzi Syndrome may simulate clinical and radiological presentation of common bile duct stones. • ERCP hardly achieves cannulation of biliary duct in altered anatomy, so gastroscope may be a correct choice in these cases. • Surgical treatment is essential in Mirizzi Syndrome.
