Definition of Water Meter Substitution Plans based on a Composite Indicator
2014
This paper presents a water meter substitution plan based on a composite "Replacement indicator" which was defined and compared with common substitution strategies based on meter age and on run-to-fail approaches. The methodology was applied to one of the 17 sub-networks in which the Palermo city water distribution network (Italy) is divided. The analysis was carried out considering a substitution budget limitation and the results showed that the use of "Replacement indicator" outperform the classical substitution strategies based on meter age because it takes into account some other variables that may affect meter precision and wearing. "Wymuszona mobilność - wymuszona osiadłość". O powojennych przesiedleniach i ich obecnych skutkach dla lokalnych społeczności
2016
We współczesnym dyskursie publicznym dotyczącym II wojny światowej rzadko wspomina się o masowych powojennych ruchach ludności w Europie, o przesiedleniach Polaków z Kresów Wschodnich II Rzeczypospolitej, wysiedleniach Niemców i przesiedleniach ludności ukraińskiej. Procesy „wymuszonej mobilności, jak i wymuszonej osiadłości”, stanowiące codzienność tamtych lat zaowocowały upadkiem wielu lokalnych mikroświatów, powstaniem nowych ojczyzn, nowych społeczności i nowych tożsamości. Konfrontacja odmiennych kulturowo światów „gospodarzy” i „gości”, międzygrupowe konflikty, aspiracje do „lepszego życia”, stały się między innymi źródłem „nowych mobilności”, które nadal trwają. Artykuł będzie zatem …
Storie di guerra. Sfollati, rimpatriati, profughi a Palermo (1940-1943)
2018
In the realm of wartime history, a little real analysis has been done on the implications of total war in Sicily. Indeed, World War II transformed the relationship between fascist regime and society. Moreover, there are few studies on reorganization of the connections between local institutions and fascist government. Civilians have been most involved in this process. In this article, I will mainly adopt the perspective of civilians to reconstruct how war led to these transformations. I will focus on the city of Palermo, were war front and home front blurred together in 1943. Especially, I would like to highlight the stories of returned from fascist colonies in Africa, as well as the issue …

Supercooled Water Confined in a Silica Xerogel: Temperature and Pressure Dependence of Boson Peak and of Mean Square Displacements
2013
A silica xerogel can be obtained from an alcoxide precursor (TMOS, tetramethylortosilcate) via the sol-gel method: TMOS hydrolysis and subsequent polycondensation yields a solid, disordered, porous SiO2 matrix (average pore dimensions ~20Å). Inside the pores water is trapped and the hydration level h=gr[H2O]/gr[SiO2] can be easily controlled. The presence and temperature dependence of the boson peak (BP) in xerogel confined supercooled water was studied with inelastic neutron scattering (spectrometer IN6 at ILL, Grenoble) in xerogel samples having h=0.4 and h=0.2. After careful subtraction of the contributions arising from the matrix and from quasi-elastic scattering, the BP contribution wa…

Abstract By 2030, the annual number of combined total hip and knee arthroplasty is estimated to reach 3.5 to 4 million in the US alone. In the context of a constant increase of the number of primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty, an increased risk of complication is expected. Prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) represent major cause of healthcare expenditure and morbidity. PJI still remain the most common and feared arthroplasty complication. A rapid and correct diagnosis of infection is decisive for a correct therapeutical management. In this setting, the Academic Emergency Hospital Sibiu adopted and implemented, with the beginning of September 2016, a new strategy for the di…

Observed Fitness May Affect Niche Overlap in Competing Species via Selective Social Information Use
2013
Social information transmission is important because it enables horizontal spread of behaviors, not only between conspecifics but also between individuals of different species. Because interspecific social information use is expected to take place among species with similar resource needs, it may have major consequences for the emergence of local adaptations, resource sharing, and community organization. Social information use is expected to be selective, but the conditions promoting it in an interspecific context are not well known. Here, we experimentally test whether pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) use the clutch size of great tits (Parus major) in determining the quality of the ob…

Evaluation of asset replacement strategies considering economic cycles: lessons from the machinery rental business
2015
Contains fulltext : 144492.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) In businesses with heavy capital investments, the effective management of assets is crucial, in particular in the fleet rental business where assets are the major source of revenues. One important question in this regard concerns the replacement of used assets and the purchase of new assets. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate performance effects of asset replacement strategies. In order to maximise net cash flow of a rental company for construction machinery, a range of scenarios investigating the timing and nature of policies for replacing the fleet are analysed. Simulation findings are then discussed to gene…
