Validation of a questionnaire of attributions to the detection of coincidences in academic work

2019

The strange case of Paul Appell's last memoir on Monge's problem: "sur les déblais et remblais"

2016

International audience; We analyze a case of plagiarism that appears in a work published in 1928 by Paul Appell (1855–1930) in the collection Mémorial des sciences mathématiques. Appell's memoir entitled Le problème géométrique des déblais et remblais contains a verbatim copy of several pages from a memoir published in 1886 by Albert de Saint-Germain (1839–1914). By tracing back Appell's last years, we have found historical evidences that might cast a shadow of doubt on Appell's full responsibility by the plagiarism that appeared under his name.

Towards Efficient Teacher Assisted Assignment Marking Using Ranking Metrics

2017

This paper describes a tool with supporting methodology for efficient teacher assisted marking of open assignments based on student answer ranking metrics. It includes a methodology for how to design tasks for markability. This improves marking efficienty and reduces cognitive strain for the teacher during marking, and also allows for easily giving feedback to students on common pitfalls and misconceptions to improve both the learning outcome for the students as well as the teacher’s productivity by reducing the time needed for marking open assignments. An advantage with the method is that it is language agnostic as well as generally being agnostic to the discipline of the course being asse…

Australian TESOL Teachers’ Cultural Perceptions of Students

2017

ABSTRACTOver the last decade, research in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has increasingly focused on the relationship between culture and learning. Researchers such as Kumaravadivelu (2003) have been vocal in their opposition to the practice of cultural stereotyping. In the current study, Holliday’s (2005) model of Culturism was used as a theoretical basis. Six Australian TESOL teachers were interviewed to determine the nature and extent of the cultural stereotypes that they held, particularly as they pertained to specific learning-related behaviours. A qualitative analysis of the data revealed that teachers most often grouped students in terms of natio…

Pauline E. Hopkins's Intertextual Aesthetics in Contending Forces

2017

Pauline E. Hopkins‘s attitude towards fiction as a terrain where political and social truths could be uttered, helped her establish a new hybrid writing paradigm in Contending Forces, her historical romance. The extraordinary intertextual load of references, verbatim borrowings and changed citations, her Emersonian ―noble borrowing,‖ is in fact both an audacious maneuvering of popular literature, and a systematic and subversive redrafting of preceding canonical texts from the Anglo-American literary traditions and of contemporary historical political testimonies. Hopkins‘s palimpsestic aesthetics recreate a sense of African American literary interventions aimed at recomposing a new black ar…

Plagiarists by chance or by choice? Literature and film tell plagiarism

2019

The notion of plagiarism is so controversial and richly stratified that it fascinates scholars from many different disciplines. For the boundary between plagiarism and similar notions is rather hard to be established. Originality is threatened from any direction: consider imitation, copy, theft. Many forgers are around: some start from afar, some others simply seize the opportunity. Then fatally, the threshold between fiction and reality is trespassed: novels’ plots are about plagiarism, and also cinema easily takes that obsession over. There are plenty of stories that concern a literary theft. This set is so large that it justifies a more general question: how plagiarism can be told? This …
