Influence of preoxidation on the corrosion of steels in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic
2004
Abstract Oxidation studies of martensitic/ferritic and austenitic steels have been conducted in static lead bismuth eutectic (LBE). Samples were preoxidized in an air/H2O gas mixture prior to immersion in LBE. Preoxidation films grown on HT-9 at 800°C for 48 h had a bilayer structure, an outer Fe-rich layer, and an inner Cr-rich layer. Glancing angle x-ray diffraction data found that two distinct structures were present in this oxide: Fe1+xCr2−xO4 spinel (cubic, face-centered cubic [fcc]) and (Cr,Fe)2O3 (rhombohedral, corundum). Magnetite formation (Fe3O4) was ruled out. Immersion in LBE resulted in the growth of an Fe-rich film on top of the preoxidation layer. It was concluded that the gr…
Mice with experimental antiphospholipid syndrome display hippocampal dysfunction and a reduction of dendritic complexity in hippocampal CA1 neurones
2015
Aims The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by high titres of auto-antibodies (aPL) leading to thrombosis and consequent infarcts. However, many affected patients develop neurological symptoms in the absence of stroke. Similarly, in a mouse model of this disease (eAPS), animals consistently develop behavioural abnormalities despite lack of ischemic brain injury. Therefore, the present study was designed to identify structural alterations of hippocampal neurones underlying the neurological symptoms in eAPS. Methods Adult female Balb/C mice were subjected to either induction of eAPS by immunization with β2-Glycoprotein 1 or to a control group. After sixteen…
Sleep Apnea, Sleepiness, and Driving Risk
2019
Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with excessive daytime sleepiness in about 50% of cases, and with increased risk of driving accidents. Treatment with continuous positive airway pressure effectively decreases such risk, but compliance with continuous positive airway pressure treatment is often suboptimal. According to the European Union Directive on driving risk, retention of a driving license in patients with obstructive sleep apnea requires assessment of sleepiness and adherence to continuous positive airway pressure treatment, but there remains uncertainty on the optimal methods to assess sleepiness on a large scale.
Heart rate variability changes at 2400 m altitude predicts acute mountain sickness on further ascent at 3000-4300 m altitudes
2012
Objective: If the body fails to acclimatize at high altitude, acute mountain sickness (AMS) may result. For the early detection of AMS, changes in cardiac autonomic function measured by heart rate variability (HRV) may be more sensitive than clinical symptoms alone. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if the changes in HRV during ascent are related to AMS. Methods: We followed Lake Louise Score (LLS), arterial oxygen saturation at rest (R-SpO2) and exercise (Ex-SpO2) and HRV parameters daily in 36 different healthy climbers ascending from 2400 m to 6300 m altitudes during five different expeditions. Results: After an ascent to 2400 m, root mean square successive differences, high-fre…

Lumbar spinal fixation removal by a minimal invasive microscope-assisted technique. Case report with technical description
2020
The concept of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) has gained increasing popularity in the last decades. While MISS holds promise for faster patient recovery, and shorter hospital stays, the removal of the surgical fixation, when required, is still performed by an extensive approach often resulting in disabling pain and discomfort. We describe a novel minimal invasive microscope-assisted technique for lumbar spinal fixation removal. This technique has been successfully applied in a 35-year-old man, affected by back pain despite a previous posterior dynamic MISS L4-S1 fixation. The previous skin incisions were opened and under microscopic vision, the screws and the roads were dissected f…
The pressure-induced ringwoodite to Mg-perovskite and periclase post-spinel phase transition: a Bader’s topological analysis of the ab initio electro…
2011
In order to characterize the pressure-induced decomposition of ringwoodite (c-Mg2SiO4), the topological analysis of the electron density q(r), based upon the theory of atoms in molecules (AIM) developed by Bader in the framework of the catastrophe theory, has been performed. Calculations have been carried out by means of the ab initio CRYSTAL09 code at the HF/DFT level, using Hamiltonians based on the Becke- LYP scheme containing hybrid Hartree– Fock/density functional exchange–correlation terms. The equation of state at 0 K has been constructed for the three phases involved in the post-spinel phase transition (ringwoodite -> Mg-perovskite + periclase) occurring at the transition zone–lower…

Spatial Distribution of Ethylene Production by Individual Needles Along a Shoot ofPinus sylvestrisL.: Relationship with Peroxidase Activity
1998
Spatial distribution of ethylene production by individual current year needles and the relationship with peroxidase activity was studied along a shoot of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.). Much variation in ethylene production between and within individual seedlings was found. There was a significant difference in mean intensity of ethylene production between orthostichies within individual seedlings. The capacity of individual needles to convert 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) to ethylene did not correlate with the basal rate of ethylene production. Mean ethylene production intensity by orthostichies correlated positively with mean peroxidase activity. A positive correlation betw…
Transition from mildly-tholeiitic to calc-alkaline suite: the case of Chichontepec volcanic centre, El Salvador, Central America
1998
Abstract The Chichontepec volcano is a Plio-Pleistocene composite volcano that erupted lavas ranging from high-alumina basalts to dacites. It experienced a caldera-forming paroxysmal eruption during the early Pleistocene. Pre-caldera lavas are mildly tholeiitic and they evolved mainly by low pressure crystal fractionation, notwithstanding the fact that most mafic lavas (low-MgO high-alumina basalts) retain traces of polybaric evolution. Conversely, post-caldera lavas, which are mainly pyroxene andesites, are clearly calc-alkaline, having evolved by open-system crystal fractionation. Sr–Nd isotopic data and trace elements characteristics indicate that the same mantle source was involved in t…
