Placement of endosseous implants in patients with oral epidermolysis bullosa.

2000

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of placing endosseous implants in patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. This article reports on 4 patients subjected to follow-up. Study Design: Implants were placed in 4 cases. All patients have marked oral involvement, with devastating alterations in the soft and hard tissues in all cases. Results: A total of 15 implants (7 maxillary, 8 mandibular) were placed. All implants integrated successfully and have been restored. The average follow-up from implant placement was 2.5 years (range, 1-4). Conclusions: Our preliminary findings suggest that endosseous implants can be successfully placed and can provide support for prost…

Survival and tissue maintenance of an implant with a sloped configurated shoulder in the posterior mandible-a prospective multicenter study.

2016

Aim Clinical studies evaluating the influence of the implant design on the preservation of peri-implant keratinized mucosa are rare. The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to investigate the survival, and soft and hard tissue maintenance of an implant with a sloped shoulder configuration, when placed in the posterior mandible. Material and Methods In this study, 24 centers participated and 184 patients receiving 238 implants (OsseoSpeed™ Profile TX implants) were included. Clinical assessments of soft tissue parameters were performed before implant placement, immediately after implant placement, at prosthetic delivery and at 6, 12 and 24 months after implant placement and margina…

Clinical significance of interleukin-1 genotype in smoking patients as a predictor of peri-implantitis: A case-control study

2015

Background: Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, and so it might be useful to detect high-risk cases of peri-implantitis. It has been reported that IL-1 polymorphisms and smoking habit have a synergic effect, increasing the incidence of peri-implantitis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between IL-1 gene polymorphisms and peri-implantitis in smoking patients. Material and Methods: A case-control study was performed in 27 patients with peri-implantitis and 27 patients with healthy implants. All patients included were smokers. IL-1A-C889T, IL-1B+C3953T and IL-1RN+T2018C were identifie…

Modified fixation free plug technique using a new 3D multilamellar implant for inguinal hernia repair: a retrospective study of a single operator cas…

2013

Aim: Implant fixation, mesh shrinkage and poor quality of tissue ingrowth are unresolved issues in modern hernia repair. Many complications reported in the literature such as bleeding, nerve entrapment, hematoma, pain, discomfort, and testicular complications, are considered to be a direct results of implant fixation. This article describes the outcomes of a procedure carried out using a handcrafted implant that addresses the issues consequent to point fixation. Methods: This was a retrospective study on the short, medium and long-term results of placing a-modified, fixation free three-dimensional polypropylene implant in 61 patients who underwent inguinal hernia repair using a novel delive…

Tentacle-shaped mesh for fixation-free repair of umbilical hernias

2019

Purpose: Mesh fixation and broad overlap represent an open issue in umbilical hernia repair. A proprietary-designed implant with tentacle straps at its boundary has been developed to ensure a suture-free repair and a broader coverage of the abdominal wall. The study describes the results of umbilical hernia procedures carried out with the tentacle-shaped implant and the related surgical technique. Methods: A proprietary tentacle-shaped flat mesh having a central body with integrated radiating arms at its edge was used to repair large umbilical hernias in 62 patients. The implant was placed in preperitoneal sublay. The friction of the straps, crossing the abdominal wall thanks to a special n…

Are mucous retention cysts and pseudocysts in the maxillary sinus a risk factor for dental implants? A systematic review

2020

Background Mucous retention cysts and pseudocysts of the maxillary sinus are benign lesions present in up to 13% of adult patients. Different surgical approaches for sinus lift and dental implant placement in the presence of these lesions have been proposed. Material and Methods A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA statement recommendations to answer the PICO question: Does the aspiration or removal of mucous retention cysts/pseudocysts before or during sinus lifting and dental implant placing, affect the survival of the implants? The study was pre-registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020185528). Included articles quality was assessed using the “NIH quality assessment tool” and “T…

Inflammatory implant periapical lesion: etiology, diagnosis, and treatment--presentation of 7 cases.

2008

Purpose To investigate implant periapical lesions, and to describe their treatment. The hypothesis of this evaluation is that implant periapical lesions are disorders of the area surrounding the apex of a dental implant, and that their etiology can be multifactorial (ie, vascular impairment, vascular ischemia, overheating of bone during drilling, and implant surface contamination). The diagnosis is based on the clinical manifestations and x-ray findings. The x-ray findings usually involve a periapical radiotransparency. Materials and Methods Seven patients with implant periapical lesions (3 in the upper jaw, and 4 in the mandible) after implant placement are described. All patients reported…

Relationship between preoperative anxiety and postoperative satisfaction in dental implant surgery with intravenous conscious sedation

2008

Purpose: To study if patient preoperative anxiety is related to age and gender and to compare preoperative anxiety with postoperative patient and surgeon satisfaction in dental implant surgery under intravenous conscious sedation. Materials and Methods: Dental implants were placed in 102 patients under local anesthesia and intravenous conscious sedation. The procedures were performed with or without dental extractions, and with or without bone regeneration. Anxiety was evaluated using Corah?s Dental Anxiety Scale and levels of surgeon and patient satisfaction were evaluated on an adapted scale. Results: Low preoperative anxiety was observed in 27.8% of patients, moderate in 50%, and high in…

Pre-Prosthetic surgical alterations in maxillectomy to enhance the prosthetic prognoses as part of rehabilitation of oral cancer patient

2011

Objectives: After maxillectomy, prosthetic restoration of the resulting defect is an essential step because it signals the beginning of patient’s rehabilitation. The obturator used to restore the defect should be comfortable, restore adequate speech, deglutition, mastication, and be cosmetically acceptable, success will depend on the size and location of the defect and the quantity and integrity of the remaining structures, in addition to pre-prosthetic surgical preparation of defect site. Preoperative cooperation between the oncologist surgeon and the maxillofacial surgeon may allow obturation of a resultant defect by preservation of the premaxilla or the tuberosity on the defect side and …

Long term follow up after percutaneous closure of PFO in 357 patients with paradoxical embolism: Difference in occlusion systems and influence of atr…

2009

Abstract Background Percutaneous transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in cryptogenic stroke or TIA is an alternative to medical therapy especially in patients with atrial septal aneurysm (ASA). The differences in time to complete occlusion for various closure devices in PFO alone and PFO plus ASA are of natural interest. Methods and results Between January, 1st 1998 and November, 30th 2006 percutaneous PFO closure was performed in 357 patients with a history of ≥1 paradoxical embolism using three different devices: Amplatzer PFO-( n =199), Starflex-( n =48) and Helex Occluder ( n =110). All patients were assigned to a post-interventional protocol with contrast-enhanced transe…
