Mandibular incisive canal-related prevalence, morphometric parameters, and implant placement implications : a multicenter study of 847 CBCT scans

2020

Background This study evaluated the epidemiological and morphological features of the mandibular incisive canal (MIC) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a significant sample of subjects in Brazil. Material and Methods This retrospective, multicenter study assessed 847 CBCT scans performed at four oral imaging centers. The sample comprised CBCT images acquired from dentate individuals who presented at least from tooth 35 to tooth 45 in the anterior mandible region. Data regarding patient sex and age, and MIC linear measurements (length and diameter in mm), anatomical distances (to the alveolar, buccal and lingual cortexes, inferior border of the mandible, and adjacent teeth apexes…

Evaluation of horizontal ridge augmentation using beta tricalcium phosphate and demineralized bone matrix: A comparative study

2013

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of beta tricalcium phosphate (Beta-TCP) alone compared to Beta-TCP and Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM) in regenerating localized horizontal maxillary alveolar ridge deficiencies prior to implant placement. Study Design: The study included 20 patients with horizontal maxillary ridge deficiencies limited to one or more neighbouring teeth and initial ridge width of . 5mmm. Patients were divided equally into two equal groups. Ridge augmentation was performed using Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) principals. In group I GBR was performed using Beta-TCP only, while in group II both Beta-TCP and DBM were used. Following a 6 months healing period, bone cores …

Dynamic analysis for axially moving viscoelastic panels

2012

In this study, stability and dynamic behaviour of axially moving viscoelastic panels are investigated with the help of the classical modal analysis. We use the flat panel theory combined with the Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic constitutive model, and we include the material derivative in the viscoelastic relations. Complex eigenvalues for the moving viscoelastic panel are studied with respect to the panel velocity, and the corresponding eigenfunctions are found using central finite differences. The governing equation for the transverse displacement of the panel is of fifth order in space, and thus five boundary conditions are set for the problem. The fifth condition is derived and set at the in-…

A Control Algorithm for Active/Passive Hydraulic Winches Used in Active Heave Compensation

2019

Abstract The most common active heave compensated offshore cranes have hydraulic winch systems. This paper investigates an active/passive hydraulic winch system with variable-displacement motors and variable-displacement pumps. The paper addresses the challenges when the active motors are set with a low displacement. The active motor displacement is shown to have significant impact on the dynamics of the closed loop hydraulic system. The classical control strategy for this type of system do not address these challenges and will in certain situations have significantly reduced performance. Therefor, a new control method is presented that utilize the variable displacement of the pumps and mot…

Poor-Contrast Particle Image Processing in Microscale Mixing

2010

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) often employs the cross-correlation function to identify average particle displacement in an interrogation window. The quality of correlation peak has a strong dependence on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or contrast of the particle images. In fact, variable-contrast particle images are not uncommon in the PIV community: Strong light sheet intensity variations, wall reflections, multiple scattering in densely-seeded regions and two-phase flow applications are likely sources of local contrast variations. In this paper, we choose an image pair obtained in a micro-scale mixing experiment with severe local contrast gradients. In regions where image contrast is…

Prediction of the out-of-plane response of infilled frames under seismic loads by a new fiber-section macro-model

2016

This chapter suggests that an extension of the capability of the traditional inplane macro-models to capture the simultaneous in-plane and Out-Of-Plane (OOP) response of infills. A new simplified macro-model for the assessment of both in plane and out-of-plane responses of infilled frames was developed and validated. The possibility to simulate the arching action is achieved by using distributed plasticity fiber-section elements, able to directly account for the coupling between axial load and bending moment. The arching action is explicitly introduced by the use of fiber-section beam-column elements, which can model the coupling between axial-load and bending moment. The model presented is…

Molecular-dynamics simulation of a glassy polymer melt: Incoherent scattering function

1999

We report results of molecular-dynamics simulations for a glassy polymer melt consisting of short, linear bead-spring chains. It was shown in previous work that this onset of the glassy slowing down is compatible with the predictions of the mode coupling theory. The physical process of `caging' of a monomer by its spatial neighbors leads to a distinct two step behavior in the particle mean square displacements. In this work we analyze the effects of this caging process on the Rouse description of the melt's dynamics. We show that the Rouse theory is applicable for length and time scales above the typical scales for the caging process. Futhermore, the monomer displacement is compared with si…

An equivalent single-layer approach for free vibrations analysis of smart laminated thick composite plates

2012

An equivalent single-layer model for the free vibration analysis of smart laminated plates is presented. The electric and magnetic fields are assumed to be quasi-static and third-order in-plane kinematics is employed to adequately take the shear influence into account when the plate thickness increases. The model governing equations are the plate equations of motion written in terms of mechanical primary variables and effective stiffness coefficients, which take the multifield coupling effects into account. The model shows that the surfaces magneto-electric boundary conditions enter the definitions of the laminate forces and moments resultants. Moreover, it reveals that new stiffness terms,…

Dynamics of a supercooled polymer melt above the mode-coupling critical temperature: cage versus polymer-specific effects

2000

This paper reports results of molecular dynamics simulations for a glassy polymer melt consisting of short, non-entangled chains. The temperature region studied covers the supercooled state of the melt above the mode-coupling critical temperature. The analysis focuses on the interplay of simple-liquid and polymer-specific effects. One can clearly distinguish two regimes: a regime of small and one of large monomer displacements. The first regime corresponds to motion of a monomer in its local environment. It is dominated by the cage effect and well described by the idealized mode-coupling theory. The second regime is governed by the late-β/early-α process. In this regime the connectivity of …

Thermo-Elasto-Hydrodynamic Analysis of a Crankshaft Journal Bearing

2006

This paper summarizes the essential parts of a numerical analysis activity in which the application of the Thermo-Elasto-Hydro-Dynamic (TEHD) lubrication theory to a crankshaft journal bearing is examined. The study is carried out through numerical computations performed by a commercial flexible-multibody code which simulates the lubricated contact between elastic bodies in large displacement motion. A multibody model has been created and its thermal behaviour has been validated by comparison with experimental temperatures. The validated model is used to perform two comparative analyses between the TEHD modelling and the Elasto-Hydro-Dynamic (EHD) modelling for max torque and max power cond…
