Effects of orbital occupancies on the neutrinoless beta-beta matrix element of 76Ge

2008

In this work we use the recently measured neutron occupancies in the 76Ge and 76Se nuclei as a guideline to define the neutron quasiparticle states in the 1p0f0g shell. We define the proton quasiparticles by inspecting the odd-mass nuclei adjacent to 76Ge and 76Se. We insert the resulting quasiparticles in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) calculation of the nuclear matrix element of the neutrinoless double beta (0-nu-beta-beta) decay of 76Ge. A realistic model space and effective microscopic two-nucleon interactions are used. We include the nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations and other relevant corrections at the nucleon level. It is found that the res…

Effects of orbital occupation on 0νββ nuclear matrix element

2009

We have used the recently measured neutron occupancies in the 76 Ge and 76 Se nuclei as a guideline to define the neutron quasiparticle states in the 1p0f0g shell. The adjacent odd-mass nuclei help define the corresponding proton quasiparticle states. We insert the obtained quasiparticles in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) calculation of the nuclear matrix element of the neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay of 76 Ge. It is found that the resulting value of the 0 νββ matrix element is not far from the recently reported shell-model result.

Bunching and cooling of radioactive ions with REXTRAP

2002

The properties of radioactive ion beams produced by the present on-line target ion source technology are often not suitable for direct post acceleration. For that purpose pulsed and cooled beams of higher charged ions are required. In the case of REX-ISOLDE, the post accelerator at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive beam facility, a unique system for beam preparation is used. It consists of a gas-filled cylindrical Penning trap (REXTRAP) for bunching and cooling followed by an electron beam ion source for charge state breeding. The Penning trap has been successfully operated with an efficiency of up to 40% and a total number of up to 107 ions stored. Buffer-gas sideband cooling at the ions’ cyclot…

Focusing ions by viscous drag and weak electric fields in an ion guide

1991

Abstract A new special ion guide has one or more grids at low electric potential in the space between nozzle and skimmer. Viscous drag caused by helium flow is used together with weak electric fields for focusing ions through the skimmer. A typical yield through the skimmer is 75% of that through the nozzle. The focusing device is called a “squeezer”. Most properties of the “squeezer ion guide” are similar to those of an ordinary ion guide. Because the kinetic energies are only of the order of 10 eV, however, problems caused by ion scattering are greatly reduced as compared to ordinary ion guides.

Modelling of the magnetic field structures and first measurements of heat fluxes for TEXTOR-DED operation

2004

The dynamic ergodic divertor (DED) was recently installed at the TEXTOR tokamak. One of the aims of the DED is to control and study heat and particle deposition on a plasma wall via modification of the plasma edge by external perturbation coils. Sixteen perturbation coils are mounted on the high-field side of the torus. The external magnetic perturbation creates a zone of chaotic field lines at the plasma edge by destroying several resonant surfaces. These structures have the properties of an open chaotic system while the field lines intersect the tokamak vessel. In order to study the topology of the field lines in different regimes, a set of tools called Atlas was created. Atlas uses a sym…

β-decay study of150Er,152Yb, and156Yb: Candidates for a monoenergetic neutrino beam facility

2011

The beta decays of ^{150}Er, ^{152}Yb, and ^{156}Yb nuclei are investigated using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. These nuclei can be considered possible candidates for forming the beam of a monoenergetic neutrino beam facility based on the electron capture (EC) decay of radioactive nuclei. Our measurements confirm that for the cases studied, the EC decay proceeds mainly to a single state in the daughter nucleus.

Wien filter for cooled low-energy radioactive ion beams

2002

A Wien filter for cooled radioactive ion beams has been designed at Ion Guide Isotope Separator On Line technique (IGISOL). The purpose of such device is to eliminate doubly charged ions from the mass separated singly charged ions, based on q=+2→q=+1 charge exchange process in an ion cooler. The performance of the Wien filter has been tested off-line with a discharge ion source as well as on-line with a radioactive beam. The electron capture process of cooled q=+2 ions has been investigated in a radiofrequency quadrupole ion cooler with varying partial pressures of nitrogen. Also, the superasymmetric fission production yields of 68<A<78 nuclei have been deduced.

Lifetime measurements and terminating structures in87Nb

2003

Two experiments have been performed using the Ni-58(S-32,3p) reaction at 135 MeV with Gammasphere and the Microball to study the high-spin structure of the transitional nucleus Nb-87. The first experiment using a thin target provided a considerable extension and refinement of the level scheme, as well as firm spin assignments from directional correlation of oriented nuclei. Sub-picosecond lifetimes were measured in the second backed-target experiment using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The lifetimes imply a rather modest average deformation of beta(2)similar to0.1, but with considerable variation from state to state. Strong alternations were observed in the B(M1) strengths of transi…

Magnetic Hexadecapole γ Transitions and Neutrino-Nuclear Responses in Medium-Heavy Nuclei

2016

Neutrino-nuclear responses in the form of squares of nuclear matrix elements, NMEs, are crucial for studies of neutrino-induced processes in nuclei. In this work we investigate magnetic hexadecapole (M4) NMEs in medium-heavy nuclei. The experimentally derived NMEs,MEXP(M4), deduced from observed M4γtransition half-lives are compared with the single-quasiparticle (QP) NMEs,MQP(M4), and the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM) NMEsMMQPM(M4). The experimentally derived M4 NMEs are found to be reduced by a coefficientk≈0.29with respect toMQP(M4) and byk≈0.33with respect toMMQPM(M4). The M4 NMEs are reduced a little by the quasiparticle-phonon correlations of the MQPM wave functions but…

Breakdown transient study of plasma distributions in a 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharge

2015

Plasma distribution transients associated with the breakdown of a 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharge similar to high current microwave ion sources are studied by means of an ultra-fast frame image acquisition system in visible light range. Eight different plasma distributions have been studied by photographing the 2D projections of the discharge through a transparent plasma electrode. The temporal evolution of images in Balmer-alpha and Fulcher band wavelengths have been recorded associated to atomic and molecular excitation and ionization processes. Some unexpected plasma distributions transient behaviors during breakdown are reported.
