Gain, detuning, and radiation patterns of nanoparticle optical antennas

2008

International audience; For their capability to localize and redirect electromagnetic field, metal nanoparticles have been recently viewed as efficient nanoantenna operating in the optical regime. In this article, we experimentally investigated the optical responses of coupled gold antenna pairs and measured the critical parameters defining antenna characteristics: resonant frequencies and bandwidths, detuning and gains, and radiation patterns.

Photo-thermal effects in gold nanorods/DNA complexes

2015

An ingenious combination of plasmonic nanomaterials and one of the most relevant biological systems, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is achieved by bioconjugating gold nanorods (GNRs) with DNA via electrostatic interaction between positively charged GNRs and negatively charged short DNA. The obtained system is investigated as a function of DNA concentration by means of gel electrophoresis, zeta-potential, DNA melting and morphological analysis. It turns out that the obtained bioconjugated systems present both effective electric charge and aggregate size that are particularly amenable for gene therapy and nanomedicine applications. Finally, the effect of the localized (photo-thermal heating) and…

DNA Origami-Mediated Substrate Nanopatterning of Inorganic Structures for Sensing Applications

2019

Structural DNA nanotechnology provides a viable route for building from the bottom-up using DNA as construction material. The most common DNA nanofabrication technique is called DNA origami, and it allows high-throughput synthesis of accurate and highly versatile structures with nanometer-level precision. Here, it is shown how the spatial information of DNA origami can be transferred to metallic nanostructures by combining the bottom-up DNA origami with the conventionally used top-down lithography approaches. This allows fabrication of billions of tiny nanostructures in one step onto selected substrates. The method is demonstrated using bowtie DNA origami to create metallic bowtie-shaped an…

Addressing and control of optical nanosources by integrated or fibered plasmonics

2015

Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can confine light on subwavelength dimensions. Since they are not diffraction limited, they are of great interest for addressing and controlling optical nanosources. For example, a metal nanowire defines 1D plasmonic waveguide with a great potential for either addressing or coupling quantum emitters. Therefore, SPP opens great opportunities for integrated optical applications. However, SPP suffer from ohmic losses that jeopardize the applications of plasmonic components. In this context, we study the possibilities provided by an hybrid plasmonic-photonicstructure to couple efficiently an emitter to a fiber mode. Such a structure paves the way for fibered sing…

Colloidal Self-assembled Nanosphere Arrays for Plasmon-enhanced Light Trapping in Thin Film Silicon Solar Cells

2014

To realize high-efficiency thin-film silicon solar cells it is crucial to develop light-trapping methods that can increase absorption of the near- bandgap light in the silicon material. That can be achieved using the far-field scattering properties of metal nanoparticles (MNP) sustaining surface plasmons. The MNPs should be inserted in the back of the cell, embedded in the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layer which separates the rear mirror from the silicon layers. In this way, a plasmonic back reflector (PBR) is constructed that can redirect light at angles away from the incidence direction and thereby increase its path length in the cell material. In this work, a novel technique is pr…

Self Calibrating Nano-Ruler

2012

The aim of a nanoruler is to measure distances on a length scale in the order of nanometers. This concept can be realized by two plasmonic nanoparticles (usually spheres), which are placed within a short distance to each other. Since the plasmon modes of both particles are coupled, they influence each other along the interparticle axis (i.e. longitudinal plasmon mode, resulting in a shift of the resonance wavelength compared to the single particle. Because the resulting resonance wavelength depends on the interparticle distance, the spectral investigation of such a dimer allows the determination of the interparticle distance.

Génération et détection d'électrons chauds dans des dispositifs plasmoniques

2021

Hot carrier-based devices are quite promissing for ultrafast photodetection and toset off enhanced physicochemical reactions. Controlling their generation at the nanoscale within plasmonic devices is a key for the future development of hybrid hot carriers technologies. Indeed, Surface PlasmonPolaritons (SPPs) can be exploited to confine light and enhance the number of excited hot carriers. We aim at studying the excitation and dynamics of hot carriers, enhanced by plasmonics, with two different approaches. In a first approach, we aim at controlling the delocalized generation of hot carriers by a propagative SPP. A plasmonic waveguide with a grating coupler is employed. Hot electrons are indi…

Plasmonic nanostructures for light trapping in thin-film solar cells

2019

Abstract The optical properties of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) sustained by self-assembled silver nanoparticles are of great interest for enhancing light trapping in thin film photovoltaics. First, we report on a systematic investigation of the structural and the optical properties of silver nanostructures fabricated by a solid-state dewetting process on various substrates. Our study allows to identify fabrication conditions in which circular, uniformly spaced nanoparticles are obtainable. The optimized NPs are then integrated into plasmonic back reflector (PBR) structures. Second, we demonstrate a novel procedure, involving a combination of opto-electronic spectroscopic tec…

Plasmonic Waveguides Co-Integrated with Si3N4 Waveguide Platform for Integrated Biosensors

2019

Integration of plasmonic waveguides with low-loss photonic platforms have attracted research efforts as the means to benefit from the extra-ordinary features of plasmonics while enhancing the functional portfolio of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). In this work, we review a technology platform that integrates water cladded plasmonic waveguides integrated in a low-loss Si 3 N 4 photonic platform, targeting biosensing applications. Results obtained experimentally and numerically will be presented with respect to propagation losses, interface coupling loss and accumulated phase change per unit length, showing how Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) waveguides can be effectively combined with p…
