Genetic Evidence of the Black Death in the Abbey of San Leonardo (Apulia Region, Italy): Tracing the Cause of Death in Two Individuals Buried with Co…

2021

The Abbey of San Leonardo in Siponto (Apulia, Southern Italy) was an important religious and medical center during the Middle Ages. It was a crossroads for pilgrims heading along the Via Francigena to the Sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo and for merchants passing through the harbor of Manfredonia. A recent excavation of Soprintendenza Archeologica della Puglia investigated a portion of the related cemetery, confirming its chronology to be between the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century. Two single graves preserved individuals accompanied by numerous coins dating back to the 14th century, hidden in clothes and in a bag tied to the waist. The human remains of the individuals were …

The structure of Yersinia pestis Caf1 polymer in free and adjuvant bound states

2010

Caf1 of the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis is a polymeric virulence factor and vaccine component, formed from monomers by a donor strand exchange (DSE) mechanism. Here, EM images of Caf1 reveal flexible polymers up to 1.5 microm long (4MDa). The bead-like structures along the polymer are 5.8 + or - 1 nm long and correspond to single Caf1 proteins. Short polymers often form circles, presumably by DSE. We also provide the first images of proteins bound to alhydrogel adjuvant. Caf1, hemocyanin and anthrax PA are all resolved clearly and Caf1 exhibits adjuvant bound stretches with long intervening loops draped from the edges.

Amulet, Cure and Ornament. Red Coral in Trapani during the Plague Epidemics of 1575 and 1624

2023

Among the numerous epidemic episodes that have affected western Sicily in modern times, sadly famous are the plague of 1575 and 1624. The latter was the most serious occurred in Trapani and the one of which the most dramatic testimonies are preserved. Trapani quickly assumed the role of the starting point of the plague epidemic that raged in Sicily until 1626. The documents of the time testify to the coexistence of popular and religious beliefs of a superstitious nature with embryonic policies to contain the contagion on a scientific basis. The most famous doctor of the time in Trapani, Pietro Parisi, as it is known also linked to Malta, among other things recommended a coral-based therapy …

Mpp23Aa/Xpp37Aa Insecticidal Proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bacillales: Bacillaceae) Are Highly Toxic to Anthonomus grandis (Coleoptera: Curcu…

2023

The beetle Anthonomus grandis Boheman, 1843, is the main cotton pest, causing enormous losses in cotton. The breeding of genetically modified plants with A. grandis resistance is seen as an important control strategy. However, the identification of molecules with high toxicity to this insect remains a challenge. The susceptibility of A. grandis larvae to proteins (Cry1Ba, Cry7Ab, and Mpp23Aa/Xpp37Aa) from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, 1915, with toxicity reported against Coleopteran, has been evaluated. The ingestion of different protein concentrations (which were incorporated into an artificial diet) by the larvae was tested in the laboratory, and mortality was evaluated after one week.…

Black fly immature stages control efficacy (Diptera: Simuliidae) by means of Bti preparations

2021

In the Valencian Autonomous Region, eastern Spain, for approximately 20 years, there has been a constant increase in populations of Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae). This observation has been evidenced mainly by the medical reports from health centers and hospitals. Due to the inconvenience and damage caused by this insect to the human being, one of the municipalities most affected by the simuliids was chosen, to verify the effectiveness of Bti preparations on immature black fly states. In this article, the results of this scientific experience are presented and its high efficiency in the control of the immature populations of this harmful arthropod is corroborated.

Women’s plots in the aftermath of the Roman plague of 1656. The “Acqua tofana” stor…

The essay aims to highlight Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia’s (1510-1580) contribution towards identifying and defining a healthy personal hygiene and dietary regime preventing the sprea…
