Multimodal device for assessment of skin malformations
2013
A variety of multi-spectral imaging devices is commercially available and used for skin diagnostics and monitoring; however, an alternative cost-efficient device can provide an advanced spectral analysis of skin. A compact multimodal device for diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions was developed and tested. A polarized LED light source illuminates the skin surface at four different wavelengths – blue (450 nm), green (545 nm), red (660 nm) and infrared (940 nm). Spectra of reflected light from the 25 mm wide skin spot are imaged by a CMOS sensor. Four spectral images are obtained for mapping of the main skin chromophores. The specific chromophore distribution differences between different skin…
Functional foods and nutraceuticals: a way to improve health, prevent disease, and delay aging. The case of cactus pear.
2007
Cactus pear fruits have recently been the object of scientific research aimed at revealing bioactive components. This short review summarizes results obtained by our group. The two characteristic betalain pigments, betanin and indicaxanthin, appear promising molecules to be considered nutraceutical compounds.
The Role of Cadherins in Ca2+-Mediated Cell Adhesion and Inherited Photoreceptor Degeneration
2002
Cadherins are Ca2+-binding, transmembrane proteins involved in cell adhesion. Recently, three cadherin molecules, cadherin-23, protocadherin-15, and cadherin-3, were found to be defective in various human diseases, many of them with photoreceptor degeneration and/or sensorineural hearing loss as major features such Usher syndrome type 1D (USH1D), USH1F, and hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy. The process, by which mutations lead to photoreceptor degeneration is still not fully understood. Data from the inner ear phenotype of USH1 mouse models suggest that loss of cell adhesion is a crucial event.
Organotin(IV) complexes with epigenetic modulator ligands: New promising candidates in cancer therapy
2022
Organotin(IV) compounds have found their place among a class of non-platinum chemotherapeutic metallo-pharmaceuticals exhibiting good antitumor activity. The cytotoxicity induced by the different kinds of organotins has been related to several mechanism. In this review we report our last decade research activity concerning the synthesis and chemical characterization of new organotin(IV) derivatives containing epigenetic modulator ligand by using, FT-IR, Mössbauer spectroscopy, 119Sn{1H} cross polarization magic angle spinning, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, UV–Vis, 1H, 13C{1H} and 119Sn{1H} NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The first aim of the biologi…
Multianalytical Approach to explain the darkening process of hematite pigment in paintings from ancient Pompeii after accelerated weathering experime…
2013
[EN] In this paper, recently excavated fresco painting fragments from the House of Marcus Lucretius (Pompeii) and not exposed to the atmosphere since the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius were subjected to a controlled SO2 atmosphere and high relative humidity. These experiments were conducted in order to simulate under accelerated conditions the possible deterioration of the hematite pigment and plaster. The mineralogical transformation of the polychromy and plaster was monitored using mainly Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive technique, but also infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). After different exposure cycles to…
Microbially-induced Fe and Mn oxides in condensed pelagic sediments (Middle -Upper Jurassic, Western Sicily)
2011
Abstract This article presents a petrographic comparison of the Rosso Ammonitico facies of Western Sicily and the original Rosso Ammonitico Veronese of Northern Italy based on a total of 27 sections. The Rosso Ammonitico has been the subject of numerous controversies that range from bathyal to shallow-water platform sedimentation. Therefore it seemed interesting to verify if the term Rosso Ammonitico has the same geologic connotation from region to region. The Middle-Upper Jurassic Rosso Ammonitico of Western Sicily is a condensed succession formed during a period of extensional synsedimentary tectonics related to the spreading of the Ionian Ocean. Slope-to-basin or pelagic carbonate deposi…
Activity of the dietary flavonoid, apigenin, against multidrug-resistant tumor cells as determined by pharmacogenomics and molecular docking
2015
Apigenin is a common dietary flavonoid with considerable cytotoxic activity in vitro and in vivo. Despite many mechanistic studies, less is known about resistance factors hampering apigenin's activity. We investigated the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters BCRP/ABCG2, P-glycoprotein/ABCB1 and its close relative ABCB5. Multidrug-resistant cells overexpressing these ABC transporters were not cross-resistant toward apigenin. Moreover, apigenin inhibited not only P-glycoprotein but also BCRP by increasing cellular uptake of doxorubicin and synergistic inhibition of cell viability in combination with doxorubicin or docetaxel in multidrug-resistant cells. To perform in silico molecular docki…
