Estimate of the gravitational-wave background from the observed cosmological distribution of quasars
2021
We study the gravitational-wave background from the observed cosmological quasar distribution. Using the DR9Q quasar catalogue from the ninth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we create a complete, statistically consistent sample of quasars from $z=0.3$ to $5.4$. Employing the spectroscopic information from the catalogue we estimate the masses of the supermassive black holes hosted by the quasars in the sample, resulting in a log-normal distribution of mean $10^{8.32\pm0.33}M_{\odot}$. The computation of the individual gravitational-wave strains relies on specific functional forms derived from simulations of gravitational collapse and mergers of massive black hole binarie…
Three-dimensional scattering of dielectric gratings under plane-wave excitation
2003
The problem of scattering of electromagnetic plane waves by one-dimensional (1D) periodic dielectric gratings, under the most general condition of oblique incidence (3D incidence), is rigorously solved. A recently developed vectorial modal method for obtaining the modal spectrum of 1D dielectric periodic guiding media has been extended to consider 3D incidence. Polarization coupling effects are included in the analysis, just demonstrating the impossibility of the separation between the transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations traditionally employed in the two-dimensional (2D) case. A study of the scattering parameters of a multilayered dielectric periodic structure is accom…
<title>Phase conjugation properties of a-As-S-Se films</title>
2006
Light wavefront inversion (phase conjugation) in a-As-S-Se films has been studied experimentally. Phase conjugation (PC) of plane and spherical waves is carried out in a-As40S15Se45 films using degenerate four-wave-mixing (DFWM) geometry at 633 nm. In the plane wave case simultaneous PC efficiency and DE measurements have been made versus exposure time, light intensity and holographic grating period. The maximal PC efficiency was 2.3% and the minimal PC specific recording energy was 2 J/(cm2%) whereas the maximal DE was 0.9% and the minimal specific hologram recording energy was 10 J/(cm2%). The optimal grating period was 2 μm. When compared to a-Se films a-As-S-Se films exhibit lower PC ef…
Gap solitons in nonlinear electrical transmission lines
2005
We study theoretically and numerically the properties of monochromatic waves in a nonlinear electrical transmission line, whose capacitance has a periodic spatial variation.ln the continuum limit and weak amplitude limit we reduce the characteristic equations of this system to NLS equation. We find analytical solutions for the voltage envelope, which propagate with frequency in the gap induced by the capacitance periodicity. Our numerical experiments show that, when the input voltage increases, the transmissivity in the gap increases and the voltage envelope approaches the stationnary shape predicted by theory.
Polarization instability in anisotropic-cavity degenerate four-wave mixing
2000
Abstract The emission and stability properties of a plane-wave model of intracavity degenerate four-wave mixing including self- and cross-phase modulation are studied. A Kerr medium inside an anisotropic cavity in which a linearly polarized field is injected is considered. Cavity anisotropy leads to qualitative new phenomena such as a subcritical polarization instability.
Graphical representation of non-absorbing polarization devices
2000
A graphical representation of general non-absorbing polarization devices operating under normal plane-wave incidence is presented. The representation is based on a four-dimensional spherical parametrization of the Jones matrix of this kind of polarization devices. The graphical representation takes the form of a solid cylinder. The projection of the point representing the device over the base of the cylinder gives the corresponding polarization eigenvectors represented in the complex plane, while the height of the point in the cylinder is the phase of its eigenvalue. Some simple examples like wave-plates and rotators are discussed. The representation may represent a useful tool to identify …
Detection of events by means of plane wave decomposition analysis and cross-correlation technniques using a circular array of microphones
2013
[EN] This article deals with the study and analysis of room acoustics through a process of sound field decomposition sampled with microphones circular arrays. The spatial characteristics of the sound field inside a room can be meaningfully described by means of microphone array processing techniques. In this context, the set of impulse responses sampled by a microphone array can be seen as an image made of acoustic planewave footprints. Due to the circular geometry of the microphone array, these footprints have a cosine-like shape that can be fully described as a function of the direction of arrival (DOA) of the impinging plane wave.Plane-wave decomposition (PWD) technique using microphone …
Modelling leaky photonic wires: a mode solver comparison
2006
We present results from a mode solver comparison held within the framework of the European COST P11 project. The structure modelled is a high-index contrast photonic wire in silicon-oninsulator subject to substrate leakage. The methods compared are both in-house developed and commercial, and range from effective index and perturbation methods, over finite-element and finite-difference codes, beam propagation methods, to film mode matching methods and plane wave expansion methods.
Study of periodic Dielectric Frequency-Selective Surfaces under 3D plane wave incidence
2016
A periodic Dielectric Frequency-Selective Surface (DFSS) is studied under 3D plane-wave incidence, whose unit cell in the periodic direction is composed of a dielectric grating and a homogeneous dielectric layer. The structure is excited by a linearly polarized plane-wave. The procedure for computing the Brillouin diagram of the structure under 2D plane-wave incidence with TE or TM polarization was already described by the authors, and the extension to the 3D incidence case has been performed in a similar way. Following the same formalism, it has been obtained the Generalized Scattering Matrix (GSM) of one period of the infinite periodic lattice. This requires the knowledge of the modal spe…
Towards Si-based photonic circuits: Integrating photonic crystals in silicon-on-insulator platforms
2007
In the context of Si-based photonics, we report on a strategy to integrate two optical components, a 3D photonic crystal light emitter and a waveguide, in a silicon-on-insulator patterned substrate. Self-assembled colloidal photonic crystals are produced with high crystalline quality and spatial selectivity. Plane wave expansion and finite-difference time-domain have been used to find suitable configurations for positioning emitters and waveguides. The first steps toward the realisation of these configurations are presented.
