The article presents a study of five Polish multicultural and multilingual families in Finland, and their engagement in digitally mediated family communication. Explored through an ethnographic inquiry into the in-app communication practices of Polish migrant mothers and children, the study contributes to the body of research at the intersection of new media and communication, transnational family and migration studies, and family multilingualism. The Big Meaning of Small Messages: The Use of WhatsApp in Intergenerational Family Communication

This study explores the use of WhatsApp instant messenger in extended families in two countries, Finland and Italy, that represent different family and communication cultures. Qualitative research material was collected in 2014/2015 from families consisting of three or more generations and living either in the same or different households. A directed approach to qualitative content analysis was applied in the analysis of the research data. The results of the study show that WhatsApp is considered to facilitate family interaction across generations. Tarkastelen tutkielmassani perheensisäistä viestintää WhatsApp-pikaviestipalvelun perheryhmässä. Kuvaan ryhmän viestintää ja pohdin, mitä ryhmä jäsenilleen merkitsee ja miten perheen merkitykset ryhmässä rakentuvat. Teoreettisesti lähden ajatuksesta, että perheensisäinen viestintä on arkinen käytäntö, ja että perhe muodostuu juuri arkisissa käytännöissä. Although the everyday reality of many multilingual families is permeated by technology, research on their digital and language practices has been scant. This chapter explores the process of mediatisation with an institutional and bottom-up approach to mediated family communication. For this empirical study two sets of data were collected with the messaging application WhatsApp among six Finnish families, including parents and children. When the data were analysed using grounded theory, four categories of family communication emerged: those of the practical family, the dispersed family, the entertainment-oriented family and the loving family. Group‐based instant messaging in Finnish residential elder care work : taming the technology or vice versa?

As new communication technologies become embedded in care work, there is a need to understand how they affect its temporal order. This article analyses group-based mobile instant messaging (IM) in residential elder care work in Finland. The article asks (i) how care workers use group-based messaging for work; and (ii) how they negotiate the rules for its use. Theoretically, the article draws on science and technology studies focusing on ‘taming’ and ‘unleashing’ (Pols, 2017), and temporality (Wajcman, 2008).
