Performances of rainfall energy harvester

2014

In this paper the performances of rainfall energy harvesting by means of piezoelectric transducers is presented. Diverse studies agree on the level of suitable generated voltage on the electrodes of a piezoelectric transducer subjected to rainfall, but a complete characterization on the supplied power is still missing. This work, in order to limit optimistic forecasts, takes into account the behavior of the transducers subjected to real and also artificial rainfall, condition that has shown promising behavior in laboratory. In order to increase the energy harvesting and also define its limits different loads have been taken into account. Only commercial transducers have been considered: a l…

Modeling of trapped charge effects in ferroelectrics: application to piezoactuators

1997

The strain response of lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric multilayer actuators have been measured up to 10 7 N/m 2 stress and the 3.10 6 V/m periodic unipolar driving voltage. An additional nonstationary strain component is detected. This effect is explained in terms of a simple solution of polarization kinetics specific for unipolar driving voltage. Preliminary experimentally assertions are given for space charge effects which manifest itself in the strain as well as charge plot after removing the mechanical load. It demonstrates that the static load free equilibrium of the actuator is not complete and the charge recently supported by the piezo voltage and then trapped forms a nonunifor…

Structures with Surface-Bonded PZT Piezoelectric Patches: a BEM Investigation into the Strain-transfer Mechanism for SHM applications

2009

In this work a three-dimensional BEM model is used for the analysis of structures with cracks and surface bonded piezoelectric PZT patches used as strain sensors. The cracked structure is modelled by the dual boundary element method, which allows for accurate and reliable crack analysis, while the piezoelectric patch is analyzed by a finite element state-space approach, that embodies both the full electro-mechanical coupling and the suitable sensor’s boundary conditions. The model is used to investigate the strain-transfer mechanism from an host elastic structure to the piezoelectric layer, taking into account the effect of the adhesive layer, as well as the mechanical interaction between t…

A smart composite-piezoelectric one-dimensional finite element model for vibration damping analysis

2015

A one-dimensional finite element method for generally layered smart beams is presented in this paper. The model implements the first-order shear deformation beam theory and is based on the preliminary analytical condensation of the electric state to the mechanical state. This allows us to establish an effective mechanical beam kinematically equivalent to the original smart beam including the effects of electro-elastic couplings. The contributions of the external electric loads are included in both the equivalent stiffness properties and the equivalent mechanical boundary conditions. Hermite shape functions, which depend on parameters representative of the staking sequence through the equiv…

An equivalent single-layer model for magnetoelectroelastic multilayered plate dynamics

2012

Abstract An equivalent single-layer model for the dynamic analysis of magnetoelectroelastic laminated plates is presented. The electric and magnetic fields are assumed to be quasi-static and the first-order shear deformation theory is used. The formulation of the model provides for a preliminary fulfillment of the electro-magnetic governing equations, which allows to determine the electric and magnetic potential as functions of the mechanical variables. Then, by using this result, the equations of motion are written leading to the problem governing equations. They involve the same terms of the elastic dynamic problem weighted by effective stiffness coefficients, which take the magneto-elect…

Creep Modeling with Time-Dependent Damping Parameters in Piezoelectric Actuators

2019

This paper develops a creep model based on the Kelvin-Voigt model with time varying damping parameters. In the piezoelectric actuators, the creep phenomenon is an important issue in precise positioning applications as well as the hysteresis property. It is well-known that the creep effect can be represented by a series connection of a number of Kelvin-Voigt elements as a viscoelastic model. In the motion for the continuous stepwise positioning, however, the creep shape is different for each response. Since the phenomenon can be captured as temporal creep relaxation, time-dependent damping parameters are introduced to improve the reproducibility of the creep for the various motion. On the ot…

Layer-Wise Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Piezoelectric Laminates

2020

In this work, a novel high-order formulation for multilayered piezoelectric plates based on the combination of variable-order interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods and general layer-wise plate theories is presented, implemented and tested. The key feature of the formulation is the possibility to tune the order of the basis functions in both the in-plane approximation and the through-the-thickness expansion of the primary variables, namely displacements and electric potential. The results obtained from the application to the considered test cases show accuracy and robustness, thus confirming the developed technique as a supplementary computational tool for the analysis and design o…

2013

Stability and marginal bone loss in implants placed using piezoelectric osteotomy versus conventional drilling: systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Background The main objective of this systematic review was to compare primary and secondary implant stability between placement with piezoelectric osteotomy and conventional drilling, comparing marginal bone losses as a secondary objective. Material and Methods An electronic search was conducted using PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Cochrane Library (Wiley) databases, besides a manual search. Results A total of 153 articles were retrieved, 39 from Pubmed, 44 from Scopus, and 70 from the Cochrane Library. After removing duplicates, 112 articles (1 from the manual search) were screened, and 9 were finally selected for qualitative and statistical analyses. Conclusions Piezoelectric surgery is a…

Quartz Crystal Microbalance for Bioanalytical Applications

2001

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was first introduced as a mass sensor in gas phase and in vacuum. Since oscillator circuits capable of exciting shear vibrations of quartz resonators under liquid load have been developed, the QCM became accepted as a new powerful technique to monitor adsorption processes at solid/liquid interfaces in chemical and biological research rendering the method an attractive low-cost alternative for bioanalytic applications. In the last decade, adsorption of biomolecules on functionalized surfaces turned out to be one of the paramount applications of piezoelectric transducers comprising the interaction of DNA and RNA with complementary strands, specific recogn…
